Disclaimer: I never did read the original argument. I'm assuming, from the ensuing argument in *this* topic, that it was to the tune of "if and *only if* the DRK has sword merits, use sword because for Good Reasons XYZ, it's a good idea". If, however, it was to the tune of "use sword anyway for Good Reasons XYZ, it's a good idea - btw, if you happen to have sword merits, it's even better", then this entire discussion is moot.
Sword merits (considering sword's general uselessness, outside of Ridill, in comparison to other weapons for DD jobs) are not a reasonable expectation. I can go into why, if requested. The reasons are fairly obvious though.
A Ridill, to justify sword merits, is most *definitely* not a reasonable expectation. I can go into why on *this* point too, but it's an even bigger case of stating the obvious.
Following from this, good advice will be advice that applies to the majority of up and coming DRKs with the reasonable assumption that they do not have sword merits. Limited-audience or situational advice should be to the tune of "hey, if you *do* happen to be in this unusual situation of being a DRK who has sword merits, consider this."
If the advice then goes on to recommend *getting* sword merits for this purpose, it has to justify how much of a benefit it would be, for how long in the DRK's career, up against the time spent getting the limit points (accounting appropriately for the fact that not everyone has BRD RDM WHM WAR NIN and/or MNK at 75), not to mention any time wasted or other jobs weakened by potentially taking *away* other previous combat skill merits. And if the sword merits are ultimately temporary, it also has to justify the fact that ultimately the time spent meriting sword will, too, be a waste when the sword merits are taken away to merit some other combat skill.
And that justification, I must say, would be a very interesting read. However, I'm a bit of a skeptic and I'm kinda having a hard time imagining said justification. So I'll just assume that the aforementioned advice does not recommend *getting* sword merits for that express purpose, and therefore only applied if you had them, or were going to get them, *anyway*.
