Right this is a pretty stupid question but Justin was just talking to me about how he has like one ceiling light in his entire house. Now I'm like wtf? I'm going to speak for the majority of England here but I have NEVER been in a house that doesn't have a light on the ceiling in every room even walkways between rooms. I've asked several of my friends in different parts of England and they've all come back with the same "wtf random question but no I haven't either" response.

He went on to say he mostly uses lamps to light up rooms and we have lamps too but I know my family mostly use them to make rooms go dim for Movies or the such.

By ceiling lights I means lights that are attached to the ceiling in some way be it spot lights etc.

I just kinda want to know if it's just like a cultural difference of something? Yay for making possibly the most pointless question on the site?

Just to throw my opinion out there, I've been in many places (houses and apartments) without ceiling lights in EVERY room. I've been in some with them in certain places but the rooms don't all have them. An example is my Aunt (North Carolina). She has a house with 7 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, and only a ceiling light in the living room and the dining room.

Also, I have more than just one <_<. Just none in the bedrooms and living room.

I have one in my bedroom and two in the kitchen/hallway (it's an old 20's summer cabin that was converted into a house so the floor plan is a bit wonky) but the bedroom, bathroom, and master bedroom are all lacking ceiling lights. I remember our old house had a similar set up: overhead lights in the kitchen and dining areas, hallway, and one of the bedrooms. Granted the living room also had this gigantic skylight, so adding an overhead light would just clutter things up.

The funny thing is I almost never use the ceiling light in my room because it's on the ceiling. It makes everything wash out, and I like my colors too much.

I think it's not so much a cultural thing as a time frame marker for when the house was made, and who made it.

Well the house I live in now is kinda old but not too old to not have lights put on the ceiling but the house I used to live in was way older and was built way before ceiling lights probably became invented lol.

I kinda want Bigbroon or Gerry to reply to see if they know any house in England that doesn't have a ceiling light in every room. I've asked pretty much everyone (this isn't helping me not look pathetic right) I know which even includes people on the over side of the country.

This house was built with ceiling lights in ever room except the living room.
At some point in time I knocked out the ceiling light in my room and started using a lamp instead.

I agree. For example, my house has one light on the ceiling in the kitchen, but it isn't subtle. One can see the wire coming from a cabinet where the electrical runs to the middle of the ceiling where the light is. It’s ugly but necessary I guess, since we have a flat roof and no attic to run conduit through. So, my house is ALL ABOUT lamps...lol. BTW, it was built in the 1950s and flat roofs were a popular architectural feature in post-WWII California.

The kitchen, laundry room, bottom floor hallway, foyer, and all bathrooms have ceiling lights in my house.

The only room that doesn't have a ceiling light is the living room because it has a cathedral ceiling.

I have ceiling lights in every room in my apartment.
Most of the light in my living room comes from standing lamps however.

Honestly there was a period of time where lamps were a hell of a lot more popular... like the 70's. Yea, there were periods of time where houses where built/designed with that in mind.

But yeah, JP that would drive me crazy. I hate not having a lot of light in the house/apt. If I can't have a lot of natural light then I want a lot of false light. Lamps can get expensive... =(

Having recently moved, I can attest to this.
Buying lamps for my place cost me a fortune, but as I am living in a house that was built in the late 1800's I felt I had to.
But looking at it, it was worth every Euro I spent on it.

My parents house was built in 1840 and the ceiling lights that exist in it now, were added in at a much later date. In fact, 4 of the rooms in the house (family room, dining room, and 2 of the 3 bedrooms) don't have any ceiling lights to this day. Reason being is that since its an old log cabin style home, its too difficult to put in the necessary electrical wiring etc.

Every room in my house has ceiling lights, and I moved into my basement last summer and sadly it has florecent lighting which gives me really bad headaches. It seems kind of weird to think of lamps being everywhere

At home... I have ceiling lights in all the rooms....

In the dorm rooms of my dormitory has no ceiling lights.... most lights are either wall attachments and desk lights.
But the common rooms, lounge, game room and laundry room all still have ceiling lights.

Yeah my house didnt hav eceiling lights in it either was cause of the time period it was built in they didnt even have lights. They used lanterns lol. We put them in tho, couldnt stand the darkness.
