Answers from JP Players

wut.

Hello, half of the people in my school learned german as second langage. Is that because german has a huge influence on the world ? It's call freedom, you learn the langage you want, and tbh if you are in an advance country the least I expect is you can speak 2 foreign languages.

Unless your British were only a very small percent of people speak a 2nd language (except immigrants). Luckily we are finally catching on to a 2nd language being very useful and from this school year children will begin learning French, German or Spanish from the age of about 9 (I think). Learning a second language is a very good thing, no matter what language it is.

English is a widespread language (maybe 3rd most spoken?), because so much of the world was colonised by England.

You'll find very few countries that speak English because the Americans took the language there...

That's the truth right there. We speak English because we used to be a British colony. I wouldn't say that 'so much of the world was colonised by England' since there were the Dutch as well as the Portuguese before the English and the Dutch, but yep, England has a lot of colonies back in the day. Heck, if WWII didn't end in Japanese surrender we'd be speaking Japanese now and I'll probably be partying with the JPs on their primetime.

That's why you find that the official type of English being used in many places as British English. However, due to the pervasiveness of Hollywood and MS Office spell checks, a lot more people who do not know the difference use American English in non official matters.

My basic point is JP players don't know their basic English skills from trying to communicate with English FFXI players.

I dont see how my first post still makes you believe I was talking about JP learning English for FFXI only.

cour·te·sy
1. excellence of manners or social conduct; polite behavior.
2. a courteous, respectful, or considerate act or expression.
3. indulgence, consent, or acquiescence: a “colonel” by courtesy rather than by right.
4. favor, help, or generosity: The costumes for the play were by courtesy of the local department store.

Thanks to those on the language part of the post as I was sleeping when it was made. Less work for me, and rate ups for you!

I still won't ask for permission before I /c one of them.

I've never asked for permission to /check, but I also admittedly would not check certain people. I've only had... two JP players fly off from being checked - but I also tend to /bow if they use a certain emote back at me, such as /blush (yes I've gotten this several times).

I'm sure we can all agree that the remarks regarding /check would have been a little more...terse? had Raizondetre been approached with this survey.

I won't ask permission to check. It's ridiculous, and if anyone decides to punish *me* for SE's cockups by spamming tells or checks, that's their own problem.

I will say this: I /checked someone in Whitegate yesterday, to have the person send me a /tell of "hi there, how are you?" After I noted that I was well, and admiring his gear, we struck up a conversation about Black Mage (he wasn't a Black Mage or a Dark Knight). To me, it's more in how the person being checked reacts and handles it, rather than the burden being laid on the person who actually does the checking.

Yeah, I've always found it weird when I'd get the "do you mind if I check you?" tells. I've never cared about being checked, if you want to see my awesomeness, go ahead.
