Final Fantasy XIV

I heard WoW was the first MMO ever, is that true? (Obligatory Wheelchair post, Zikel server will get it lol)

Not only Zikel server, I think all servers have their share of WoW retards. A few days ago I saw something similar to "Lol, this game even has ranged attackers like WoW... GG" That's like, wtf? have you even PLAYED a game before? I'm assuming he ment it closer to "Wow, Ranger's really similar to Hunter", except for the pet and all the attacks, including Hide, but YEAH, really close...

retard, it's still 50+ bucks for the game + 12+ bucks for the month, 62+ bucks for the first month to find out I don't wanna play it? Stupid stupid stuff. WoW you can download and play for free for 14 days when you create your account, don't be an asshole >.> and an ignorant one at that.

And yes I know most MMOs the first month is free but YOU STILL HAVE TO BUY THE GOD DAMN GAME, again, WoW's the only one I can think of where AFTER release you could download the game for free and play up to level 20 (iirc) and had 14 weeks to try out all you could, it's a GOOD idea. RMT can be delt with in other ways.

What you fail to realize is WoW didn't start out doing this. It was something Blizzard tossed in later after WoW had become a success for them. There are other MMO's that do this and have done this. Star Wars Galaxies has done it, FFXI has done this, and City of Heroes still does it and I'm sure there are others that do this and have done this already. Once again WoW isn't really doing anything different or ground breaking. WoW has established players and the simple fact is right now it is the biggest MMO in the world. Though I do hope that this changes in the near future.

WoW didn't always have the 14 day thing, though. It's a relatively new concept in the world of MMOs.
And, like I said earlier, RMT tend to abuse the 14 day trial, which forces the company to make tweaks to the trial like making it so you can message anyone unless they message you first. But I doubt that stops them from going into a town and starting to shout ads.

I can't recall one that did it before WoW so if you know one, enlighten me. True it was a success after they added it but the 14 day trial thing wasn't added THAT long after WoW and I bet you it is something that helped their sales quite a bit.

True it's susceptible but it is a good idea and you can tweak it to deal with the RMT, they have been working about that. And ya, they made it so you can't shout in any form when on trial. Eventually it'll be harder and harder, so while susceptible to RMT crap it's not a huge thing, I'll bet it's brought them a lot of customers in.

Alchemist has also been revealed as one of the classes in the Disciples of Hand, as well as Culinarian :p

Wonder if Alchemist will be able to replace a White Mage, assuming they can create temp-potions to throw at their party members... And wonder if Culinarians will be able to play the role of a semi-bard by "feeding" their members thus providing them with various stat boosts. Perhaps in that way Blacksmiths could sort of "improve" party members weapons and make them do more damage, as well as temporarily "enchant" them to give them a certain ailment, thus boosting damage further, while Weavers could enchant party member's armors and thus provide them with various stat boosts, such as a small Auto Regen or small Auto Refresh? As such, perhaps a tanner could place "traps" to enfeeble an enemy, while a woodworker could supply an archer with unlimited arrows?

Perhaps there won't be a "bard" job, but instead the disciples of hand and land act as buff jobs by enhancing various aspects, as mentioned above. That would certainly make them somewhat useful in parties. With a heavily melee-based party you might favor a Blacksmith over a Weaver, for example.

To explain a bit better what I mean;

Weaver - Weaves enchants on armor.
Blacksmith - Strengthens weapon. "Forges" them.
Culinary - Stat boosts through gourmet food
Tanner - Enfeebles enemies through traps.
Alchemist - Healing through potions.

No idea what Botanist etc. would do though...

Wouldn't it be awesome if, say, high-level weavers and blacksmiths could permanently give armor and weapons a minor enhancement?

I honestly like where youre going with this. Hope this is what SE has in mind maybe =D

The question, though, is how much can you limit the trial to combat RMT without putting off potential subscribers? I think removing shout is pretty stupid, but RMT do abuse it.

I have an itch that needs scratching. I need in this now. I played FFXI and I was a WHM, this time I'm feeling the Archer or the Lancer.

Again I'll say, they haven't always done this. They have not done this for longer than they have been doing it. It is because they no longer -need- and simply -want-. For any other game to do this they'd need a hefty player base or just be sinking. An MMO on the fringe or of the just enough status would be stupid to do a demo after release. Why? It could make one less person buy the game. The con of doin' it this way is people like you wont buy the game. However, if they make it -seem- more appealing you might give in where as the one who played the demo knows its shit, in their opinion, and wont think of it again.

I wish every game that came out, MMO or not, had a demo. However, I understand why they do not and it's just smart business. Hating on smart business is rather silly but not liking the situation is okay. Understand where they are coming from.

I never thought of this. Every company probably wants to avoid the whole "I'll just rent it" appeal and a demo may take the place of just that.

I always wondered why there wasn't more demo's.

SW:Galaxies was out almost a year and a half before WoW. I know they had free trial cds and I'm fairly sure they had them before WoW put theirs out. And I'm fairly sure WoW didn't have free trial until some time later 1-2 years if not 2-3 after their launch. I can't find any exact dates for solid evidence online atm. But why would you start handing out 14 day free trials when you're game is still very successful and not lacking players because you have it open to nearly all of the world to play?

I am fairly certain I saw other game's "free trial" discs before I saw one for WoW. They were kind of forced to give people free trials to compete with Blizzard who was dominating the market. The only game I can say with certainty is SW: Galaxies because I remember seeing the disc's at the stores I would frequent and there were no WoW free trials.

I need to pick me up a WoW free trial now that I think about it, would make a decent coaster.

I never cared for Star Wars in general, so I don't know about that, but WoW did have free trials within the first few months or so at least (maybe half a year at most) cause that's when I first tried it iirc and it was cause of the demo :P I've seen plenty of single player games with demo discs but not MMOs prior to WoW. I wonder if there's a place with the information of this minor crap (even wiki doesn't, hehe)

Not caring for something isn't an excuse for ignorance :|

If you're gonna claim that WoW was the first to offer free trials, at least do the (menial at best) research to back the claim.

Or, you know, they could just do what they do in FFXI.
Only that won't work, as SE stated theywould, youknow, be actual classes. A class which only craft won't work in battle, and they stated they would have a role in battle.

Really, what would they do if they did it "just like in FFXI"? Would they go "OH NO, A MONSTER. I BETTER CRAFT A BED IN CASE SOMEONE FAINTS!"

I don't know about you, but I'd rather fall on to a bed than on to the hard ground. Anyway..

Even Disciples of the Hand or Land can have fully developed careers without ever setting foot into battle.

As for botanists, they'll probably do something along the lines of harvesting plant material.

Wonder if Alchemist will be able to replace a White Mage

Seeing as we'll have disciples of magic, I doubt this.
Alchemist - Healing through potions.

They can kind of already do this, given the skill and the proper materials. FFXIV will have both Disciples of the Hand (crafters) and Disciples of the Land (gatherers), so the crafters will likely need materials from the gatherers to make stuff. I'd assume weavers would make cloth armor, blacksmiths would make (and, as SE has hinted at, repair) metal armor & weapons, culinaries would make food, tanners would make leather armor, and alchemists would make medicines... without participating in battle.

You know, kind of like what they do in FFXI.

I said "first, to my knowledge" reading comprehension is good D: well technically I said "WoW was the first I can think of" same difference. God you people need to get over bashing me for whatever reason and READ.

No shit, but what would their battle role be?

Seeing as we'll have disciples of magic, I doubt this.
Only, SE claimed there won't be a White Mage job. There will likely be a job (or several) with healing skills, but it won't be the only skills it have.

Again, SE stated that even Hand and Land classes would have a role in battle... And I doubt it is exclusive to repairing.

And that, unless SE has dramatically changed for FFXI works in the past 1-2 months, is not how crafting skills in FFXI work.

To be fair to everyone talking about your statements, you return to argue your "fact" on multiple occasions as if you did research and showed evidence. Then you ignore it when someone states a fact arguing against your thoughts and parrot yourself again.

MMOs have always had friend passes where someone who buys the game can give codes to a few friends and use their discs to install it and they get a free month. Many started coming out with cheap trials, FFXI for example gave the core game with not even RotZ with a month of service for 2.99 at GameStop. It's only with the rise of broadband in the past few years that companies allowed download-able trials.

you guys are funny, why not just wait and see what the game holds. Meh I guess speculation is fun but stop arguing about demo discs lmao.
