Can't Freaking level anymore in ffxi

That's mostly due to the fact that it can hit three shadows, so unless you have three shadows up (or unless it misses a hit), you'll still take damage from the hits the shadows didn't block. (And unless you're a NIN with a fresh 4-hit Ni in place, you'll also be out of shadows immediately afterward of course.)

As for the sea thing, there are mobs called Ghrahs there. They shapeshift between a ball form and either (or with certain NMs, all of) a spider, bird, or human form, depending on where you meet the Ghrah. When in spider mode, they can use a Sickle Slash that goes through shadows.

neat :D

It might strip shadows, but more often than not, even the melee's firespit will just ignore your shadows and do damage. If it does hit your shadows, there's a huge chance that it will overspill and still do damage to you. The chances of any mamool's firespit to be completely blocked by your shadows is very, very low.

I've never taken damage from a melee type mamool's firespit and still have shadows up without recasting. Unless you mean the multiple hits from firespit took out your remaining shadows and the last hit or two actually hit you and did damage. If that's what you meant I agree with you there. I guess I should of clarified a little bit more.

As the MMORPG gets older, and most everyone is in the upper eschelons of level, then wouldn't it make sense that there are less people available for XP at lower levels?

On that note, since I'm an MMORPG newb, what is the average lifetime for a decent MMORPG? For instance, when will FFXI be pronouced dead? Officially or unofficially?

When the servers over in Nippon-land go "off", I'd guess ;-)

All this means is that there are so many people who have DD jobs leveled and then do *not* want to level a tank job, not that all the tanks are fully leveled.

Likewise, people working on their second or third characters don't have many high-level jobs, I would think.

All right, this makes sense. But still, this game has been running on what... about 5 years now? I mean, obviously when SE eventually pulls the support plug the game will end, but do we have any speculation on when that may occur? How long do these games normally last?

I guess speculation may be difficult, since as long as there is a solid player base throwing money at them, they will keep everything hardwired, right?

No guarantee of that. There's a slight chance they could go the Ultima Online route and turn support and server control/lease over to the players. UO's been going what, ten years? and it's still got a fairly large playerbase.

However, I doubt SE would do that. If the entire cross-server population dwindled to let's say 500 people, I'd imagine the folks at Squenix would step back and say "let's evaluate what's going on here."

Effectively, when their own maintenance ends up being greater an amount than revenues generated, they'd issue their statements, send their farewell cards, and say "hope you had fun everyone, sorry the PS2 held us all back for so long".

It's hard for me to imagine this game going on for 10 years... wow. I guess it's just me, but it seems there is a lot of interest dying out.

Great quote at the end. But without the PS2, face it, you wouldn't have met some really great people.

I forget where I saw the numbers, but there are still over 1 million individual accounts across all servers. Bear in mind most of those are likely mules, but even if each character only had one mule, 500,000 players still isn't small by any stretch (it isn't Guild Wars or World of Warcraft, but meh).

Thanks, and those people should have converted their sinful ways to the PC long ago ;-)

It's not SE's problem, there's nothing they can do to fix it. The problem is the PLAYERS. People don't want to play tank jobs, just like they don't want to play healer/support; those who do have already leveled the job to 75.

I'm getting tired of people blaming the wrong source for this problem; blame the players, not the company who has absolutely no control over what jobs you level and when.

Yes because its not SE's role to create more balanced and equal job types right? 2 tanks, 2-3 supporters, 2 healers, 5 million DDs? Wut?

You don't need more than one tank or healer in any party slot. You do, however, need more than one DD. Hence, why there are more DD's than tanks/healers.

"omg! did you see that! it only hit me for 87!"

"wow, I really held hate well that fight"

"{Raise} {Please}"

Don't get me wrong, I love tanking, but it's far from a sexy job.

Then you're not getting firespitted that often or you're insanely lucky. Over 75% of the mamool you cannon on are melee types, and maybe 25%(at the very most) of their firespits ever hit my shadows. Maybe the mage types have a better chance of hitting through shadows, but the melees can easily do it themselves. I have taken full damage from a melee's firespit without it touching my shadows before. I haven't merited in about a month, so unless they ninja-changed it within that time; the melee's firespit can still go through shadows.

Yes, that would be the case, except for when I take full damage through a fresh utsusemi. I've taken partial damage and lost 1-2 shadows, but still had one remaining. It's a random effect whether it's going to hit your shadows or not and the odds are hugely in favor of not.

I wouldn't say that it was luck and I have done alot of tanking on Mamools. I'm usually first voke whether I'm on WAR or NIN. And this has not been changed recently because I haven't merited in about a month or two as well. This has been the same since I can remember. But like I said before I have never had a Melee mamool use Firespit and do damage before it stripped all my shadows. And I have never had shadows absorb a Firespit from a mage type.

Last I checked Utsusemi was 100% in what it did. If a -ga went off Utsusemi would be stripped 100% of the time. If a move like Sickle Slash from spiders in sea went off, 100% of the time it went through shadows ignoring them altogether. If you were attacked through melee assuming you didn't evade Utsusemi absorbed the damage 100% of the time. Utsusemi does not work like Blink. It either absorb or it doesn't, there is no "chance" that it might absorb.

He's right and it's always been this way. The mage type FireSpit works like a magical attack and completely ignores shadows. The melee type FireSpit works exactly like a WS like when they use Rushing Drub or Vorpal Blade. If you have 4 shadows you won't take any damage but it will wipe all 4. If you have 3 or less then the extra "hits" will bleed over into damage the same as Drub and Vorpal.

i have main tanked on samurai in the last 4 parties that i have been in and its not too bad. perhaps samurai dual tanking is the wave of the future.

Meripo, x4 sams whm, rdm

The rdm was pulling and sleeping birds for us in Nyzul, the whm was doing his job but we made
it so boring for him with all the seigan/third eyes (and shadows sam/nin) Got too many links
and I damn near solo'd a VT bird sam/nin got the final hit in before the other sams were able
to kill their bird and engage mine; minimal damage on me as well.
That was a special case. I'm not sure sam will make a good MAIN tank but we sure as hell
can stand our ground when we do pull hate.

i should flame you for that ya lazy bumm!!!!!!!!!
