cut your hair or don't come back to school.

Shit I didn't know I had to be in a metal band to have long hair and we all must be hippies for having long hair...

Oh wait I discredited your post when you made up a word for professionalism.

He's too Metal for the word "Professionalism". Long hair was cool back when I was in 7th - 8th grade, then it just kind of got to be a real pain in the ass to keep up with it so I cut it. And yeah just heard about this story this morning at school, our whole class actually had a discussion about it lol. Sucks.

I had the same problem/ fun explaining them to my mom lol. As soon as she comprehended why it was called that way she even got a laugh out of it. Go mom!

I tried explaining it to my parents a few years ago, they thought I was just making shit up and being ridiculous and completely dismissed it.

I make shit up all the time while talking to my mom and she believes it, then out of the kindness of my heart (whatever left there is) I tell her I am joking.

I keep long hair because it helps cover up my giant forehead. It's not as long as I had it in HS speaking of which I need another chopping soon its getting a bit too long now.

Yeah, I actually need to get a trim real bad myself. Tried to squeeze one in for this friday but the only time they had open was at 4:00 and I go to work at 5:00 so I'll have to wait till next week. =/

Yeah...I have a problem with bright lights, so I wear a hat and some hair over my eyes all the time. One of my friends was straightening my hair a few weeks ago and she pulled it up out of my eyes and clipped it or something, and I made the comment that my forehead hasn't felt air in years, she thought that was hilarious, but she was pretty stoned. When she did that though I was literally squinting, and we were just sitting in a room at night lighted by your average 60watt bulbs.

Man, four years to get to the middle of his back? Four years without cutting my hair, I'd look like Cousin Itt.

After my hair got long (like below the ears) I noticed my hair started taking longer to grow out, so I could understand why it might take four years. Then again, not everyone's hair is exactly alike so who knows.

Heh, I had long hair in HS, long hair in college, and long hair now. It hasn't stopped me from doing extracurricular activities, graduating, finding a job, or anything for that matter. My HS was pretty lax on dress code and appearances. We were actually encouraged to be original, which I can imagine isn't the same for most schools.

it took 6 months to grow my hair from shoulder length down to the middle of my back >.>

Anyway, when I was in middle school, we weren't allowed to die our hair unnatural colors... it was public school. Also, in high school, girls weren't allowed to wear clothes that exposed their "midriff" but that was about it really.

On a slightly related note. My husbands hair was long when he was in high school. When I met him he was keeping it shaved. Now, I am making him grow it out cause longer hair is teh sex.

Private schools can be extremely anal about dress and grooming. The high school I went to was a fairly pretentious catholic one, and they had all sorts of crazy rules about our uniform. Pretty similar to the ones Lucki posted, only with a few original ones because we had the whole blazer, tie, slacks and school emblem sort of affair. When I got a piercing over the summer, I was forced to remove it under threat of expulsion. A friend of mine was in a similar situation, only his got infected when he took it out.

If there is some kind of code he is violating by having his hair at that length, then he will have to cut it. It's not about freedom of expression or individuality - it is about the fact that when you enroll in a school (particularly a private one), you're agreeing to abide by all their rules and protocols. He should have been aware of this when he joined. The alternative would be to keep his hair and attend another school.

If it's a private school, too bad for the guy. If it's public school then...well, that's kind of weird. I went to public school and they had no problem with long hair, baggy clothes, mohawks, liberty spikes, colored hair, etc. Hell, I had hot pink hair for a while and my teachers liked it

I don't like it either that once you try to get a job you'll generally have to change all that, but that's how it is. Suck it up and deal. There's a huge difference between having long hair and having long hair that you take care of, and the vast majority of guys I've seen that have long hair, have some nasty ass overgrown and unbrushed hair. I don't blame anyone for not wanting to hire someone that looks like they think hygiene is a chore.

I'm kind of on both sides of the issue. Some guys can pull off long hair and look good... others just look really bad =/ Sorry guys.

Anyways, while its not fair for the school to deny education based on the length of a guy's hair, it only reflects the voice of the real world.

In my field of work, you cannot have any piercings, any visible tattoos, and unnatural hair colour. Some places will regulate the length of your hair, for both men and women, restrict the kind of accessories you wear (IE only allowed to wear wedding band), the length of facial hair and demand that women only come to work in a skirt.

It sucks to conform, and sure it sucks to lose your right for expression through your appearance, but sucks even more not to have a job, ya know?

Do you think we care if people think we look bad or not with long hair? We make the choice personally I like my hair long because I have nice thick slightly wavy hair as well it covers up my giant forehead fairly well. Seriously I stopped caring what people thought Freshman year when I decided to grow my hair out.

Yes some places will have a dress code, but if they hire an employee with long hair, I can only guess you work with food, there are hair nets and rubber bands to keep the hair back. As I said its discriminatory to fire or not hire someone based on having long hair and the company can have a shit storm coming at them if someone really wanted to pursue a lawsuit for discrimination.

Actually jack ass, I'm a funeral director, but thanks for assuming I work with food.

in Sweden we can pretty much wear whatever we like. That's why we have 12-year old girls dressing like Paris Hilton with a mask of make-up. Seriously, if you dragged our finger over their face, you'd see a 3mm deep scratch in their make-up. Its disgusting, really.

I always donate my hair to locks of love. Anytime anyone I work for mentioned me cutting it, I just tell them why I grow it long. The primary reason is because I don't care what my hair looks like, but there are bald little girls getting treated for cancer that do care. I figure I'll help em out.

My brother does this as well.

This is also what I did when I decided to chop all of mine off. May as well put it to good use instead of just letting it hit the floor only to have it swept up and thrown away later.

If you make the choice, you accept the consequences. Short hair for males, natural colours only (sometimes even natural dyed colours will get you fired/not hired), no piercings or visible tattoos are pretty standard rules for any job. Even if the customer isn't seeing you. This isn't news to anyone, nor is this a sudden reactionary movement started by yuppies. It's just the way things work.

No it really isn't discriminatory. That's like saying not hiring someone with bad hygiene, even if you're not working with food, or encountering any other person in their daily job, is discriminatory.

You can go get a haircut. But you can't, in the same way, get married, get divorced, give your kids up for adoption, change your race, change your nationality, change your ethnic background. A company can decide who their image (ie. their employees) are. If it's something that's easily changed without religious basis, sorry, but you're out of luck. You're not entitled to be hired by anyone. I had the same problem. I had the whole liberty spikes thing through high school, and two piercings. They are now gone, and I look relatively normal. I got a job randomly through interviews in around 2 weeks looking professional, and when I still had the spikes and stuff, I had to have a friend basically hire me. And even then I had to cover up the piercings and make my hair a normal colour. That's just the way it is

Seriously, do you want someone helping you or working for you that looks like he just came out of some basement where they've been watching Labyrinth all day, or someone who's well groomed, and looks like he showered today.

It's just the way things work. I'd like to eat nothing but ice cream and get all my nutrients from it and not gain a single pound, and get paid for it, but it's just not in the cards. It's the same thing.

You can whine about how it sucks, but it's not going to change anything. Suck it up.

Welcome to the real world.
