Final Fantasy XIV

I don't know about you, but I'd rather fall on to a bed than on to the hard ground. Anyway..

As for botanists, they'll probably do something along the lines of harvesting plant material.

Seeing as we'll have disciples of magic, I doubt this.

They can kind of already do this, given the skill and the proper materials. FFXIV will have both Disciples of the Hand (crafters) and Disciples of the Land (gatherers), so the crafters will likely need materials from the gatherers to make stuff. I'd assume weavers would make cloth armor, blacksmiths would make (and, as SE has hinted at, repair) metal armor & weapons, culinaries would make food, tanners would make leather armor, and alchemists would make medicines... without participating in battle.

You know, kind of like what they do in FFXI.

To reiterate what Uzor is sayin, each one needs to have its role on the battlefield. Of course, a crafter cant venture out on his/her own to fight difficult mobs to gather mats and such, but maybe its role in the party will be different than when he/she is out soloing stuff. As Uzor said, maybe the blacksmith can enchant armors or weapons, the alchemist make potions to heal or items to enfeeble mobs, etc etc. Maybe the crafters party roles take better shape during extended hours of play when deep within a dungeon or something. I mean hell, wouldnt it put a huge damper on your play time if your best sword breaks and needs repairing? Sure you could change to blacksmith (if you have it) and fix the sword yourself, but what if you are under siege by mobs? Wouldnt it be better for a few disciples of war to hold off the mobs while a blacksmith or two fix weapons and armor? My feeling is thats where theyre goin with this, sorta.....

You gotta remember this is FFXIV, not FFXI, so things will/should be significantly different.

I never cared for Star Wars in general, so I don't know about that, but WoW did have free trials within the first few months or so at least (maybe half a year at most) cause that's when I first tried it iirc and it was cause of the demo :P I've seen plenty of single player games with demo discs but not MMOs prior to WoW. I wonder if there's a place with the information of this minor crap (even wiki doesn't, hehe)

A full 2 years after the original release of the game. What you like tried as the "free trial" version was a buddy key.

Also, here's a quote for Crafting jobs;

One of the fundamental things that will connect battle-oriented classes and crafting classes is the addition of weapon deterioration. Characters will need to regularly seek the aid of a crafter, such as a blacksmith, in order to keep their weapons in prime shape. Besides weapons, shields and armor will also have durabilities that deteriorate. The current states of a piece of equipment will also affect its market price. Whether or not these change will be reflected graphically or not is still something that is being considered.
The idea is that there will be some gathering place, similar to Aetheryte for Guildleve, where players can go to meet up with a Blacksmith and get some repair work done. Search Comments, which were a popular way to advertise buying/selling will also be making their way in to FFXIV. Komoto also realizes that their may be times when a Blacksmith is not available, and he is thinking of how to address this. "It's not like you'll have to wander around with a broken weapon forever," Komoto jokes.
However, do not expect a crafter to magically fix your equipment on the first try. A crafter's skill will play into whether they can successfully repair a piece of equipment. Luckily, Tanaka adds that even if a crafter fails at a repair attempt, they will not lose the weapon or armor being worked on.
Crafters will have other unique abilities, such as being able to add their own colors or patterns to the equipment they make. It is also possible that shop signs will be made available to long-time players, although Komoto says they are still considering different options. As for battle, it appears that crafting classes may have some abilities that could be utilized for light battles, but have little strength when compared to a battle-oriented job.
Granted, they say "may", but I do not think they would reveal that unless they are truly giving them abilities that can be of benefit in battles.

"It appears" being the operative word in that sentence.

That is a write-up interview with Tanaka, though, so "it appears" is him avoiding giving a direct answer... It isn't a theory based on GamesCon videos and what's on the FFXIV website.

Edit: Additionally, there is one somewhat interesting note in the new issue of Famitsu:

Another aspect of crafting will be repairing weapons. As a weapon is used, it will deteriorate, and the abilities of that weapon will gradually decrease as well. Certain crafters will be called upon to repair these items. However, crafters themselves must be careful, because even their tools are subject to wear and tear. As a final note, the developers note that there may be tools specific to different races. However, they do not wish to separate the races too much, so any differences will not have a prohibitive affect on game play.
So not only can a weapon break (as we knew before), it seem damage from abilities (and auto-attacks?) gradually decrease based on the quality of the weapon. Wonder if Armor work the same way, and Defense gradually decreases with the quality of it...

It would be awesome though if they added animations to it. In the new video the Hume male has a scar, and his armor is scratched. Wonder if a low-quality armor has added visual effects such as scratches and broken pieces, and a character at low-health will have a number of scars and wounds? Would be awesome xD

That was not a demo in the sense you are trying to defend. Someone had to pay a client fee to get you that trial opportunity.

I don't recall if my friend was the one that gave me that trial opportunity though seems it prolly was. Regardless, the 14 day trial thing they implemented eventually is one I think every MMO should come with from the start :P those that don't I just kinda determine "prolly think they're too crappy and they know it so they wanna con people in" so I don't bother. And yes all MMOs come with first month free but you have to still buy it and that's a waste of money imo if I find out it sucks in the first month.

I don't always get into the betas cause I don't learn about the games in time or I'm too busy in real life to get into them so when they come out and I finally have some time to try it, I'd have to pay for it, so meh to that. Just my point, and then people started jumping down my throat being assholes so meh >.>

Jesus christ, enough about free trials.

Jesus christ, enough about free trials.

Thank you.

Lets get back to business, I picked this up off the Eorzapedia site and another forum:

Going between two languages, it is easy for things to get lost in translation. Not only that, but for Final Fantasy XIV, the sites for each region are also presented in entirely different ways. That means sometimes there can be pictures or text in one that doesn’t show up in the either.

At the moment, we have extensive text on the NA site about some of the monster families like Aldgoats and Antelopes. However, the Japanese site does not contain any additional text, just the pictures that were released to the Japanese media. For those in Japan, they have to get their information from the magazines released this weekend or one of the several gaming news websites like GAME Watch or 4Gamer.
Let’s check out what was in the magazines that isn’t on the NA site as well as what things may have been lost along the way.

WEEKLY FAMITSU
FFXIV is down in the Weekly Famitsu ratings, from 12 to 21. It seems to follow a pattern though. The week or two after new info it rises, but after a lull it falls back down. That’s to be expected at this stage in the game.
In this issue, there are seven pages dedicated to the new information released by SE as well as some short Q&As as well. Let’s start with the Q&As first. For the most part, I will only cover things that haven’t already been discussed in other articles.
World Overview

There will be a tavern-like places in the game similar to what we saw in the Tokyo Game Show trailer. These places will be an important part of the game. Also in previous trailers as well as the TGS trailer, there have been scenes of a group of adventurers taking on a large number of enemies. SE says that this kind of giant battle will not be the norm but this will happen on occasion and is one of the new game play features for FFXIV. The GAME Watch interview also confirmed this but the music in the second half of the trailer is one of the many battle themes as well.
Weapons and Tools

Each weapon will vary in what the best attacking range for it will be. Some may be closer than others, or farther than others. One example is the polearm mentioned in the official text for Lancer. Confirmed in the Q&A as well, polearms allow you to attack outside of the melee attacking range of your opponent. They also confirm that Lancers will be able to use both the two-handed polearms and the throwing javelins. The javelins will be treated as throwing weapons rather than as the main weapon you walk around with. This was how throwing weapons worked in FFXI as well. They would like to add other throwing weapons to other classes as well.
The Q&A talks about the weapon degradation as well. As your weapon wears down, its functional ability will decrease, requiring you to get it repaired. Tools will also need to be repaired from time to time too.

There are some interesting responses to the Q&A about crafting. The interviewer asks if the ability to use a particular tool or use particular materials could be limited to a set race. The nameless respondent from SE replies this could happen. However, they will strive for balance so that no race is dominant over the others. They also ask what will be needed to craft things. You will need the proper tool or tools. Preparing good tools and proper armor will be key. You will also need the proper materials and a crystal. Many times you will need to choose the right equipment as well. We can see one example of that in the Lifestyle report on the Culinarian talking about how she could use the equipment at the Culinarian’s Guild. To craft some things, you might also need to meet certain additional requirements as well. They mention the possibility of needing assistance or having to wait for a particular type of weather or other natural phenomena.

Finally, eating food will have an effect on player’s stats. They don’t want your party to be affected too much by what you eat. Instead, they want to make it so that people are free to eat what they want and have the ability to eat lots of different things. It sounds like they are still in the planning stages for how food will work in game.
After you have crafted a lot of things, it’s only natural to sell them. In previous interviews, they said they were working on a new system different from the Auction House used in FFXI. SE has now given us a name for this new system, the Market. However, I’ll talk more about what we know about the Market later.
Famitsu Ideas

As part of the Japanese media kit, sites were given a story to go with the pictures that describe the crafting process from the point of view of a Culinarian. You can see examples on GAME Watch or Gpara. Weekly Famitsu decided to write their own speculation based on the story instead of running the original text. Here’s what they came away with:

The tool you use will have a large effect on your results. For example, the same ingredients prepared with the skillet or with the kitchen knife could result in different dishes. The amount could change as well.
Guilds will have equipment available to assist your crafting efforts. Sometimes it will be necessary to use them.
You need a crystal to craft.
After making a recipe once, it will appear in a personal recipe book.
There is a chance that the amount will increase. (This is similar to HQ’ing in FFXI for some recipes.)
There will be a way for crafters to set prices for something they want to sell.

DENGEKI PLAYSTATION
This week FFXIV comes in at 5th in Dengeki PlayStation’s Anticipated Titles poll. Last issue it made it all the way up to 3rd.
Dengeki PlayStation also ran the newly released information and pictures, however, they kept it to a short 4 pages. 1/3 of one of those pages was dedicated to their own speculations:

There will be multiple markets. Each market will have a different name.
They feel the stands will be player-run as well as named by players.
Food will spoil over time. Because of this, you will be able to check on the status of an item when you look at it. Another option would be to have a skill or ability that lets you check the status of items/armor/food/etc.
It will be fairly costly to use equipment at the various guilds.
The various aetheryte points will be named Camp ________. This is actually the second time we’ve seen “Camp _______” used at the aetheryte points.
The Miqo’te Kabobs will increase attack power.
Gil is the currency of Eorzea.

DIFFERENCES
miqotebob.png

The speculations we make are completely based on what we can read. In general, the Japanese versions are very straight-forward. The English versions are much more colorful. It makes for great reading in English but harder to tell what is important.
For starters, the picture of the kabobs. In the English version of the site, they are only referred to as “crispy kabobs”. However, they have an actual name in the Japanese version. ミコッテ風山の幸串焼 Literally translates as “Miqo’te style Mountain Foods Grilled on Sticks”. This is nearly identical to what is used in FFXI for Meat Mithkabobs, swapping Mithra for Miqo’te.

How about the names of places? In the English version, the market is named Glutton’s Alley and the stand is called The Scratching Post. In Japanese, they have がつがつ横丁 which can easily turn into Glutton’s Alley. However, the name of the stand is completely different. The Japanese “Totoya” doesn’t turn into anything specifically outside of “Fish Store”. In fact, there are some seafood restaurants named Totoya. However, the people at Dengeki PlayStation took it to mean that maybe the stand was run by a person named Toto (with the ya part meaning store). Thus, from their point of view, the stands could be named after the player or perhaps even freely named. In the English version, with “The Scratching Post”, it is clearly not a player’s name. However, it fits the player, a Miqo’te, that was selling their goods. The speculations we can make are very dependent on the version we are reading. The words “Market” and “Stand” are also highlighted in the Japanese version to make it clear these are important keywords to be remembered. The English version is much more casual about how they are used and requires people to read into things a bit more.
extrafoods.png

Finally, there are a few pictures not used on the NA site. These food items don’t have names yet but their shapes are very familiar to foods used in FFXI. Perhaps we will be seeing a lot of old favorites? Only time will tell.
That’s it for this week. See ya later!

That's sick. No more writing shit down into a binder or notebook.

Seriously, I want this game now. It has been such a long time since I got excited over a video game more then I should have and this one is it.

It makes me wonder though, with what we learned from the differently disciplines of hand and them being able to support in battle, will everyone still treat it like a crafting job?

I don't know yet, but from the sounds of it I'm going to focus on a discipline of war job and a discipline of hand job/craft as a back up depending on what magic and land are.

I can't wait for Final Fantasy XIV!!

Best game I've ever seen, been so hyped for this game like no other game.

This is what I'm hoping for that crafting classes will have some sort of practical use in battle, like what Uzor said. Just thinking of that makes me drool for it would add a whole new element to the game.

This is what I would want also. In FFXI, most people had a main job and a main craft... imagine if you can combine them into one.

I'm going to pick one displine of war job and a crafting job... hell maybe 1 of each. I don't know.

I want to be a Bow Mage.

Most MMO's do not have "free trials" until they're firmly established. Almost all have first month free, some have buddy trial keys, but no mainstream MMO has "download this and try before you buy."

They need money from disc sales early in the lifecycle to pay for development costs. Once the costs drop to upkeep, they often introduce free trials to bring in subscribers and increase the userbase.

For XIV, there will likely be an open beta for a few weeks, then first month free when you buy the box.

ya but most don't even open up free trials at all after they've released :\ even failed MMOs make money. At least most, or so I've read from various articles.

ffxi orny dont think i will play FF14 unless i can take my char over there.. work to hard just to quit

Yeah whats the point of going on to a new game/world if you can port your character over with all skills capped, relic armor, etc etc?

This is about starting fresh and new!
