Checking *bum bum bumm*

IF YOU DONT LIKE BEING CHECKED

TURN YOUR CHECK FILTER ON.

I will once again state something as to why that logically doesnt' work for some people.

If the problem is you don't like reading the message, as if unneeded text, a filter is a perfect solution.

If it's a question of personal privacy, it's like saying...
"Well quit bitching about that peeping Tom, you don't have to look at him watching you undress,:

Yes I know, just like my sexual assault example, this is a different magnitude, but the logic is the same.

You know, I never thought about it from that angle before. You're right that those two things are a completely different magnitude, but I see your point.

I myself still won't ask people if they want to be checked, but I will try to respect those that don't want to be checked.

Sadly, there is no way for someone to know you don't want to be checked without telling them first. Leaving a message for someone in your /sea comment doesn't always work, as not everyone looks at you with /sea before checking you. And a bazaar comment doesn't work either, as you need to check someone to see their bazaar comment. So, there's no way to tell someone you don't want to be checked until after they check you...

At least... not yet...

Okay in that case, what is the root cause of it making them feel bad. Do they feel they are being judged? Do they not like sharing what gear they wear to play better? or does not having control over something just make them feel bad cause any NA can do it to them and they have no power over it. and as I stated before it can't be something rooted in Japanese culture if it was an element that was put into a game.

If I were to ask everyone I check in Jeuno before I checked them It would take me an hour to get to the Auction House.... wait, It already does =/ .
Point is Everyone knows where the filter is, use it. This is as stupid as the little punk boys in the street, you know the ones, If you happen to glance over to their side of the street they get all swollen and start flailing their arms around yelling "what you lookin at? " " got a problem?"
I have a very hard time believing that the text would be somehow offensive and left as it was for any length of time , especially in a game 1st released in Japan.
Besides I leave my filter off, and I'm offended I don't get Checked out more often ^^

Reasons I check people:

1. you check me, I check you

2. You have a peice of gear on that looks cool

3. You are a QCDN member

4. You have a bazaar up

5. I'm in a party with you

6. You are playing a job that I am and I want to compare gear.

If someone doesnt like me checking them, they can tell me and I wont do it again. I'll probably suggest that they do turn on their filter so that they wont know about it though.

This game is all about the gear you have, its no secret. If you dont like people seeing what your character has on, well, thats just too bad. People arent checking you to imagine your character naked, stalk you, or rape you... and if they are they have problems. The bottom line is that this is a game, ie, not real life... there are no consequences to being checked other than people knowing what your character has on, and if you really do think its an invasion of your privacy, well then why are you playing an MMORPG where gear is so important?

Anyways, I do respect people that dont want me checking them, but I'm not going to ask permission to do it... ever.

First off, I don't need a dossier of all the reasons you check people. I know why the check function exists. A HUNDRED PEOPLE ON THIS POST HAVE SAID WHY THEY CHECK.

Secondly, your only response to the simple request of why not ask first, is that "it's too bad". What's too bad? That you're going to not respect them? You're listing all the reasons you personally arne't offended by /check, but you are ignoring the reasons others are. You're just rewording your the same post over and over again and saying it in different ways.

I never said they are stalking or raping people by checking, I said simply they are violating a certain privacy. The privacy of "my gear is my business" at least to an absolute stranger. Some people see that distinction, others don't. Some people mind being checked, so it's better to just go under the assumption the person might and work from there.

Note only all that, but the incedent in question > The person specifically asked not to be checked after the initial check. This person requested his privacy be kept and was not only met with no apology but another /check.

Firestreak, judging by the responses I get from you, I can tell you dont like me. Thats fine... I pretty much knew that when you told me that I was whats wrong with this game.

I listed my reasons because I thought that I hadnt made it clear that I dont just randomly go around checking people, especially if they ask me not to.

I expect you will call me stupid/tell me to quit the game soon. I dont really care. How am I disrespecting someone by not asking to use a check function? I know what gear they have, so what? If they dont want people to know, why dont they just take it all off? Its like putting on a shirt with "dont read this" printed across it.

Anyways, I do agree with you that if I would check someone and they told me to stop, I wouldnt check them again. That is bad manners, even if I dont see anything wrong with checking them in the first place.

Besides, some people may mind other things. Maybe I mind people using emotes toward me... would it be reasonable to have everyone ask if they can emote something? Thats the angle I see things from. I'm not even talking about any cultural difference, but I do find it hard to believe that if Japanese find it so offensive that they would include it in a game, that doesnt make any sence.

So if I havent made myself clear, and you still hate my guts, thats fine with me.

-Ham

I dont know, but I think people are yelling at ME cause they think I hate being checked. I don't >.> Check me all you want, i don't care. I did see the same person today and I checked him and he didnt flip out, mehbe he put filter on..

So for example, say i'm a person that doesn't like somebody sending me a /tell unless they personally come up to me, /bow and then /kneel.

If you don't do these two things prior to sending me a /tell, I have the right to be offended and as such from now on, whoever out there wants to send somebody a /tell needs to take a precaution and /bow then /kneel before hand just so they don't accidentally offend somebody first.

do you see how ridiculous this is?

and yes, this is just as easily comparable to asking permission to /check, as (in the eyes of MANY people) asking permission to use an in-game feature used to inspect others gear (that is already approximately 40% viewable anyways) is incredibly ridiculous, and strange.

this is a game, not real life.

if you're being personally offended by this, step back and go out in the real world for a while. you seriously need to be {Taking a break}.

I hate not giving credit where it's due, but I do recall someone mentioning a problem of Japanese women on trains being sexually assaulted and not crying out. Like "silent suffering" seems to be part of their mentality.

Ok well last time i read something similar was in the link posted in this thread: Those silly japaneses. And it linked to here.

Hope this helped

I also suggest you read what Nasya said, because unlike other people who are just assuming, she actually speaks Japanese and has been in Japanese linkshells.

I am japanese, I grew up with this bullshit, and thats all it is insecure bullshit.

Most are probably little kids who don't like the "stink eye" and wanna fight when you look at them wrong.............

As a child I was also guilty of this.... lol =P

Blackmagic, I don't hate you, and I never told you to quit. I just noticed you implied that "higher levels" were guilty of a double standard, which seems to be something you are historically sensitive about. It's kind of funny considering you're pretty high level at this point but I guess I struck a nerve?

btw my comment has no connection to this..............

Dont even get me started on that bullshit.......

Personally I found a good solution to the checking problem. Im always naked safe for a rusty subligar. That way theres no reason to check me, unless your into Dirty <Subligars> 0_0

I dont like elietists, I do like high level people. When I complain, I am talking about an elietist, and elietists just happen to be high level. They feel that because they are high level they are owed respect for things that they wouldnt think twice about doing to lower level people. This is often the case with them getting mad about check...

When I first started playing, back before I really knew what the heck I was doing, I didnt have awesome gear, or a linkpearl. I was exploring around east sar, around the area where spiny spipi spawns (of course I'd never even heard of a NM before) when someone comes up and checks me... I check him back and then get a tell, somewhere along the lines of how dare I examine him without asking, and I was called a low level noob for doing it.

That was probably the moment the game stopped being 100% fun for me. And for a long time, yes I did hold all high levels as being jerks. I started making friends in the game though, and now I realize that there are very few people like this... at least from what I can see now that I have gained in level.

This is why I see getting mad about check as a problem, at least for the english speaking population. As for the japanese speakers, I dont know what to think, I've heard that it is offensive and that it isnt. Personally, I find it hard to believe that a japanese company would have something that offensive in a game they make.

If someone nicely tells me that they dont like being checked after I do it, I'll say that I am sorry and that this happens rarely to me. I would also not check them again, out of respect. However, I still fail to see how turning the notice off wont solve the problem.

Maybe I just view the game differently from others, because I dont look at the screen and see anything but a videogame. I realize that things that happen in game dont reflect upon my life outside of the game. Sadly, there probably are people that use this game as an escape from their lives, and thus view it as their chance to shine. Maybe this is the mentality of the elietists? Maybe this game is the only thing they succeed in.... it still doesnt make it right though. How do you treat others that may not have things as good as you? If your neighbor doesnt have as nice a car, do you shove it in his face every chance you get; will you tell him he has to earn the right to even lay eyes upon your car?

Sigh... I'm rambling again...

I just hope this makes some sence. I just find that if 1 person out of 100 find checking offensive, it is easier for me to appologise to that one person than to ask all 100 if I may check them. I mean them no disrespect, and i hope the silent sufferers are able to stand up for what they think is right as well.

If a person is annoyed by anonymous invites, or job specific favors, we tell them to go anon. And they do, because changing one option in their menu is much easier than getting 2,000 people to change their way of thinking. If a person is bothered by shouting, for example, in a place like Lower Jeuno, we tell the person to use their shout filter. You'll never put a stop to shouting in Lower Jeuno. If you don't want to hear from a specific person, you blacklist them. It's not realistic to expect the person to go out of their way to keep out of your way. It is realistic to change one option in your settings and not worry about it. Whenever people have people related problems, we refer them to the appropriate filter. Why is /check any different? You'll never get the thousands of Vanadiel residents, most of whom are ignorant of the issue a few people have with being checked, to stop randomly checking. It's not going to happen. This issue should be treated like every other similar issue. Fix the problem on your end, if you have a problem with it, because you won't get everyone else to fix the problem on their end. Don't like /check? Use the filter. It solves every other problem, so use common sense and let it solve this one too. This post wasn't directed at any one person.

*ding* I think we have a winner here, folks...

People go anon to avoid getting /tells, but people still often complain. Check the flameboard, there's quite a few posts about it.

Also an issue for many people. Who wants to filter shouts? Miss out on impotant messages. This has been widely debated too, and I feel shouting for no particular reason or a stupid one is rude.

If you don't want to hear from a specific person, you blacklist them. It's not realistic to expect the person to go out of their way to keep out of your way.

Yet again, we blacklist people, but then we go around saying shit about them because of how much they pissed us off. And to warn others of their backward-ass behavior. The fact that we can blacklist them does not change the fact they were rude.

I never expect people to stop checking me. I realize it is part of the game. However if you want to argue to me that it is fact not rude, especially after a person has specifically asked to not be checked, I will point out it is in fact rude.
