PS FF8 Review

how come no one bitched like this when the game first came out? cuz it was great. for it's time, the graphics were good and the storyline was good. a wide amount of people never played ff1-6. you get lil boys and girls that just got first hair on ball play ps3 and xbox, but then give the old game a bad wrap cuz they think they compare it to everything that came AFTER the classics. i know some people do this for fun (game informer & ff7), but you can tell the differance between a good debate and someone crying for attention.

the 2 videos i watched made me accually wanna play ff8 over again, cuz i respect the story and the battle system.

i love how he goes on and on about squall being emo but he is the kid behind the camera bitching and crying for attention with a controller thats not even plugged in.
I guess I was ahead of the curve, because I was bitching about it while it was still fresh. It's the only RPG I've never beaten because I just couldn't stand playing it anymore.

What a schmuck. "I hate the draw system! Whaaaaaaaaaaaaa!"

A) No rule says you have to max out your spell draws on the first mob you encounter. "Holy shit, I'll never encounter another buzzing fly."

B) Using the cursor memory would've kept him from having to scroll down to the Draw option every time. You really can do that on auto-pilot.

Meh. Doesn't matter. It's still my favorite of the PS1 games. I'll take it over FF7 any day.
There's nothing forcing you to max out your draw as soon as the option becomes available, but it's stupid not to. When the amount of each magic you had effected your stat growth, casting spells became a liability. I could cast fire and really hurt all of the enemies, but then I wouldn't get as many stat points when I level up.

The draw system was a massive failure, that's why nothing has used it since.

FF7 was nothing special, but it was a better game(not graphics-wise though) than FF8.

Since this thread is nothing but trolling, FF7 sucks while 8 was marginally better. 10 was my least favorite of all, but not by much. I'll take a Working Designs game over Square/squareenix any day of the week.

I agree. I almost always maxed out my draws as soon as I encountered a spell. My point is that if it's causing the guy to gnaw his arms off in boredom when he has to do it, he could break it up into smaller sessions.

The problem with people jumping all over is that they don't know how to respect other people's opinions. You don't like the game, thats nice. We've all heard you say it about 50 times before. When you start throwing around phrases like "its stupid to not do this" etc, you're just projecting your opinions on everyone else.

Everyone has their own style of play and different things they enjoy. Is this really such a hard concept to grasp?

oh lol! I wasn't insulting the games themselves, just the leads.

The entire series itself is to date, imo, the greatest end all of all RPGs. I've beaten and wrapped all of them aside from 3,5, and 6. And X-2... But it doesnt count. And the random spin off games don't either.

I so far have rewrapped 7,8, and 9, and 10 isnt all that old in comparison, 11... hehe, 12 very new.

The oldschool games were all amazing, even before 3 graphics SE still managed to trump all the other companies with their unrivaled pixal art. Opening to ff...1 is it? the numbers between jap/eng versions always screw me up... the oneshowing the scene of the taking off airship, lord the awe of it...

FF7 I loved for it's down to earth plot and incredible music score. To date I feel one winged angel is uemetsu's best piece.

FF8 was a bit sullen, but I enjoyed the battle system when they tossed in the concept of minigames to enhance your limits, and adding in the concept of crits from hits, takign out the lul between commands.

FF9 seemed to be the polar oppisite of FF8, with a much more magic focus than futuristic, less sullen and more comical, with a main character you couldn't help but enjoy.

FF10 was beautiful. SE took the then next gen graphics to the limit right off the bat.

FF11... well... so far the most addicting of the series... ^_^;

FF12 I enjoyed for it's wide expanse of seemingly neverending side quests. And I <3 my side quests. Even after rackign up 120 hours on the game I was only at 90%. You can't say you have beaten that game til you have the tournesoul.

The games all had their pros and cons, and we'll all like one game over another depending on what our play style is.

People that love side quests will fall for 12. Like your musical scores? 7! Prefer deep character develpmont and thick plot? 8. Enjoy charasmatic leads? 9.

It boils down to personal opinion, not fact.

LOL at deep character development.

Only if you think "we all grew up together but the GFs made us forget about it, even though GFs haven't affected the memory of anyone else on the planet, ever, and nobody knew about this minor detail about GF usage before we figured it out" is deep character development.

Personally, it made me alt F4 out of that sequence and put the game away for a few weeks before forcing myself to beat it. The second time I played through it I did something entirely unrelated while tapping X repeatedly until it stopped.

edit: yes, my first playthrough was on the PC version, hence alt-f4 did work

man, this thread is funny with so many funny responses :P yay for boredom's results!

I really don't dislike any of the FF games, but I do like to poke fun at FF8 from time to time. The game had a mind blowing intro for when it was released, the music was pretty epic especially the intro ( liberti fatali ).

Though the only way I can put it after playing it is..

You hired a cowboy to assassinate a witch that was your nanny, but you forgot from using summoning magic, you want to screw your almost could have been sister, Your teacher is hitting on you, and the moon is made of monsters.. No wonder the kid changed his name in kingdom hearts. :shok:

Can't lie though, I do miss the old days of gaming. Bad game or not. XD

I loved FF8. Well, tetra master at least. Most of my game time went into that. I didn't even play FFXI for like 2 weeks after I bought it because I just played tetra master, lol.

Tetra Master is FF9

Triple Triad is FF8

I'm just going to throw out there 9 was my favourite and probably always will be. I can't see 13 trumping it. 7 is probably #2 though.

Let's all make lists of how we rank FF games, because it's a nice waste of a few minutes.

I put FFV at the top, just because I love what they did with the job system in that game. The story isn't exactly one of the strongest in the series, but I feel that the stellar gameplay makes up for it.
Following that is IX. My second entry in the series, it was whimsical and never really took itself too seriously until towards the end. I also like how they handled learning skills in this game, although it at times made it hard to catch up (Prime example: Steiner, although it was remedied when you reached the never ending Alexandria soldiers).
At third: VI. Absolute gold, you aren't a Final Fantasy fan if you haven't completed this one. From being bamboozled out of your big victory, to what I think was one of the best ways of handling magic learning in the series, this game was fantastic.
Next up: IV. The first in the three definite high points in the series, although the fact that everything was pretty much managed for you (learning spells, characters/jobs coming and going) made it kind of a downer. Still one of the best entries, though.
I've put I at number 5, specifically the Advance/PSP remakes. I've never tried the NES or the PS1 port, but they're rather dated as it is. I'd expect nothing flashy from the first entry in the series, and what this game did it did well.
Sixth and seventh are interchangable with XI and XII. I've recently started up XII again and found myself getting into the game more than I had initially. The highest point being that it doesn't force any sort of love story on you as practically every game since IV (excluding V) has done. XI, well... I still play it. There's so many cool things about it, even if it isn't one of the best entries in the series.
Eighth would be X. Looking back, it felt amazing during the first playthrough, but subsequent times you can tell how dated it looks and plays.
Doubly goes for VII, at nine. Great for its time, and it still does some things right. But the game itself has aged horribly, and could stand for a remake.
Tenth is III, specifically the DS remake. I'd played V first, and honestly this game just didn't do it for me. The horrific grindfest at the end didn't help much, either.
Lastly I've put II. I've beaten it, but I never was really into the story the whole way. I was genuinely shocked when I learned I was in the last dungeon.

I've excluded VIII, only because I've yet to even touch it.

You forgot tactics xali wtf! :(

I'm only working off the main series, GP :v

I'd go

VII/VI (I can't decide between the two tbh) -> IX -> VI -> X -> Tactics -> V -> VIII -> II -> I -> XII -> X-2 -> Mystic Quest lawl

I think that'd be my order :P and I haven't played 3 yet so I don't know where to put it

Oh yeah.
I'd probably rank X-2 right above X. Say what you will about the story, but the battle system was a fun take on ATB.

The ONLY good quality of X-2 was the battle system XD I'm sorry, but when everything else fails in an RPG (story, characters, music) than it has to be way low on my list :P

Tetra Master is FF9

Triple Triad is FF8

There's a difference? o.o;

...SPEAKING OF WHICH...

Does anyone here even play TM anymore? When I see the choice between ffxi and TM I always wondered if there were going to be more games added to the list D:

It's like the entire page between login and ffxi doesn't have a purpose anymore but to get downloads no one uses, and info no one cares about.

Remember the tribune! :D Damn I wish they'd bring it back. I'd so join. Walking around with a paintbrush beside your name would rock!

1. IX - Soundtrack was amazing top to bottom, decent graphics even today, and a FUN game.

2. IV - Turned me onto great soundtracks, deep story, and frankly RPG all together.

3. VI - Long, but advanced depth and gameplay over the previous US entry.

4. X - Polished graphics are pretty. Also liked the Jechts industrial metal theme, but 30 turns for every 1 turn? Jerk.

5. VIII - Could put you to sleep and the soundtrack wasn't great. But the FMVs were hypnotic.

I never played the Japanese games, such as V and III. Also never cared about RPG as a child and ignored I and II. Never had any interest in playing X-2, and never cared to try XII. But if you think thats ignorant..

I HATE VII. It's boring, the graphics and soundtrack absolutely suck, and Cloud and Sephiroth are completely and totally overrated. I never got further then Aeris getting killed. I never will. IT. IS. BORING. I say that playing VIII all the way through. F-7.
