Are you holding 100M gil? The IRS will tax you for it, soon ...

Foofighter said:
All your gil is the property of SE. It is against the ToS of SE to sell gil, therefore, if you do and are caught then you will probably be facing a class action lawsuit from SE. As far as taxing you assets that you acquire in a game that states it is against there rules to sell for real money, come on people...

Yea ... cause you know ... SE givesa shit.

That's why RMT doesn't exist.

Way to grasp the subject.

There is no debate on this issue, i'll explain:

RMT does exist, as such it is/will be subject to taxation if said RMT company is opporating in the US.

The IRS will not go after anything else ever. It'd simply cost too much and would be counterproductive, in short a huge resource sync.

I don't get why so many people got so haughty about this thread but for christs sake, take a fucking pill, your money's fine if you're not buying gil :16suspect1:

Hell .. your money's fine anyway ... for now.

keep your pathetic thoughts to yourself
ktnxbai.

i don't remember my family members or friends selling virtual money to support the family

cause you know.. americans aren't generalized by the rest of the world too :shok:

everyone generalizes.. people need to get over bitching that cause it's not gonna change

Edit: Btw... if they dare to try to tax me on this game I'll quit >.>

I gotta say this is a bit harsh. I agree with Mokk on many things, and I agree here too, with the sarcasm, but it's harsh in that it's directed at someone that merely made a factual statement.

I made a very similar statement earlier on as well. But Foofighter is who is quoted. His post seemed innocent, and yours seems attacking and sarcastic. Call it one of my touchy-feely moments, but it just seems a bit uncalled for.

No offense, Mokk. You're my boy, Blue!

sarcastic, sure. I didn't mean to come off as attacking, prolly a bit leftover from the post before that. It's not my intention so my appologies.

My point with that post is there's more than enough people that throw out the "well SE owns it and RMT is illegal so they'll sue" line. The truth of it is; no they wont or they would have. It just annoys me that after so long some people still think SE honestly cares, that's all.

I agree in that I don't see them doing shite. They wrote the rules and don't need any reminding. Do they have a hand in RMT? I sure wouldn't doubt if they did.

It wouldn't make very good business sense not to. I've been saying that since the beginning of the OMFGZORZ GILSELLERS! argument.

y'know .. the good old days .. when items cost what they were suppose to :P

If you spent thousands of dollars on virtual property though, I can see that it could easily be counted as an asset for tax and other purposed...

Try taxing me IRS. Although with our current government they'd tax me themselves then extradite me to the US.

Totally, if I were the IRS I would be so all over the guy who bought the $100,000 space station in Project Entropia

True...But again, this is a real money transaction.
100k on some piece of shit?
OR
10 bucks for 1 million gil?

I have to assume the real target here is the guy that's spending 100k dollars.

I just pay my montly dues, for a "service", and everything else that goes on is part of that service.

Dunno, the current U.S. administrations policy seems to be to take some from a lot of people rather than a lot from some people. If they were to ever follow through, I would assume they would target the board audience to make it worth their while.

Take 3 dollars from 15,000 people, or 100,000 dollars from 1 person...
Who is going to give you more grief? Who's contributing to you being in a position to make such a decision? Also the ratio you picked is probably not quite right, meaning it's not $3 vs $100,000. Of course it's tough to say what it really would be, if anything the current federal income tax percentage is probably a good proxy.

The point is, the guy who has to pay $3 (or whatever it is) is not going to spend days and days figuing out how to save that money, he is not going to pay $400/hour lawyers to find a loophole in the tax code, etc etc.

I have 2 points...

1) Online gaming and/or assest ownership will decline if taxed
2) The gov't should seriously find something better to do.

If people started admitting they sold gil and declared it as income in the United States it would be documented and easy for SE to go after gilsellers. IGE and other sites that sell gil I assume are based in different countries, ie China, therefore not being subject to US taxation under current internet regulation. It is the same theory as off-shore gambling sites. If the Department of Treasury wanted to start taxation on the sale of virtual currencey in video games they would need some sort of justification to do so. That justification would be people declaring the income from these sales - which will never happen. I buy and sell comic books through ebay quite frequently and have at times generating large amounts of money on sales. I am positive that these private comic books sales generate more income to individuals then any virtual currency sales. There is currently no government "watchdog" monitoring individual sales of art, baseball cards, comicbooks, antiques etc. in this manner. There is no way in hell that there is going to be taxation of virtual currency acquired in a videogame or taxation on individual sales of characters or currency. News pieces such as linked in the original post are free advertising for games like FFXI. I have not researched this individual piece but I guarantee that the author of that article was compensated by the likes of SE or IGE or some company in that genre because media generates curiosity and curiosity generates sales and sales generates revenue. So, yes, I have grasped the concept. In fact, it is my job in real life to grasp these concepts.

OMG I so hope this will happen. I am all for less idiots in MMOs.

On the other hand, instead of "WTF <insert item here> is now <insert large gil amout here>", we would get "WTF my taxes are up to <insert value here>" threads on the Flameboard.

I don't believe that is true. I do believe that it is easy for SE to go after gil sellers right now, yet they are not doing it. I do not believe that there is currently any way for a private company to access tax filings of U.S. individuals.
