Final Fantasy XIV

Pretty weird that they'll be featuring it outside of Japan.
By "bringing" does that mean "playable"? Or will it just be the trailer we saw?

I'm guessing Alpha footage, beta would be around FFXIII for around 6 months ish, so I'd estimate.

FFXIII: May/June release (US/EU)
FFXIV Beta (6 Months): May-October/June-November.
FFXIV Full Release: November/December Worldwide.

Pony Friends 2?

Theres a game called Pony Friends? And why is there a 2nd one of these...

Probably from Ubisoft.

The Sept.09 Issue of Famitsu Wave features an interview with the Director of Final Fantasy XIV, Nobuaki Komoto. Below are a few highlights:

The World
+ Eorza is actually a region of the world where FFXIV takes place, and as a whole, is smaller than Vana'diel. The world featured in FFXIV is actually named Haiderin.
+ Aiming for a more 'high-fantasy' feel. More stylized, more modernized than FFXI.

The Growth
+ FFXIV features no EXP or LVL System. Focuses more on Job growth, in a system similar to Final Fantasy Tactics.
+ In addition to Jobs, growth focuses heavily on weaponry, changing the way you play and grow as a character.

The Player
+ Will be adaptable for single-player or group environments. Players will always have something to do.
+ Considering Large Scale battles, but focus it to tailor the game to the player (Solo = Single enemy, Group = Multiple enemies)
+ A Beta phase is planned for the game, and is expected to last longer than the initial four month beta held before FFXI's launch.

Lastly, Komoto mentioned there is a secret message in the game's initial E3 trailer. What is it?

No one knows...yet~

So, seems like we have an enhanced FFII/FF Tactics system.

uhhhh... That system is no different than XI. You level the jobs not the character. Sure some people level only one job, but you still aren't leveling the character like you do in WoW.

Also with current FF trends expect a 5 year delay on xiv. I mean XIII has been in development for a few years now. Trailers have been flashed since 2007.

Have you played Final Fantasy tactics? It is quite a bit different than FFXI.

Also, how is no exp or levels not any different from FFXI? What you're saying is basically that all games are the same, because you play as characters.

I doubt it. MMOs dont seem subject to the FF delays.

Final Fantasy Tictacs had a system where you basically earned experience during battle, but instead of leveling up a static number you'd spend those points on learning skills and abilities for your job.
Sure, your character's stats would be determined by a Level, but their abilities on the various jobs they can use were built the way you wanted.

I am with Romper here. FFXI allready has a system very similar to FFTactics. Its pretty much a mirror image man... Where is the difference lol.

Actually, I'd be more inclined to compare it to FFV before FFT.
The only similarities between FFXI and FFT were that you could change classes. JESUS CHRIST IT'S LIKE LOOKING AT TWO CLONES.

According to the designers, there will be NO Level system or EXP. FFII had no level system or EXP either, Instead it relied on the growth of individual skills, much like what the designers have been aiming for in FFXIV. So technically I'm correct, it is going to be an enhanced FFII system. SE never really does the same thing twice when it comes to the main FF games' battle systems or levelling systems, unless they overhaul and enhance it greatly and add something a little extra to give it it's own unique flavour.

I'm sure there will be some sort of grind involved, what MMO DOESNT have a grind? Althought your weapons determining the path you end up taking does sound interesting.

"There is no EXP or Level system. There's now a system where you accumulate points in battle that go toward your progress for making your character stronger." - Smug moronic Final Fantasy XIV developer who doesn't realize it's the same thing.

Somebody translate this deviation of the Romantic language!
Also, the new names sound pretty retarded, but that's coming from someone who's used to calling them "Tarutaru" and not "Lalafell".
"Hyruan" though... I thought SE decided to refer to all human-like creatures as "Humes" in their games after I spotted the term in FFXII/A2.

Not quite.

For us old-school pen & paper RP types, it's the difference between level-based systems (D&D, for example, which is also the system that most computer RPGs use) and skill-based systems (Cyberpunk, for example).

In a skill-based system, there are no levels. No arbitrary "hey, I just got better at everything I do" moments. Points are accrued on a smaller scale and invested as the player desires. Individual skills are increased one at a time.

Most systems these days adopt measures of both. Points or skills are awarded arbitrarily as levels increase, and some of those points are discretionary. Those are, however, still level-based systems.

I have my doubts as to how effective that can really be in a computer RPG, really. I suppose we'll see. I expect that there will be difficulties in presenting a system that is reasonably balanced, sufficiently discretionary, and still entertaining to work with.

In theory, the primary difference between FFXIV and FFXI will be that in FFXI, one can assume a certain level of commonality between two characters with the same job setup, with gear defining the majority of role variation (discounting shifts from merit points). If FFXIV is a purely skill-based system, things could well be completely different. Two characters with arguably the same "job" could have completely different skill sets.

A major balancing issue, in that event, would be creating a sufficient level of variation in each job without making the jobs entirely similar, while avoiding the trap of creating what is, in fact, only a single viable path for each job.

Part of the problem I had with WAR before I quit was that while each class had three upgrade paths, with a theoretical wide variety of possible configurations, there were typically only 1 or 2 that were truly viable for each class. Lots of functionally useless, or extremely specialized abilities.

for those talking about FFT, there was a level system. Characters leveled up, as well as jobs. Character levels were with EXP, and jobs leveled up with JP.

To me it sounds like FFXIV is using the FFTA leveling method, not the FFT method. In FFTA you gain abilities/skills for each job by equipping gear for X number of fights. Afterwards, you can take the equipment off and still know the ability (only for the jobs that can use that ability). So it sounds like you have to find the gear that you can use to learn what you want to learn. But it's probably a bit less straightforward since it's an mmo. Probably uses some kind of restriction so you cannot just equip the bestestest gear right away for a job (like you can't learn X skill until you know Y and Z).

Not quite.

The point I was making was that replacing a points based advancement system with another points based advancement system isn't doing anything different, regardless of fixed level up increases and rewards or player chosen increases and rewards. You're still going to go out, party or solo, fighting monsters or completing quests for points with the intention of strengthening your character from collecting enough of them.

Another problem that arises is that there'll still be levels, even if they aren't called them anymore. EverQuest had Alternate Advancement(Think Merit Points, but much more options.) Even if you were max level, players still differentiated between all the level 60/70/75/80/whatever the cap in EQ is now by listing off how many AA points they've spent. Another problem yet, is once people toy around with it, there might as well still be fixed increases because people are going to figure out the optimal choices to grab to get the best performance or demand every player of X Class have said choices, disregarding customization for minmaxing*. Choice is ultimately only an illusion in these types of circumstances.

*edit: look at that fukken run on sentence.
