{/check}{No Thanks.}{Leave}

They consider it inappropriate to check someone without asking. It a culture difference and that is why they do not put filters on. They consider it a evasion of privacy. They did the same thing on everquest. The reason it seem that most these people are racist is because most of them are, because they think outsides are pigs and have no manors, because of reasons like these.

There are 5.4 billion people in this world that aren't Japanese. They can stand to learn a little bit about others' cultures. I'm not saying emulate, but they've been playing this game now for how many years with countries halfway across the world? I'm not saying they have to like it, but they can certainly learn to accept it.

Secondly it just so happens that JPN do it more because idiots like you check them 40-50 times in a row

Its not because of racism... And you cant say that i dont know.

I don't know about that one. There have been plenty of people that I've checked, both JP and EN, and I found plenty of great armor ideas/upgrades from them. From my personal experience, only the JP seem to have a problem with it. As Sneaky said, he never outwardly stated to the examiners to stop.

And I'm sure a lot of QCDN members have checked JP a couple times and been spam-checked (10+ times) back. If it's so rude in their culture, why are they doing it right back?

I agree with both of these. Normally people check you because they want to know what gear you are wearing so they can improve themselves(others wondering why they choose there gear), and so people should feel it to be a complement that they are being checked. However there are people that take this game to seriously and don't follow the same philosophy as myrrh.

myrrh said:
One thing people forget is that there is no race, religion, or cultures on this game. Everyone is everyone. If you push shit like this in a video game it means you're an idiot.

The only thing that should matter is having fun. people who freak out over little things shouldn't be playing. That includes yelling at someone across the world for not knowing your cultures.

The only thing that should be hated are Elvaans. No one fucking likes their ugly interspecies erotica loving asses.
personally I think she stated it very nicely.

Japanese members of my limbus LS used to check me all the time when I still played. We were friends, so that's probably why it wasn't an issue. But it never bothered me to be checked, and it never bothered them when I returned the favor.

What would crack me up is to see a GM pop up and /say {/check}{No Thanks.}{Leave} after he gets spam checked by all those nearby.

I got checked virtually every ten minutes in the XP party I was in last night. Did get kindof annoying after a while. ^^;

Oddly enough, I XPed with Serio just the other day, believe on his SAM. He was actually pretty nice to me for some reason. =/

Vagina Factor 4tw. And no I don't mean that in a derrogatory way. They say the most powerful muscle is the human heart. BS, it's the vagina.

So what would this dude do then if one day, 20-30 of us came by him, and all /check him at the same time. It'd be a pain in the ass to send 20+ /ts to those people and switch gear over and over.

Now he can always take off his gear completely too if he's too worried that maybe he's gimped and doesn't want people to judge what he's wearing. I had this same problem with a blm in my pty once too in Garliage Citadel. They were JP, and everytime we examined them, they switched gears and we kept checking them until they were wearing nothing.

The blm wasn't doing anything in the pty though, so we were wondering what was up with them.

I don't ask anyone for permission to /check them. If I'm curious about their gear (which I rarely am), I'll look just because I have the option. It's their hangup, not mine. As we so often say, they can filter it out if they don't like it.

This has precisely been my view on the subject, since my Everquest days.

I'd also have to say that anyone who tries to brush this off as "Oh, that's just the Japanese" is missing part of the picture. Really, I find it interesting that this whole argument (this whole OLD argument) is being framed as a cultural issue, when the same damn hangup existed in the same damn 3% of the player base in any MMORPG I've ever played.

FFXI's mixed community is unique, so the cultural tensions may intensify the problem ... but my first introduction to the "z0mgz j00 luked at my pantz!" hysteria was with other Americans, in the bowels of EQ's Freeport.

These are the facts, as I see them:

1) "Check" is a feature of the game, meant to be accessible by anyone.

2) You do not need to grant permission for someone to use "check" on you, as you would for Warp/Teleport/Tractor spells.

3) Unlike almost ANY other hotly contested issue of player etiquette, there is no possible way to bring down GM intervention over being "checked." You can make the case to a GM about cure-bombing (before blockade), mob-hogging, harassing behavior, whatever ... not so with /check. Everyone can plainly see why claim-stealing is assery, and may warrant GM intervention ... the whole issue with "dun examinez equipz," however, is cryptic, and understood only by those who actual make noise over it.

4) The entire, strange idea that one should "ask" for permission to check is something constructed entirely by a SLIM MINORITY of the playerbase, intended to apply to EVERYONE ELSE.

5) You have at least as much right to get upset with someone for being an ass about having their "private" cluster of pixels looked over, as they do getting upset at you for having the gall to cast a sideways glance at said cluster of pixels.

Now, for opinion (reposted from another, similar thread):

The only thing "annoying" about this whole "dun checkz m3" non-controversy is the one dipshit in a thousand that actually tries to pretend it matters to him/her.

"dat so rood!!!"

"What? What's so rude?"

"u uzed a legitimate in-game feature that I arbitrarily decided u should have to ask permission to use!!!"

"..."

"GM!!!"

For the Japanese, the attitude may indeed have some cultural influeces ... I don't think so, though. There weren't any Signet Staffs or Scorpion Harnesses in ancient Japan, my friends. It may be more prevalent in the Japanese community, but it didn't START there.

With a native English speaker, it's genuine arrogant uptightedness.

I like the way World of Warcraft handled it -- there's no message available at all, on or off. You have utterly free reign when it comes to seeing what someone is wearing, and they'll never have a clue. It stops the prissy attitude before it starts.

He tried to paint the Japanese as Nazi's, your trying to paint them as the Angels.

because

I am Japanese.

Anyway I didn't think that Jyakotsu was trying to paint the JPs as angels (though I don't see any reason why he shouldn't!!)

There will always be people who like to /check
There will always be people who do not like to be /checked
There will always be people who do not like to be /checked AND wants to know if someone /checks them. It's a compulsive thing.
There will always be people who discusses this issue on the forums till time immemorial.

I used to get nutty when people /check me. I have since come to terms with the fact that my gear is so bad it doesn't matter whether people /check me or not... just don't do it 20 times in a party.

First off, you obviously misread it. I set an example... Same principle on why NA members dont let people check them.

Secondly you fucking racist asshole, I am Japanese. So maybe you should be less Racist you pig
LOL yeah... I'm the racist asshole... Never mind the fact that I didn't say anything offensive about Japanese players, while you say racist things about NA players :p

and hear i was thinking this thread was about free dinner.

for the OP i think i've come across that dude before too. he threatened mer with a GM and everything as well. so i did the good ole "/em examines you." bout 5. times he changed gear like clockwork. weird.

on the positive side of this i check a random drk in the safehold the other day and he did the same thing. my first thought was "oh geeze not another shy one" but he sent me a tell like 2 seconds later saying he was testing macros. and we ended up conversing for about 5 minutes. wish more people were like that.

I love it when people check me while I solo on blm. They try to get a glimpse of my gear at any instant, and wind up losing it due to gear changes. I normally change gear about 20-25 times per pudding kill, which takes a little over a minute. They normally give up after 2-3 tries, or get a good look at my hMP gear when I stop and sit down.

I always type /blush when someone checks me just for laughs.

I put on the filter, mainly because sometimes it can get annoying when I get checked by a lot of people. I never yelled or go "GM!!!" if someone checked me though.

I find it hilarious that when someone says "Theres a filter for it" they say "GM!!"
Do these people WANT to get checked? But you gotta ask first? Or do they have a giant stick up their butt and want to yell at anyone who does.

Call me ignorant or w/e. But there's NOTHING cultural in FFXI. Theres culture in who plays, but FFXI itself does not have culture. Check feature is not a cultural thing. I don't care if your english or jp, turn the damn check filter on and quit bitchin. Oh and please shut the hell up if you have a bazaar on, expect to get checked if you are selling something.

It's like going to a store, but before you enter you knock on the window and ask the workers "Can I enter your store?" and wait for a response. Doesn't that seem a bit stupid? There's a door, just enter @_@

And this Serio guy, is he an overal dick?

/check!

I always check you as you always seem to be wearing stuff that looks pretty.

I usually check Ninja's around my level or higher, just to see if i'm missing anything or if perhaps they have other ideas for gear. No one usually has a problem with it, Raizondetre is a complete wanker though. I checked him and he sent a tell saying <English> <Too Weak> so I sent one back saying <--- <German> to which he replied <Nice To Meet You> ^^ and walked off......
