I just wrapped up my first run and it was a hell of a ride. Borderlands is without a doubt the most enjoyable game I have ever played. The entire game just blew my friggin' mind so I find the cover art quite acceptable. It's a good thing it doesn't have some sort of a versus mode matchmaking system or I'd be worthless for the rest of my life at everything but Borderlands.
I expected the game to be short but I clocked in just over 39 hours with 100% completion of the quests. I also expected a serious story so I got a surprise and a half. The entire game is a giant friggin' mesh of parodies and well done ("haha catch me if you can") rip-offs/cliches. The plot is sci-fi world hero cliche (The last boss even defines cliche) but for good comedic purposes, which will anger you to no end if you are not getting/liking the "jokes". If you can spot them, you'll have some good times. Overall I laughed, I WTFed, and I said "no the fuck they just didn't" so I got more than I expected out of this $60.
The thing that surprised me the most was upon running into the Crimson Lance. I expected these guys to be just bandits with some nice duds. I was wrong. I got fuckin' Paxton Fettle's (F.E.A.R.) Replica Army (the majority of the bad guys in F.E.A.R.). The F.E.A.R. series carries my favorite storyline of any FPS out there so this was a friggin' lovely play for F.E.A.R. fans and myself. The Crimson Lance have armor like the Replica Army (though colored cooler and snazzied up a bit) and their voices are done by the same cast in the same way, so they sound exactly the same. It's tons of things like that that add up to make it the prefect experience to me.
It's an easy GoTY winner for me, but we all know that's not likely to happen. I really hope Borderlands just opened up the door for more games of this type, even none shooter types, on the consoles.
