Police: Gang rape outside school dance lasted over two hours - CNN.com
CNN) -- A California high school student who police said was gang raped in a two-and-a-half-hour assault outside a homecoming dance remained hospitalized in stable condition Monday, two days after she was flown from the attack scene in critical condition.

As of late Monday, two suspects had been arrested in the case and a third was being questioned.

"There is one individual in custody who has made some spontaneous statements that have led me to believe that he is culpable for what happened," Richmond police Lt. Johan Simon said.

Nineteen-year-old Manuel Ortega, described as a former student at the school, was arrested soon after he fled the scene and will face charges of rape, robbery and kidnapping, police said.

A 15-year-old was later arrested and charged with one count of felony sexual assault. A third teenager was being interviewed, according to Lt. Mark Gagan of the police department in Richmond, California.

"Based on witness statements and suspect statements, and also physical evidence, we know that she was raped by at least four suspects committing multiple sex acts," Gagan said.

Investigators said as many as 15 people, all males, stood around watching the assault, but did not call police or help the victim, a 15-year-old student at Richmond High School in suburban San Francisco.

"As people announced over time that this was going on, more people came to see, and some actually participated," Gagan said.

Authorities had interviewed the victim, and the search for other attackers and bystanders who watched and did not report the rape was in "full-court press," according to Gagan.

"We have checked Facebook and YouTube to try to find any revealing evidence," he said. "We're looking in particular to see if anyone posted any video of the incident."

Several other individuals were detained at the scene but not arrested, Simon said.

The attack occurred on school grounds as the annual homecoming dance was under way inside the school Saturday night, authorities said.

The victim was found unconscious and "brutally assaulted" under a bench shortly before midnight Saturday, after police received a call from someone in the area who had overheard people at the assault scene "reminiscing about the incident," Gagan said.

"She ended up with those guys under her own will because she knew one of the boys who had gone to the high school before," Gagan said. "Right now, we're looking at toxicology reports to determine her blood-alcohol content and to determine if she was drugged."

According to authorities, the victim was flown to an area hospital in critical condition. She was in stable condition Monday, police said.

"This just gets worse and worse the more you dig into it," Gagan said. "It was like a horror movie after looking at the evidence. I can't believe not one person felt compelled to help her."

Kitty Genovese comes directly to mind.

How people can be this fucked up, is just...beyond me. *Everyone* has some kind of standards. I don't care how horrible your neighborhood is, or how low your upbringing was. You have some moral fiber to you, pure and simple.

Totally agree with this. Actually makes me feel a little bit ill, she probably won't ever lead a 'normal' life after this. Poor girl.

Kill every last one of them.

No seriously, this is a horrifying act and all involved should be severely punished...

i hate hearing about stuff like this, things like the kitty case. Ive been told many times you may think you will help but you will never know until your in that situation, im sorry but i KNOW i would help. You dont just sit by and watch this stuff happen, its fuckin sick. Karma is coming for those who stood by.

Does that school have an enormous campus or something? After 2 1/2 hours of something like that no chaperones noticed? No one made any noise during the incident?

I agree, but first put them in prison as the sex slave for 2 1/2 hours.

Even small schools have dark corridors.

If you don't want someone to scream, punch them in the larynx. The police did say she was brutally beaten.

I deplore people such as these. Shit like that should be sent to Gitmo :|

Ah, seeing as how she was found under a bench, I assumed it was outside.

If I had a son that watched something like that and didn't intervene (obviously not trying to stop it himself, would have likely gotten mobbed) by calling the police or any authority, I would disown him.

My standard response for this shit, execute the animal scum that harm humans -_- And don't tell me I'm dehumanizing them.. THEY DEHUMANIZED THEMSELVES! :|

See what I mean, what is it with people nowadays? There was a time when if someone witnessed a robbery/mugging/rape people would jump to their feet and come to their fellow man/womans rescue. Instead some of these jackasses participated? /sigh its hearing stuff like this that makes me scared for my daughter when she gets older.

Crime can't happen in California, they've banned guns! >:|

This is why weapons shouldn't be banned. Gun control is the theory that a 120 pound woman can fend off a 200+ pound man. >:|

Oh, and >:|

Forgive my rant, but as someone close to a rape victim I want to flip the switch on these fucks, if found guilty, myself.

How awful, this is going to get super ugly and alot of people arent going to be the same ever again.

Um.... so you're saying gun control would have prevented this but if there was proper gun control the girl wouldn't HAVE the gun in the first place. Not only that but just cause she has a gun doesn't mean that the attackers cant have guns too.

No no, I'm entirely against gun control.

I would say its the bystander effect (as pointed out earlier), if it wasn't for the supposed claim that some people who passed the area even joined in...

Seriously, what did they think? "Oh, a gang bang on an unconscious woman with at least 4 other guys! Where do I sign up? Oh, no need? Oh well, I'll just jump in. Scoot over"...

It was a set up. The girl was lured there by a boy she knew. She was supposed to go and meet her father who was going to pick her up after the dance. The boy had her come wait with them while they were drinking. Yes the found alcohal in the girls system. The people who watched were most likely friends of the people who set the whole thing up. Due to the loud music and the fact that the incident happens away from the gym, the chaparones and police were not anywhere near. Nothing was said about what the father was doing for the two and a half hours his daughter was being rapes and beating to near death<she was in critical when she was found>. My guess would be muttering and hunting for her wondering why she was not at the meeting place.

There is a link there to the local station. I hope I did the link right...

When my Dad was an Alaskan State Prison Guard he was told this by one of the prisoners: What's mine is mine and what's yours is mine if I can take it from you.

When I lived in Fresno, CA the guy upstairs would beat his live-in gf. Every time I called 911. One of the dispatchers even asked me if I was outside my apt because the screaming was so loud. She was shocked when I told her I was inside my apt which was downstairs, with all the doors and windows closed and locked. The gf never pressed charges on the guy. I was even told by one police officer to 'not make a false police report again or face the possibility of being arrested.' How screwed up is that? It didn't stop me from calling 911 though. The girl finally left after he put her in the hospital for the eighth time in the 18 months I lived there.

When I lived with my sister and brother-in-law the neighbor's pit bull broke through the fence to attack my dog and me. I screamed for help over and over. No one ever came or called 911. When I finally got to the back door with my dog and was able to get inside the house to call for help the police wouldn't even come stating that it 'wasn't a dog attack if your dog was able to fight off the other dog. It isn't a dog attack if human skin wasn't broken.' The fact that I was wearing a heavy sweatshirt and jeans and that both the pit bull had torn before my german shepherd bit him in the ass to get him off me was not relevant. Buck needed stitches and was never a sweet, fun loving dog again. He was always on his guard. Whenever I see a pit bull, even a puppy, I get terrified that it will attack me.

Why was I the only person who called 911 to help the girl upstairs in Fresno when there were other ppl at home in the other apts? Why did no one call for me when Buck and I were being attacked? For the same reason no one helped this poor girl or Kitty or the other girl mentioned in the wiki that was beaten to death in an apt that overlooked where Kitty was attacked...because ppl don't want to get involved...that is isn't their place or their business. I believe the moment you think that, your humanity is lost.
