Do Mind Altering Drugs Make You Cool?

In the past week I've gone to exactly one class, and got drunk twice. I will probably be on the Dean's List again this semester. This in no way means alcohol and skipping classes makes you smart. Just like a druggie doing well in AP Physics means nothing about drugs. (Just the same I did the best out of my AP Physics class and that was before I drank, just to knock out the idea that the "smartest" tend to be druggies)

I in no way meant that doing drugs makes you smart. I was just providing a point that shows that just because you do drugs it doesn't necessarily label you as a lost cause or an idiot. Doing drugs can cause short term memory loss, and such but that doesn't mean it's going to make you fail classes, drop out of school and such.

Sorry, I didn't mean it as a direct reply to you, more just as a general example. As I don't personally know of anyone who does drugs and is doing extremely well in a class, I borrowed your example for my point =P

Oh I gotcha ;)

No, I haven't done drugs, because I've never felt the need to deaden my senses, escape from reality pharmaceutically, see surrealistic nonsensical visions, or just stare at a fucking frisbee for hours on end.

Hmm strange the above "effects" seem out of the ordinary in all experiences of mine.

Getting stoned ~I usually get extremely creative, this is when I write my best poetry or short stories, my wit for some reason is heightened and I seem to have people in stitches quite often. OR, shit and this must be the bad effect, I will go on a cleaning binge and clean every single corner of my apartment for hours upon end, then come down with a movie and munchies. God damn

Let me see OH shroomies ~seems to only heighten the appearance of things. No surrealistic "nonsensical" visions lmao.

Has no one ever stared into a wood fire so deep and intensely they can see the caverns within the white flame as the wood splits and breathes? These little joys on shrooms are a fantastic experience.

My senses have never been deadened...as per above this is obvious.
Nor have I ever escaped from reality, not like "blacking out" while drunk as so many people do. I always know where I am, whom I'm with, and remember why it is I feel the way I do.

Those who zone out after smoking.. consider it a rest, your brain is finally just breathing.. .with all the stress we put our brains and bodies through each day, THAT'S more damaging than getting stoned every once in a while.

I think we're killing ourselves more and more with the expectations and constant stresses and commutes of everyday life. We're dying faster and faster.

Also if their is someone here who is that much against drugs, I want you to do something for me. Go get all of your CDs, tapes, records, and throw them in the garbage, because chances are more than half of those artists were baked when they wrote those songs.

AH HA!! Wish I had read this before my post Solan.. :)

Creativity 101. However I'm not stating that you need to be on anything to feed your creative juices but it's probably a statisically sound fact that most artists write will on something lol ;p

This is the view I'm talking about. I fail to see how you automatically become part of a more educated population. Educated on what, exactly? Again, I'm not trying to attack anyone here, but it boggles my mind how this view continues to stand as acceptable... even to pot smokers.

Ok well I am not what you'd call a pot smoker. I HAVE smoked it, there were times where I had smoked it often, never a lot nor multiple times a day. Now I may at the VERY most once a week and those are really bad months. As of today I'd say it's been 6 weeks since I had a couple tokes, and that's what I have are a couple tokes. I have my own reasons. However I don't look down on anyone who smokes pot, a lot a little I really don't care.

But as far as it increasing one's education it does, but only on the effects of the drug in question. Not in general, fuck they may not have they slightest idea of what natural occuring chemical is present to make them feel what they do.

I happen to know quite a bit on the processes of cultivating a lil somethin somethin for personal use ~.^

When it comes down to it Ex, I have a hard time swollowing arguements from people if they have not experienced something firsthand. That must be understandable. I have never done heroin(nor would I), I think it would be an incredibly stupid thing to do knowing that it is possible I could end up killing myself. However who I am to tell someone for instance who does use it what the effects are if their experiences differ from typical statistics. I don't know what they've experienced.

I don't know, I say speak only of things you know of, otherwise your place is to ask questions.

Just so we are clear, you do know I've stated multiple times that I don't look down on anyone for getting high as long as it isn't adversely affecting someone else. Everyone has their reasons. Also, I used to smoke in high school and college, and it wasn't part of what I would call a lifetime highlight, and yes, all I was doing was asking a question, albeit a loaded one.

Okay, let me ask a few questions

Excalibur and Solan: The quote in your sig is of a serious nature? You're arguing the opposite that it may teach you something substantial, the previous discussions had not mentioned how to avoid the police(which is 'kind of' a learning of some sort) as education, but referred to other separate events from smoking it. Which view are you supporting?

The OP was made in regards to a joke Excal made, but when we(including myself admittedly) took it seriously and posted, you started defending it with the posts saying that it could teach things, then later Solan said the same thing, tone and voice isn't something on the board so were you two joking by having them in your sig and/or being sarcastic?

Mor- If we are friends of those smoking pot and events happen indirectly or directly related to us we have no right to say something? Those experiences coupled with scientific research as well as conclusions based off of that research led to my posts construction.

Statistics are a gauge of certain aspects of reality in this case smoking weed. It doesn't have the same effect on everyone, but the side effects are still there, I don't see why people who don't do it don't have a say in talking about it. It's not like the people that smoke pot and those who don't live in separate dimensions or something=P

Oh yeah absolutely kiddo ^^ I'm just making it clear where I stand :)

i have mixed feelings about people who do drugs

if anything i have to say that my past experience with drugs in my family permanatly turned me off to them (which is a good thing)

backstory:

my uncle would have been turning 37 this march, on march 3rd of 2005 i found him laying in my bathroom dead, he was diabetic, recovering alchaholic, and had multiple heart attacks and open heart surgeries, he smoked like a chimney, never took care of himself and was on more medication then the doctors could prescribe, on top of all of this he was a coke head and sold and smoked marijuana to all the teen junkies in the town, he would trade his medication for crack and just get as high as possible and sleep all the time, so needless to say it wasnt a question of how he would die, it was when. my next door neighbor would supply him with vicodin and oxyconton and all the good shit that will make you sail off into la la land and never thought twice about it, he is 30 years old and still lives with mommy and daddy and doesnt even have a part time job (thats another story) so when it finally happend alot of people where crushed, i was close to my uncle until he gave up on himself, alot of my family tried to help him, and when he gave up on himself they gave up on him as well. after that i swore to myself to never take anything stronger then an advil and i've stayed true to that ever since.

imo taking drugs to run away from your problems is a sign of weakness, a former friend of mine whom i thought shared all the same values as me in the past year fell into this, he started having problems with work and school and his family and such and just started running away from it through weed, acid, ex, and booze, every day he would come over he wreaked of cheap ciggarettes and booze and it was revolting, i stopped wanting to hang out with him and we have'nt spoken since. a couple other friends i had started smoking weed and fuckin worshiping it like a god (putting pot plants all over the place, putting up "smoke weed everyday" msgs on aim, i even called them and they had the sound of them lighting and smoking a bong as their voicemail msg) and i just cant respect that

call me whatever you will but i think it takes more to stay clean these days then becomming another user. i cant stand being around people who smoke, i cant kiss girls who smoke, i dont even wanna be around people who's clothes wreak of it, it just disgusts me. smoking anything doesnt make you cool in my eyes. you'll make more of an impact on me if you take pride in the fact that your clean and sober

People hide behind things like drugs and drinking so they don't expose their true self, because people find it. "Different" ~ Though that "difference" is that of a kind person and one who helps others...by doing drugs, they hide behind that because they don't want to be relied on nor do they want to be seen as different...the original is always worth more then the copy. I hate drugs, never will do them, never tried, have thought about it. Though saw no good outcome. Wont drink, my dad did...caused a broken family. And parents are now divorced. So all in all, I've learned from my parents mistakes, specially with my Grandmother smoking. She had a corn (Weird bump on the knuckle of your toe) removed back when she was a professional ice skater. Well, her smoking stunted the healing of it, and she never took care of it, thus getting gang green and had to have up to her knee amputated. She was too old and thus, she couldn't stand the pain and simply gave up. She died in '01. Because of smoking, so I learned there.

I 100% agree with Excim's post and do pity those like many have stated, who hide behind drugs because they make themselves 'happy' by doing them, it's a simple run away solution that will catch up to you.

Morcheba, it sounds like you're generalizing when you say we have no room to talk about drugs if we never tried them. A lot of people here have tried drugs (well, not a lot, but a few), but are still against it. A lot of people have never tried drugs, but have experienced it first-hand through family and friends. While you can't know how it feels to be high, you don't have to know how it feels to be high, to know that drugs are bad for you. Saying you can't know drugs are bad just because you never tried them, is a lame argument. You might as well put up a sign that says "I'm out of arguments and grasping for straws".

TBH I just think it's a funny quote lol. I don't really care to fight for something I have no big interest in fighting for if that makes sense. The only way it teaches you something about the cops, is to avoid them I guess. Once again, I just found it to be a funny quote

I don't believe I said that once but if I did please do prove me wrong.

Infact, I don't believe I said whether drugs were bad or not anywhere myself let alone stated others can't say whether they're right or not. The issue I have are the inexperienced telling me what ppl are feeling whilst on a drug they themselves have never experienced.

That's like telling someone you fully understand how it feels to hit someone with your car when you've never even been in one.

I have had a kid (yes a kid 15 I believe) tell me all "you" (generalizing) do while stoned is sit around stupified staring at walls and pigging out. That is an unfair statement, THAT is what irriatates me. I have never had this experience, when I asked this person if he had ever smoked pot he said NO.

I'm done.

I guess I never looked at it quite that way. I always read these as signs of someone who is an attention whore, showing everyone "OH HAI- I SMOK 2 HEL YEA!"

I missed this lol. ppl who's sn reflects their pot smoking way, or t-shirts covered in slogans or imagery LMAO. punks.. by that I mean more than likely under 20yrs old. No offense heheh.. but MOST pot smokers don't feel the need to share their habits with the world. >.<

Attention whore is right, unfortunately they don't realize they don't want the kind of attention they'll get with such displays.

I was just thinking...(scary i know) but the only "cool" that you become when doing any sort of drugs is .. ~person 1~ "Hey do you know so-and-so" ~person 2~ "Yeah i know him/her" ~person 1~ "Are they cool"? ~person 2~ "Yeah he/she is cool."

Translation : This person is ok to have around drugs or drug conversation..

So I dont know, thats the only "cool" I know about.
Most smokers are closet smokers until they make a friend.. and eventually find out if they are "cool" or not. I have friends that smoke and friends that dont smoke, and niether know about the other.

But this is just my opinion. This idea i dont believe was touched on.

i find this thread pretty funny. you have the people that think they are psychologist here, "oh well you smoke and drink because you are hiding behind a mask of insecurity" dude, please. then you have the people that say "hey it must be cool since its illegal" as a reason why people smoke or drink. i mean honestly, is this what you really think?

there are many reasons why people smoke and drink, and every single one of them is different in a way. me, personally i enjoy a little smoke or a beer after work because its nice after a 12 hour day on my feet. will i do it the rest of my life? no but for now its a choice that i made and it wasn't a choice based on coolness or being a badass..though..iv been called a badass by the ladies on more then one occasion :)

and sharpe if you have to pity someone because they smoke or drink or do other drugs..then you are a sad sad disgusting person. so are you trying to say that you pity people with depression or pipolar? the drugs they take make them feel better..same freaking thing man. i pity you for being so narrow minded.

I wish I could rate you up for that alas this forum is sucking for me right now ; ;

Either way well said Permerga. I'm in complete agreement!

meh, it just pisses me off that people love to stereotype.
like

"hey hes black he must love ribs basketball stealing and not having a job"

something along those lines lol

I smoke crack because I'm fucking EXTREEEEEEEEEEEEEME!!!
