Does this mean the end of FFXI?

Which MMO has mouse onry movement? O_o

well not really onry but the keyboard movement sucks butt seeing as they are really meant to use the mouse for movement

If SE's new game doesn't suck I'm totally in on it.

I'll only prolly ever play a MMORPG again if it's on the 360, or the PS3. I don't to the PC thing.

But here's to another 5+ years of FFXI! :woot:

if the new mmo is ffxi related I will consider playing it.

if not, no thanks.

I dont think you need to worry about ffxi dieing for AT LEAST 5 years anyways.

Yeah seriously, it takes a while for a game to die. You will get tons of warnings: the servers will consolidate more and more until there's just one, and eventually that one will close too. You'll see it coming guys...just look at DAoC.

Once FFXI goes down, I'm quitting MMOs forever.
Only casual grindan in WoW every few weeks.

The end of FFXI as an MMO was spelled when they stunted level growth with a weak excuse of not wanting to make items trivial. It only exists purely as a 3D social network since then.

I don't know which game you're talking about. Never had a problem with the keyboard movement in FFXI >.>

I don't think that applies at all. Most MMOs need level cap raises periodically because each character can only have 1 job on it. In FFXI you always have something else you can go ahead and exp, so the level cap is really not quite as devastating as you make it out to be.

They won't abruptly end FFXI, FFXI only dies if they 1. Create a much better game with at least quadruple the subscribers as FFXI and then and only then IF they do it at all will they slowly allow FFXI to die off by not adding anything to the game until they can use the reason I'm sorry we no longer have enough playing FFXI to warrent the money we put out on the servers FFXI will discontinue in 60 days. I don't see them coming up with something that good do you?

And in turn they almost always allow you to create more than one character without paying extra or, more recently, disregarding shoehorned class archetypes(e.g. Heavy Armor Class A is a tank, a Cloth Class C is a healer) and allowing classes to perform most group roles, with customizable ability specialization to enhance the roles you want to play, that can be undone to allow another distribution of points should you want to change how you play your character. So no, I don't think that's why the level cap in FFXI has been stagnated for so long.

And don't tell me it's Merits either, because EverQuest had Alternate Advancement(same concept) when the level cap was 60. You could start gaining AA points at level 51. Their level cap is sitting at 75 I last heard. Ofcourse, EQ handled the idea much better as well, with scalable experience distribution between level experience and AA points. Was in increments of 10% I believe.

It's more believable that the level cap hasn't budged in so many years because the Job design team doesn't know what the fuck to do about anything. And more levels would further increase that problem.

Edit: Just checked in on EQ's cap. It's 85 now. And every time they've increased it, they've also added in to AA.

That explains why everyone who attained lvl75 before 2007 has quit by now!

Look at WoW, every time the level cap increases it takes what a month for most people to recap themselves? Increasing the level cap seems to prolong the game by roughly a month or two tops, what -really- prolongs the game is adding new areas monsters and quests, which can be done independent of level raises.

Also lets not forget the level cap was raised to 75 in 2003 (along with sky gods), only two months after the NA release, too soon for it to even of really been an issue to NA players. If what you say is true, then explain the population of NA players if growth was stunted nearly 6 years ago.

A lot of popular MMOs use mouse only movement. Mabinogi and Granado Espada are two that quickly pop into my mind.

As for FFXI, it uses horizontal growth rather than vertical growth. Rather than bump the level cap up 5 levels every year or two, they just add brand new lv 75 content instead, like Einherjar, Salvage, etc to offer lv 75s new challenges and new gear options. It works fine.

I hate to sound like a bitch but, do you suck at reading comprehension? You must've only read one line out of my initial post to come to this conclusion.

Here's what I said:
If it is the end, I'll play their new MMO. Assuming of course, that they don't implement a mouse movement onry system... thats the major thing I hate about all these other MMOs. That and the interface, I think they practically all look the same. Maybe I just got too used to FFXI's UI :P

do you understand yet?

It doesn't take most people a month to recap themselves in WoW. The Casuals surely don't. Only those that have the free time and the desire to do so do it. Level cap increases also bring in new skills and magic, more often than those given to classes in an (almost always futile) attempt to balance them in FFXI.

Of course it's been stunted, population in FFXI hasn't shifted significantly for years. Almost three. And this was after nearly a year of steady decline. There is no denying this, unless you're delusional.

I asked you what MMO you were talking about and this was your response.

Not to mention "All these other MMOs" can infact include FFXI since we're talking about Rapture here.

You're still missing the part where the last level cap increase was only two months after the NA release date. Considering that there are a substantial amount of NA players currently playing, that would indicate that level cap increases doesn't correspond to population. "Almost 3" is not near the nearly 6 years that have passed without a level cap increase.

According to mmocharts.com, ffxi's population peaked roughly two years after the last level cap increase and since falling from peak, remained relatively steady. You also used everquest as an example, and if you notice ffxi's population rose at a much higher rate, and has so far been dropping at a much slower rate and has had a higher peak.

I also wasn't arguing that ffxi's population isn't on a steady decline, I was saying that it has nothing to do with level caps not moving (hence me dating the period of stunted growth being 6 years ago in my post, unlike the 4 years ago that it really stopped growing). Looking at mmocharts, you'll notice that most games have a growth period that last 3-4years followed by a decline ffxi fits the mold perfectly at 3.5 years of population growth and a slower than average decline stage. Being that most mmo's seem to increase level caps oftenish, the fact that ffxi fits in the same pattern as most others only indicate that level cap increases aren't a large factor in mmo population.

Unless you have some strong evidence, claiming level caps has anything to do with it is pure personal speculation.

It'd be "Almost 4," since you'd have to factor in population decline as there were many more people leaving the game than there were joining. And considering how long it took people to level in late 2003/early 2004, hitting that cap took a lot of time for most folks, back when people thought that slow, big damage was the best way to handle things. It wouldn't be any stretch to claim that the average casual player took over a year to get to 75 on their first class. I'd say that yes, people were unsubscribing a few months after they were hitting the level cap.

Just because the level cap is 5 years old doesn't mean the majority of players had been sitting at it for 5 years, when all it shows is that there were a lot more gamers when the SNES came out than there were when the NES did.

MMO popularity has grown wildly. Comparing the population peaks of two games that are years apart when the difference in the amount of people interested in the genre grows rapidly year to year is silly. "Game X released 4 years earlier did worse than Game F, that makes it a terrible game" is a pretty poor counter argument. Especially when the first of the two is released closer to the birth of the genre as a mainstream one, while the other is released later on after some exponential growth in the amount of people interested playing an MMO.

That's like (theoretically) saying Super Mario Bros. is a terrible game because Super Mario World sold more at launch than it did, when all it really shows is that there was a lot more gamers in 1991 than there were in 1985.

Level caps surely contribute. But so does aged content that still has to be done to get items that are still the best, even after 6 years. Which kind of goes hand in hand with the stagnated level cap.

Can we all agree that if this new game is a success and a lot of us switch to it, we don't make a website where we can all come and talk? You know, to save us the pain?
