Development of FFXIV and QCDN

Flameboard, no thanks. At least not straight away. Good Times for FFXI should just be out in general and one for FFXIV is fine. FFXI Good Times will just be full of "I'm quitting the game for FFXIV" like anyone would care. If people want to brag about what they get, just have them make it in General Discussion.

In regards to what you should cut down on the XI forums, I would say it depends on the ratio of who is staying with XI or moving on to XIV. It seems so iffy, several people I talk to are saying they'll just stay with XI since the job levels are increasing etc. If that's the case, I wouldn't get rid of job discussion. Is there a need to cut down the forum size? Seems unfair to limit it to those who will stay with XI (in terms of talking about gaming, media, reality, etc) Maybe create a poll asking who is remaining in XI and who is moving on to XIV. You'd get a better idea of what would need to go. Granted, most of us are retired. I would assume that means we're all moving on to XIV. However, several retired probably won't move on and just use the XI forums as a way to communicate. (which is why I think the poll would be beneficial to know if keeping or losing XI forums would be fair or pointless.)

I do think having two entirely separate sites would be beneficial. Maybe post a link to the sister site but should it really be called QCDN? I doubt the server we get on to would be Quetz.

Keeping something intact for senior members who move over would be nice. I like my 2004 join date. Not that it gives me any credibility >_> But maybe avoid something that creates a distinct separation between old and new members. Don't want "inner circle" issues or a midgard/quetz argument all over again. I'm probably over thinking it all. Take what you think is good and dismiss that which you think is silly XD

Why use a server-name-based naming scheme at all? The likelihood that we (figuratively, myself not included) would end up on the same server is slim.

For my tastes, I think a name needs to be thought of immediately before all other planning, prior to any potential domain squatting.

Using FFXI forums to talk to friends is kinda the same thing as using off-topic to talk to friends. I don't think there will be a use for job forums because people can ask those questions in General Discussion. No flameboard, because it's shit already anyway. No good times, because that can go into General as well. Dynamis Scheduling will probably die anyway. Crafting is barely used, AH is occasionally used, and Linkshell has been used less and less. Make a General, Auction/Crafting, and Linkshell Discussions and that should be fine.

I just don't want to have to go to two sites if some people don't want to go to the new forums.

That's a good point. Not the "I doubt we're all going to be on the same server" because apparently SE said we can pick servers, so someone needs to quickly make a character on a server and say "we're all going to be on this server." But the whole server based name? Why not keep QCDN but instead of it being "Quetzalcoatl Daily News" but "Quick Central Daily News." Bad example, but we could just always pick a name that isn't even relevant to the name of the server. I mean shit, BG was based on a name of a linkshell wasn't it? KI is based on killing a summon. And Alla isn't relevant to just FFXI at all.

FFDN - Final Fantasy Daily News.
EDN - Eorzea Daily News - similar in the vein of NYDN (New York Daily News)

the possibilities are pretty limitless, it just takes some creativity.

I'm loving EDN to tell you the truth.

Edit - I think I'm having some trouble understanding some of these posts as well and it's likely that I'm not properly portraying my ideas through words, so let me work on a image type of sitemap that I think should help better outline what's going on in my annoying brain. Not sure when I'll get to it as I am slated to go on vacation this Wednesday, but I'm hoping to be finished soon.

The first thing I really liked about the forum back when I transferred was the ease to get infomartions on ls, ls events, scheduling, AH, etc. I was happy to finally find a structured place where I could find all those informations. I actually compared it to an info kiosk back then lol. I hope that we'll keep that kind of structure for XIV.

As for the flameboard, well it's a chance to take. If it's not there, people will just find whatever place they want to bitch and moans on the forum. At least with a flameboard, people will post there and that's it. Maybe it's possible to make it visible only to people who wants to read/write there? Just an idea like that.

If the flames were good and not thrown off-topic everytime, I wouldn't mind. But the flameboard is just horrible right now. We won't need one straight away in FFXIV either. Maybe later on if it gets bad (the people bitching about others in other forums thing) then we an put one in.

@JP: right now, yes. But look at it in 2005-2007. It was great.

But JP, would you like to have flames all over the place or just in one specific spot? I'm sure on day one we'll already have people at each others throat anyway. So why don't we keep it in the first place?

The fact is, there'll be a lot of unbridled fury if we get rid of the flameboard that will be unleashed across the boards, with or without rules against it. And yes, I do think flames will experience a kind of rebirth once the game gets set in stone. I'm sure the first few weeks will be full of "he stole all my rats/puk hatchlings/whatever", but after people get higher in level and start grouping with each other more, it'll be pretty much like XI Flameboard's "golden days".

Not read anyone's responses on the case yet but here's my opinion on the flame board:

Yeh I'm kinda for keeping the flame board because it keeps the hate centered for the most part. And then it allows us to use the rule "look, this shit is for the flame board".

It is kinda silly to maybe have a FF14 flame board at release of the game seeing as they would most likely be very petty and people would still be learning shit anyway. Maybe 6 monthish down the line this may be kinda acceptable. Having a flame board on the site before the game is even out for a while may scare people off and leave a bad impression on others.

But like I was kinda saying, at the beginning of the game there would be no purpose of the Flameboard. I mean really? What can people be flaming each other about in the very beginning? If we want to make one like a couple months in or so, then sure why not. But in the very beginning of FFXIV? People will see the Flameboard and make really shit/petty flames because there won't be any huge drama in the beginning.

I had always pictured this coming site as being a sort of sister site to what qcdn is right now. I'm glad to hear that's actually going to be more or less true. Regarding how I think that site should be structured, I've created an image (see spoiler tag below). It may actually represent a nice portal / splash page for the site, in that users can select which part of the site they'd like to go to based on what game, if any they wish to discuss.

With respect to a few issues:

1. Mass unbanning & reset of all stats: I like this idea on some level, but not entirely. I'm all far giving some people who were simply being retards / drunk posting / had a bad day a second chance. However, for those people who made it their business to be absolute pricks, I believe they should remain banned.

My preference on a stats reset would be only having them be reset on the XIV site, and keeping them as they are for the XI site.

2. Inclusion / exclusion of the Flameboard: Aside from (at times) being a source of entertainment, this board has also given us the opportunity to warn each other about people like the asshats mentioned in point #1. I believe it would be a mistake to get rid of that all together. If you don't want it to be a flameboard, make it a place *only* to warn others about players to avoid, and have it be required that there are screenshots to substantiate claims. That way there's no back and forth he said she said crap for us to sift through. Honestly I do enjoy the drama on the flameboard when the flame doesn't suck, so my preference would be to keep it as is.

As for a waiting period before this forum becomes available, I say maybe. If it's decided that there be a waiting period, I wouldn't make it too long. There's sure to be people who will capitalize on a fresh start.

3. Where to put off-topic content: There's actually a very simple solution to this. Since off-topic stuff really has nothing to do with either FFXI or FFXIV, we can have both sites (XIV & XI) link to the off topic forums, even if we end up hosting them on the FFXIV site. I suggest keeping them a bit separate as you can see in the image, but hosting them on the XIV site and having the XI site re-direct to the new location should be a reasonable solution to keeping off-topic forums on both sites.

4. Consolodation of FFXI forums: I honestly don't think enough people will be leaving FFXI by the time the new XIV site launches to justify consolodating all of our present FFXI forums/sections into a single forum within the XIV site. Maybe in time, but for now I suggest doing some minor forum removals and playing it by ear.

5.What URL should be used: All I can really say about this is that those staying in XI would likely appreciate keeping the present url we use for QCDN. I suggest doing that, then having a second URL more aligned with what we use for the XIV site point to QCDN as well. See the included image for other URL suggestions (I like the eod.org idea too, though things may get way more complicated than they are for QCDN if we start inviting multiple servers to schedule events, flame, sell items, etc.).

Site structure image (will be quite large for those of you using an 800x600 resolution):

I still think Neighborhood Watch was a great idea, but the way Sculli implemented it was pretty balls.
Probably something between Flameboard and Neighborhood Watch, but what the hell is that?

I would love a Neighborhood Watch type thing as well, but I would like to be able to reply to the "watch" if it's on you. I would hate to be flamed/whatever and can't say anything about it or have to make a new thread if it's false. But the whole "I like the drama" thing is the reason why I don't like the flameboard. All these people like the drama and have to get involved with a flame, and therefore it goes to shit.

I'm not quite sure if you were around when we tried Neighborhood Watch, JP.
It was basically a lighter and fluffier Flameboard that an old admin put in after having gotten rid of the Flameboard for a period of time. It was... pretty sloppy, to say the least.

I wasn't, but I've heard enough about it to get the gist of what it is.

I agree with this. And I think that if we do add a flameboard, it shouldn't be flame per say, more like idiot awareness. (without it going 20+ pages long) I know people like gossip, but we really don't need the drama.

the rest is just my opinion, and i'm sure people have valid points for wanting to keep it, But It would be nice to see the most popular part of the forum NOT being the flame board. Something positive instead of negative. It's the way it is right now because we let it get that way, and its not necessary for a successful website.
