Flameboard

No one forces you to click on it and go in there.
I know no one forces anyone to, that's kind of my point. No one forces you to look at the trainwreck twenty feet to your left, either. But you do, you can't help it.

For the record, I am perfectly comfortable with the way I use the FB currently and would subscribe to the user group if that is the course of action that was taken.

it would kill the flameboard, plain and simple. you might as well remove it, since most flames are against people not using the boards and they'd be rendered unable to reply unless informed how
That's probably true. What about the below idea?

I do think there are quite a few members who would rather not see it at all, so, even if its not a private forum, maybe a separate user group could be created for those members who don't want anything to do with it.

That's kind of the root of my point, that most users of the forum will simply think it was removed unless they read deep enough into the vast cobwebbed recesses of the service and support forums to know how to access it.

same with new users, too

I see what you mean about how some people might think it got deleted, because I know that when WoW got moved to Private Forum status, I didn't join (granted I stopped playing it, but that's besides the point). To my knowledge, the modmins didn't make a post about it (which I may very well be wrong about), so that might have attributed to the low population right now.

What if they moved the entire Flameboard, and all of the posts, to Private Forum status, but left the Flameboard section there, but with only a single post describing how to join the new one. Think of it kind of like a soft-move.

That's probably true. What about the below idea?

I thought about suggesting that, but I decided against it because it would require the modmins to take the time to move everyone who doesn't want to see it, to the new user group. The one I suggested would give more flexibility to the userbase (they can add/remove themselves as much as they want without having to bother the modmins to do it*), and it won't add, what could be, a ton of work for the modmins.

*I added this because of a situation that might occur that would be similar to Morceeba's. Let's say a user doesn't want to see the FB and so, doesn't join the FB forum (let's say it moved to Private Forum status). After they did, someone flames them. The user finds out and wants to defend themselves. If the user could add/remove themselves when ever they wanted, they could add and then defend themselves until a resolution was reached, then remove themselves. If the modmins had to switch a users account status, the process would take much longer, adding to their workload.

edit: not sure if that made much sense.

For the private groups in general there could be a thread with a graphic explanation of how to join the groups and lists the ones that aren't linkshell boards a with brief description.

Personally I don't care whether the Flameboard is public or private. I think it will thrive either way. I read it but I rarely post in it. I don't like the negative publicity it gives the site but like Reya said bad news sells better than good news.

That makes sense to me, Lucki. IMO, if people are serious about not wanting to see the FB, you need to stick to that. I understand people have a need to defend themselves, but if you don't want the drama, commit to that.

And, yeah, I don't want to create a bunch of unnecessary work for the site staff, either. I do think there is a large enough group who don't want anything to do with the FB for the issue to merit some attention and maybe a little work, though.

It would be the same amount of work for us either way. Users can join and leave groups as they please (as long as they are public, which this one would certainly be), so we wouldn't have to put them in if they didn't want to see the flameboard, or take them out if they suddenly did.

I am completely against this idea. Like Myrid said hiding boards kills them. And I really don't see the point in hiding the most popular board because some people have a problem with it. Linhjah's idea about making a group to hide it is the most logical answer. Not that I think there should need to be a group to hide a forum that you don't have to go into in the first place. But if anything that makes the most sense. And considering (im guessing) the vast majority of people would like to still read it, might as well make the minority take the extra step to get rid of it.

Just posting to make it 3 Minnesotans in a row! :bb:

P.S. We're hardcore

I agree with this idea, and yeah this is the most popular section but i also think that alot of the same people post on this section over and over, and the same people respond and put in their 2 cents to the boards constantly (Not that its a bad thing, but it contributes to the popularity). There are also many members who post little to none on the boards and are very active in other areas.

I can see both viewpoints on this. Sadly, people associate QCDN with the flameboard. It's sad, but it's true. Now I know I've mentioned it before, but there is that CiS that I'm trying to get installed. Okay, so I really haven't been bouncing at the opportunity to work on this site lately. Between RL drama and QCDN drama...I've found myself trying to calm people down instead of work on the ins and outs of this site. I'm not going to close this conversation, feel free to keep it going. If the CiS doesn't work out the way I want it to then I have a contingency plan.

I am all for that idea since I think the flameboard is one of the reasons we have so many problems on this server...

I disagree. MMOs are very competitive. Atleast, old style, non-instance containing MMOs are. Even without a flameboard, you're going to have rivalries. You just won't hear about/see most of them.

The whole focus about getting QCDN to be known for more than just the FB was to start providing more content and game discussion. Like the Job Specific Forums. Quite a number of people bitched when new guidelines for the FB were put in place to cut down on the nastiness and now people want to hide it or get rid of it? Seriously... how many things do we have to change around here? 100% of people are never going to be happy. You guys have dealt with it for the years that you've been members and people still rip on the guy that completely took the FB away. And that, like with the reputation system, is what it comes down to. Sometimes things get to the point where you're tired of "fixing" them that it boils down to, "keep it, yes or no?"

Pardon my idiocy, but what is CiS?

The comprehensive ignore system

I wasn't saying whether or not it should be hidden, ditched, or what have you. I was merely building on Reya's ascertainment of "bad news sells", and how it's indicative of how our server thinks on the whole.

Really though, it's the same anywhere. OT boards, flameboards, and their ilk will always generate more traffic (save in forums that are draconian in their moderation staff) than the actual intended content of said forum.

General idea put in terms of off-topic boards, since QCDN is the only place I've seen with a dedicated "Flameboard" (although I'm sure others exist elsewhere):

CS-Nation, for Counter-Strike Gamers: Their Off-topic boards generate (or generated, last I had checked) well over 50% of their forums' overall traffic. The users there would most definitely be up-in-arms if CSN decided to hide, delete, or otherwise nullify their OT board. However, they do have a separate entity for paid subscribers, the Nationalist OT board, which is much closer to the free-for-all like our Flameboard.

by contrast, Ubuntu Forums: They're getting rid of their off-topic board entirely at the end of October, so they can regain their focus on being first-and-foremost a support forum for Ubuntu users. The populace on there isn't divided in this, and most even think it's a good idea, as some of the debates in their "Backyard/OMG {Color} Ponies" board have gone way overboard, and some have degenerated into what looks like our Flameboard here.

Pepole will seek out the Flameboard even if it becomes hidden and requires extra effort to access, cause people love their Qcdn drama and they are attracted to it often its the soap opera of FFXI, It'll never die out.

Ultimately it will come down to what Miros wasn't to do. As owner/operator, we can provide input and ideas, but it's his to choose. Until we pay to use QCDN people can bitch and moan all they want. Free comes at a price. I'd rather see Miros keep doing what he's doing free to us, than to "charge" us some sort of fee (whatever that may be). I could give two shits about a forum for teenage bitchers, but that's just me. On the other hand, it does provide funny material. Meh, I browse QCDN for the articles not the pictures.....

Did Miros take over QCDN from Reeve randomly >.>?
