FFXIV Character Creation Features revealed

Knowing SE, and from what I've seen of the character creation process, it looks pretty much the same as the one from WAR. That is, a variety of possible faces, a variety of possible hairstyles, a variety of possible "accessories", choose and color as you like, and a range of body types that has some variation, but on the whole doesn't allow you to diverge much from what is considered "normal".

The only problem I see with extensive character creation processes are things like sliders on body size. If there's not a limit on it, people will make ridiculously small characters or large ones that just look fucking retarded (Aion), and I really don't want that in XIV. Yes it allows for diversity, but there should be a line drawn so people don't just go crazy overboard. I'd rather them limit some of the character design features like size and width, chest size (Aion again, made this over the top). Call me gay if you really want to, but I'd rather there be some amount of realism put into the thought of armor design for female characters. Not just have 90% of the sets of armor they wear look like something a stripper would, barely covering any flesh - when clearly that wouldn't protect the wearer from a god damn thing. (Aion again)

Thankfully I see SE going the route they did with FFXI for these things; although I do hope they allow for more diversity during the character creation process on the smaller things like scars, hair, and other facial features. Diversity is a good thing, but only up to an extent.. no chibi midget characters with gigantic heads and downs faces please.

Oh hell yeah and if they let you pick any skin color/hair color, I see a lot of Galka's being the hulk. So limits, yes prz.

I also would prefer to see limits on the customization. Yes, it would be nice to have more distinct faces, but I really dont' want to run around with human midgets and "hulks" as JP pointed out. I'd like the sense of normalcy that FFXI has with the characters. More unique characters please, but not outlandish and unrealistic. Like H cup boobs.

Yeh me and Justin were speaking about this also, I can see having a bunch of tiny fucking humans running around already. /le sigh
Hobbits, or Dwarfs lol

I recall spending ages mulling over the look of my character in Oblivion, now that was a detailed creation mode hope FF's is as indepth also.

We're talking about the Japanese here. Big boobs to them is like C cup.

Speaking of mulling, I hope we have a lot more inventory space so I don't need to mule all the goddamn time.

I´d prefer it that way, imo. It is funny seeing midget CASTs running around in PSOBB, but at the same time it kinda lessens the experience.
I´m fine with the shortest races being Lalafell.

Battle scars on a woman? =(

And yeah definitely long hair, probably not past the shoulders though. I'll be using a male char, I'd rather not be hit on by the internet horn squad.

Nothing wrong with a few small battle scars on a woman. If I play this game I'll probably play a class different from my whm mithra so a few scars would really add to her look.

I hope that they do but knowing SE there will still be some crazy women armor. In Guild Wars I refuse to get one of the elite armor versions for my ranger because it's basically a bikini with twigs around it. It's okay if armor is a little sexy but come on cover the tender bits.

Win. One of my favorite things about Guild Wars is its attention to some realism in most of their armor (Elite Druid's Armor for female Rangers notwithstanding). If armor is named "Gladiator", you expect it to cover less than something called "Templar" or "Fur-Lined". Casters (females especially) wear less, but they're still robe-oriented, rather than looking like a buffed-up wizard in armor.

No matter how long you worked on your characters face in oblivion, it never looked any better lol. But considering the graphics I've seen from 14, I'm sure it will look alot better.

"inevitable comparison to Aion's character creator"
Oh wait, someone already did that.

I'm not just comparing it to Aion. lol.. Seriously, I've played free mmo's with better or similar customization options to what FFIV will have. Then you have most P2P mmo's that usually have a lot of customization options and that's just as a standard nowadays.

And to answer someone else, yes it does tend to effect the way you look even with armor on. If you create a small character then naturally you're armor and weapons are going to appear smaller and opposite if you make a larger character. Plus we all know that from playing FFXI, there's times when we switch into different casual wear for the fun of it. Even if it's just to see what it looks like on our characters. So it's not as if we're always behind a wall of armor all of the time.

In short, your character's body type can still be seen whether you're wearing armor or not. Now, perhaps scars and whatnot wont be seen as easily with armor on but all those options are there so you don't have 50+ clones of yourself running around in the same area like you would back on FFXI.

I actually didn't mind that so much because I never seen a character who looks exactly like me. Yeah, same face and rarely the same height but since I had different armor, it didn't bug me. Like I said, I'd prefer looking alike than having no limitations on body types, skin/eye/hair colors, and scars. Because I'm not up to seeing smurfs, hulks, and carrot tops running around.

I will agree that there should be a limit on things like height. But these things are only dependent upon the world you make you character in. I seriously doubt that FFXIV will allow people to make ultra tiny characters or ones that are too ultra hulkish (with exception to the Galka-like race).

But at the same time, there will be small children npc's much like in FFXI. So I don't see anything wrong with making a character of that size. I am pretty sure that FFXIV will have size limitations and I doubt there will be any way to go overboard with the creation process.

In games like Aion, there are npc's that are dwarf size. There are also large size npc's. There are no npc's with huge heads though.. so call that a fluke of the creation process. Personally I don't understand people that want to make such a stupid looking character. But to each his own I guess.

*Fixed. :P

FFXIV btw!

It's mainly kids that do it because they think it looks cool (unlike a lot of people, I have no issue with kids playing the game since it's kinda made for them) or adults that do it because they think it looks funny.

Made for kids? I really don't think any of the FF games are made for kids, I doubt they understand half of whats going on. Maybe like, crystal chronicles.. And more adults play games than kids. They can have WoW, I want FFXIV to attract the more mature players.

Thankfully I already know they will be incorporating subligars again. I don't know what I'd do without them. <3

By kids, I don't mean 7 year olds. I'm talking about 14+ish. I've been playing FFXI since I was 14 actually (5 years) and I beat FFX before FFXI was released on PS2. So I was probably like 12 or 13 when I finished it and I understood it just fine.

Even if you get all adults, you still get a lot of idiots. The thing I noticed between kids that play FFXI and adults that play FFXI, is that if they are a stupid kid, usually they just don't know what to do and will actually listen if you explain it well enough. But if it's a stupid adult, a lot of the time they think they know everything or they are just an asshole.

I would think more kids play games than adults lol. A lot of 18+ people I know don't bother with games all that much. Adults may play MMOs than kids, but games in general, I'm not so sure. I want a more mature crowd for FFXIV, but I was always iffy when people said that kids didn't need to play FFXI. And by kids, they pretty much meant anyone under 18 because most of the people they talk about are like 16.

Actually, a lot of adults 20-35 play games. Its the generation that grew up with games, and as such still play them as adults.

In about 20 years I'd say a great majority of gamers are 20+

A lot of older adults nowadays find video games childish, but once that generation slowly start to die out and the 80's start taking over, video games will be more common and acceptable, and as such be more widespread in the population and age groups. Video games are no different from watching a movie or playing board games, but those are older phenomenons, something most everyone alive today has grown up with, and is as such more acceptable. As video games are a new phenomenon, its not as wide-spread. But it will be.

Right now video games are the largest growing market in the world.
