Checking *bum bum bumm*

I don't think it is rude, unless the other person TELLS you that they don't want you checking them. I mean, I don't think you deserved to be blacklisted, but if he had issues about it, and thought you did it again (on purpose as far as he knows) then yeah - he probably thought you were being rude. YES - you can put filters up...it is just a matter of taste I think.

I don't mind being examined...unless I notice the SAME person doing it repeatedly - simultaneously. That makes me want to grab them by their head and yell - SLOW DOWN AND LOOK AT EVERYTHING BEFORE YOU ARE DONE - FREAK. I check people...sometimes more than once - but never more than twice in a row - because it annoys me when it happens to me. I had a guy in my party in Shitadel a month or so ago who thought it was funny to "check" everyone in the party 20+ times a piece while we were waiting for our 6th to show up. He retarded about it. Trying to chat with your party about strategy while the "IAMASS examines you" keeps filling the screen SUCKS, and is rude and childish.

If people get upset when I check them - I apologize. If they are overly upset, I tell them to get a life. LOL Works for me anyway. ;)

checking without asking and doing nothing/complementing me, I dont mind

checking without asking then saying "OMFG!!! UR GEAR SUX!!! LOLZ!"

they just get a slap and I tell them to shut up.

No-ones complained to me about checking, if you dont like it, just turn the filters on.

F it.

I don't think that checking people is rude. I do think that checking people over and over again is just annoying and i have blacklisted people for it.

But the fact of teh matter is that you can turn the stupid filters on, and if you want to be a dick about people cehcking you go ahead, its just IMO some elitest crap when people get so huffy about it.

So blacklist me if you want for checking you once or twice, if you're gonna take shit that seriously I'm not really that interested in playing with you.

I will be honest, my bro and I are fundamentaly sadistic assholes... My bro checked Roofie one time and he got bitchy, so my brother chased him around jeuno for like 20 minutes spam checking him. It had to be of the funniest things I ever saw. My brother also has a macro that goes, "Jonason has examined you." Do that in lower Jeuno and its AMAZING how many people change gear.

Bring it to real life a second.

Do you walk up to people with eyes shut and ask: "May I look at you?"

No...

So how is it different than walking up to a guy in game and looking em over? I mean shit... they are wearing the stuff. It's not Like I am asking to look in your inventory...

God I swear Square should have never put that in the fucking game. "Playerx Examines you." So fucking what. Quit being a god damn control freak and let it go... The only reason people get pissed is because it announces a factor you have no control over.

It's like Square gave us a gift, a sixth sense if you will, one that allows you to feel when you are being looked at! YAY!

I just have a problem when i'm camping something or farming and somebody /checks me over and over and over. Pisses me off.

Of course I should just turn the filter on but it's all the way in the Config menu.

Not quite the same Phraust.

There's looking at someone, and then there's examining someone. I can look at your clothing and face, but would you like someone leaning in and checking all the designer labels? Maybe feels a bit like a violation of space.

Don't know really. To clarify, I don't actually mind if someone checks me, but I think people should ask first just in case the person may happen to mind. Afterall, they can't prevent you checking them, it just feels more polite to ask for me, when I'm curious. (rarely)

There is no safe answer. I have had people get up set with me checking them with out asking, and I’ve had people call me a n00b when I did ask them.

Checking is more than just /check. It's not even there so that people can see the quality of your gear. What it's actually for is to size up an /anon mage to beg for a mage favor when your shoutspamming is ignored. At least, that's how it is in my experience.

Noob: WHY WON'T NE1 WARP II ME?!?!? I NED A WARP II PLZ. CAN SUM1 WARP II ME? 500 GILZ

Crowd: *silence*

(Pompidou walks by.)

"Noob examines you."

(in /tell) Noob: Warp II me plz.

That's why I find checking to be annoying. I don't mind simply being checked. Actually I like it when people admire my gear. But leave it at a check. If I ignored your shouting, it means I don't want to help you. And if I'm /anon and ignoring your shouts, it means I really don't want to help you. If I'm /anon, ignoring your shouts, and in a pt, I don't have a suitably negative expletive to describe the person that /checks only to get a favor.

LOL!!!

I enjoy the people who check you WHILE you are in a party...WHILE you are fighting...then stand infront of you while the party is attacking - wait until the mob is dead THEN ask you for a warp2 or tele. As if it was less rude to stand in your face and wait for you to be done DURING a battle. *I get this with my RDM as well  people are idiots.

Answere dthis sooo much XD

Examining seems to be similar as too looking at some...really, really closely/carefully. Kindof like an invasion of personal space =P

I ask just for the sake of it...but I don't really mind if I'm randomly checked, unless it's by Jender, because I don't think I'd be able to defend myself

I dont know what you're going on about Firestreak, lol

This is a videogame, and fundamentally that's all it comes down to

You shouldn't be getting offended (at all) by somebody /checking you

Period

It's downright foolish, and whoever it was that first said or thought it was 'rude' for another player to use an in-game feature needs their head examined IMO.

Like i said in my first post, if you're getting offended (i mean seriously, you are personally OFFENDED, you are actually stepping back from your PC or PS2 and saying to yourself, "W...hat the? Did that guy just /check me? Jesus CHRIST, who the hell does he think he is? <Gear Change Macro>") then maybe you need to /check yourself and maybe see some deeper issues :)

this is of course my opinion :)

I'd like to add that I only put the filter on because I see it as unnecessary text, like "Other's missed attacks" "Others Damage taken" and such.

Getting checked won't hurt you. Neither will /shout, /say, /tell, /party, nothing. At the end of the day... It's just text.

When I want to find out a persons level, job, subjob etc. I just use /sea.

I try to not check folks on purpose, unless the fackers have Bazaar up. Then I'll go in for a second, leave, then look at their gear and the fackers can't get mad! muaha O_o

/sigh

I've said it before, I'll say it again. I'm not offended by being checked, personally.

I said some people do find it rude. I've given you the justification as to why some people may consider it rude.

If you don't find it rude, good for you. But it is damn common knowledge some people do consider it rude. From whatever mindset they are in. Certainly the Japanese consider it rude in a greater number than most NA do, if it's a cultural thing, so what?

You have not given me a clear reason as to: Why not ask someone if it's ok to check them? If nothing else, I would prefer to come off as respectful to a perfect stranger. Maybe that's just how I am sometimes. I've heard a lot of arguments as to why people don't personally get offended, but the fact remains that for whatever reason, some people do get offended.

It does seem somewhat rude to me. As Nasya said, people can gauge your level and job simply by using the search function. So by /check you are looking over their gears. People have the option to /anon but not the option to hide /check. Whatever gears people have, this is their own business. (exceptions can of course be argued for party members) But regardless, there is no rule in stone in terms of common courtesy that looking at other people's equipment without permission is ok or not ok.

So just ask, what's the big deal? If you don't find it rude, it doesn't mean they won't find it rude. If they tell you they find it rude in the first place, why continue checking them just to annoy them? Their gears is their business.

All I can say that the people who are offended by being checked can just turn off the notice of it. Checking is always going to happen, I've never asked to check someone, and I've only been asked to be checked once.

As for the fact that 'you arent looking at them, you are looking at their stuff' it wouldnt matter if the check message was 'gives you a wedgie and looks at the brand of your underware' Do you know why? Because you can either blacklist everyone that does it, or you can simply turn the notice off.

People, if seeing the message is offensive, turn off the message. Other than seeing the message, checking doesnt affect you in any way whatsoever. People that complain about being checked but do nothing about it are just looking for a reason to complain. What I've also noticed is that it is "high level" people looking for something to hold over newer player's heads. I bet these people wouldnt think twice about checking someone who is in a single digit level.

Its stuff like this that makes the game no fun. Lots of high level players are on power trips and expect newer players to bend over backwards while they feel they can treat them however they want. Luckily, people on this board are an exception, for the most part.

Hehe, if they dont want people to see their gear, why dont they just have it unequipped all the time?

You're all just echoing the same 2 points over and over again.

1: It doesn't bother you personally
2. There is an option to filter it if you don't like it.

Some people feel like it's an invasion of privacy. There is no way to stop from being checked. It is a more in depth than just "looking at someone." You are examining their gear, looking at every piece of equipment they have and all the stats.
Is it that hard to type to someone, "Check ok?" It's 2 freaking words. They can either say yes or no.
If they say yes, then you check, end of story.
If they say no, then by checking them you would have offended them.(I've never even heard of someone actually saying no)

This is a very important point here, that I'm going to emphasize. This isn't if checking is rude. This is about if you should simply check and make sure the person doesn't consider it rude. Just because you don't find something rude, doesn't mean they won't. Obviously enough people find it rude to make a discussion about it.

The idea that if someone finds it rude means there's something wrong with them is just blatently stupid and immature. All things done out of politeness are simply based on customs and have nothing to do with actual logistics.

Example: If someone was from a culture that didn't like their picture taken, would you run around taking snapshots of them for kicks? Some of the people in this thread obvious would. It gives me the feeling that I'm arguing with a bunch of 10 year olds.(not all but some)
Or better yet, would you run around saying whoever has the custom that taking a picture is like stealing their soul has problems? It's just how they are. You by taking the picture are interacting with them in a way. Just like checking.

In short: Cut the bullshit and grow up. Just ask them if they want to be checked. Two god damn words is not a strain.

I'd also like to address this in a bit more detail. Often when people don't understand personally why someone is offended, they want to assume the person is just making it up. This is usually wrong. Most of the people who consider checking without permission rude would not in fact check "single digit" people. I really don't know what you base this conclusion on. Maybe you've had a lot of bad experience with the higher level people, hell I recall you going off on how villarel was snobby to you for simply asking "Do I know you?" when you asked him for help randomly out of the blue. I would say, 95% of the rude experiences I have are with lower level people. Why is this? If you don't have any online manners the odds are getting parties are higher level will be more difficult. Of course times they are a changing. Oh well. In with the new out with the old?
