So why are gays allowed to push their agenda 24/7 and she has to shut up and go home? Isn't she as entitled to her opinion on the issue as you are?

Interesting thing is.. I don't see a gay spokesperson all over preaching the right to marry. It happens, there are protests every now and then, news articles when a new 'gasp' insult is lashed.

Really though, when a gay activist is pushing their agenda, do they not come better prepared.. you know, to help educate on their cause? I mean, I could simply walk into a church and ask the priest if it's cool my lesbo cousin wants to wed and hear the same thing.

I think in the few posts I've managed to add on this topic I've covered more ground than she has in all her numerous interviews, and I haven't really become fully interested in this specific thread. Not that that makes my opinion any more valued, but at least I have more to say about it.

EDIT* Everyone has a right to their opinion, and they have the right to share it. But how many different ways can you say "I don't think it's right because it goes against my religion" without any merit before people tell you to shut the fuck up?

Right, because Perez got zero backlash about the whole situation.

No one is saying she isn't entitled to her opinion. She is more than welcome to her feelings about same-sex marriage. Hell, she's more than welcome to think that homosexuality is a blight on the community and they're all going to burn for the rest of eternity.

I don't think anyone is seriously arguing she needs to shut up and go home. Everyone has pretty much gone out of their way to point out she has the right to say what she wants. She's been enjoying that right since the day she lost the pageant, as a matter of fact. That she's becoming a spokesman to protect The Sanctity of Marriage™ from the homosexual hordes is proof positive that she's enjoying her right to freedom of speech.

She's entitled to her opinion. It doesn't mean she can't be challenged.

Because I don't think you get it... You keep wanting to have a "rational" discussion, complete with research, on an irrational stance. When you say to a religious person, "blah blah blah gay marriage is great because x, y, and z" you might as well say, "blah blah blah stealing is great because x, y, and z". They're both sins not up for debate. Hell most of them think they can cure your gayness.

Considering they've been preaching bible teachings for about 2000 years now, I wouldn't count on them shutting the fuck up anytime soon.

She doesn't seem to do it for most participating in this discussion. I'm not going to speak for everyone else, but that's pretty much what I'm picking up from all this. So who's to deny OUR opinions? Rational, irrational.. who gives a shit. We're talking about why some blonde wanna be model is a stupid bitch. I watched some interviews she partook in, and guess what, she seems like an idiot a lot of times.

When you keep saying she's ignorant about gay marriage because she didn't research it. What the hell is there for her to research? That's something I don't know a rational person would do. All the research she will ever need has already been done thousands of years ago and has been complied in a handy little book with a cross on it called the bible.

Actually I didn't specify what I thought she should have background knowledge on. Thank you for assuming what I meant.

What I DO think she should have more knowledge on, at least to the point where she can have a legible healthy debate over is the stance Christians have on marriage being between only a man and woman and why it is gays shouldn't marry. Not to regurgitate the same lame argument over and over without substance. The are god knows how many versions of the Bible, which one in particular is she more drawn to? Which one does she pull her belief structure from regarding specifically this topic? This is the kind of information that would give more weight to her side of the 'argument'. People are more likely to listen when you know what you're talking about, when you have a bit more information to provide, to help open their eyes if you will.


To add;
I have been approached on the streets several times throughout my life by 'believers', of many faiths, you know what they all had in common? They had an answer for every query. They had tons of information right out of their little hand book they knew off the top of their heads, that shows me they knew what they were talking about. Regardless of my stance on what they were preaching, I could never deny they didn't know what they were talking about.

Most beauty pageant participants have been trained for many, many years of their lives in order to be the best that they can be at looking pretty and being comfortable in front of other people. Think of how the little girls are in the movie "Little Miss Sunshine." These ladies are standing up in front of people from others to judge their looks, poise, and speech skills. Most of the time their coaches prepare some current event possibilities for them. I think it's sad that no one even thought to tell her that she might be asked about this current event especially since it's a hot topic in California. Should she have lied? No. Could she have worded it better? Yes. No one is perfect and maybe she got nervous but she definitely doesn't deserve the crown if she can't hold her composure while answering a current events question.

Remember Miss Teen SC 2007 Caitlin Upton? Everyone laughed at her because of her botched answer. I can see being surprised about a question pertaining to why 1/5th of the US population couldn't point out the US on a map but not gay marriage which is a very popular current event. Either way they both messed up their replies and didn't get the crown. Both will be remembered because of it. It just happens that Miss California's question was about a highly touchy subject.
 
I think Morcheeba is right. She was asked about Civil Unions in one of the video interviews in my OP and she either didn't know what they were or wasn't sure what NOM would want her to say in response. If you want to be a spokesperson for a cause, you better know your shit. And the thing is, the interviewer was asking for HER OWN PERSONAL OPINION on civil unions - where did all that "honesty" and "bravery" go? Doesn't she have an opinion now?

I ask again: is it wrong to be intolerant of other people's intolerance? Racist people annoy the hell out of me, and so do homophobes.

What we're talking about here though is making personal beliefs into law. I am not pushing to pass legislation which will outlaw say... christian traditions and custom because I do not agree with them. Why would I want to? I don't give a damn what people do in their own private lives. Compare that to someone pushing for legislation against homosexuals (which has absolutely no effect on them whatsoever!) because they simply don't agree with their lifestyle! See the difference? It's not that subtle.

What does age have to do with plastic surgery? Kids that are 10 in pageants have had their noses and cheekbones done before, it's a horrible industry.

And the fact that she is 21 shocked me, she looks quite a bit older than I do and I'm 29.

She may lose her "First Runner Up" tag as well. She is not supposed to be doing interviews that aren't "Okay'd" by the crown.
 
I just want to say that I think it is stupid that people are arguing over opinions. It's one of those arguments that people will never see eye to eye on. Can't people just agree to disagree? If you don't like someone's opinion, then that's your problem. If we all had the same opinion, it'd be a very bland world. Because the world don't move to the beat of just one drum. What might be right for you, may not be right for some.

How can anyone be mad at someone for expressing what they believe?

It was Perez Hilton getting asshurt by the fact that someone didn't give the bull shit staple liberal answers that come from the Miss USA, Miss America, Miss Galaxy, whatever wins. He can't stand when people disagree with him because he is an attention whore, and thinks his way is the only right way. It's why he called her a bitch, rescinded that statement, rescinded his apology to call her a c**t. He started this. The NOM probably would not have been so vigorously pursuing Miss California to speak for them had it not been for Perez Hilton. Why? He stance was poorly worded if it was ignorance, or from pressure of the pageant.

There wouldn't be a situation here if it weren't for him. You can not blame Prejean for this. She has every right to make a counter statement. Does it necessarily have to be in public? No, but she's now being paid to say it in public. Is she ignorant? Is she really at the center of it? No because her belief should not influence any one in their decision making when it comes to issues. If that truly does influence someone then they're more ignorant than her.
