Guy Splits Face Into Pieces

Just to put the question of what qualifies for a Darwin Award to bed, here's the official requirement:

Excellence

* Astoundingly stupid judgment.

The candidate's foolishness must be unique and sensational, perhaps because the award is intended to be funny. A number of foolish but common activities, such as smoking in bed, are excluded from consideration. In contrast, self-immolation caused by smoking after being administered a flammable ointment in a hospital and specifically told not to smoke is grounds for nomination. One 'Honorable Mention' (a man who attempted suicide by swallowing nitroglycerine pills, and then tried to detonate them by running into a wall) is noted to be in this category, despite being intentional and self-inflicted, which would normally disqualify the inductee.

So not jumping far enough off a pier, as well as jumping from a moving vehicle and walking on train tracks, would qualify as foolish but common.

Ah well, meh, I don't think cause something's "common" it should be "ok" :\

It's not Darwin award material. Just because he did stupid shit, doesn't mean his offspring would, and so on. If he, however, had a kid and decided to hide a baby in his car trunk because he didn't want him to be exposed to the light. Yeah, that guy shouldn't be able to reproduce, he's fucked up. Not someone who wanted to have fun, albeit a dangerous form of it, and he a mistake. Unless you're suggesting that all people should just become shut-ins who put bubble wrap all over their room, of course.

I guess I'm just desensitized in that it didn't really bother me but it's pretty unbelievable that guy was clearly alive at the end of that video. Moving his mouth around and swallowing and stuff

Can't even imagine how that's possible to survive even for a couple of days.

A rollercoaster car goes off track killing everyone riding it. Those people took the risk to seek the thrill based on confidence in human engineering.... what then? He/She as well educated as he/she is could easily make a mistake. I'm not saying it's likely because I know scrutinises the designs would go through, but it's happened and it's possible.

If we can put our trust in some person we've never met, possibly half way across the globe to design an unflawed machine that flings us around while strapped in. Why not jumping off a relatively low wharf, putting trust in your own abilities. Everyone makes mistakes, doesn't make them more stupid OR stupid at all for that matter.

Right here, this quote is spot on, a roller coaster is a fantastic thing to compare it to. You may argue "Well, it's a regulated thrill", but honestly, a risk is a risk. Mistakes happen in any situation, and honestly, if you consider someone coming in contact with an accident as winner of this "Darwin Award" load of crap, then I wonder what else you consider to be stupid.

What do I think is stupid? Driving while under the influence. Why? Because it endangers others. What do I not think is stupid? Doing something that could potentially harm yourself, to a degree anyways. Jumping off a little cliff is far, far, far from the dumbest thing I've heard. Do you want to know why he kept doing it though? He did it once, everything went well, so he thought "why not?". It's a common feeling that many people go through, and you say to yourself, "Oh, nothing happened the last time or the time before that, so, what could possibly go wrong on the 900th time?"

I'm more sickened by the people who are talking ill of the dead to be honest.

There's a flaw in such thinking though, roller coasters are designed to be fast and such but they are far safer than what those kids were doing. They were designed to have safety precautions and whatnot, it's very rare (specially compared to other things like even just driving) that shit REALLY goes wrong from roller coasters. I mean, just being alive no matter what there's always risks, but there's a difference in risks with things that have at least been designed to try and prevent death and leaping off things that weren't designed for such things at all >.> I'd say it's along the same lines true but the risks of what he was doing compared to the REAL (not perceived) risks of riding a roller coaster are far FAR greater a gap than people seem to believe.

I'm more sickened by the people who are talking ill of the dead to be honest.

I never got that thinking, if the dead died doing something stupid, why respect them now that they're dead? I'm not speaking ill to insult him but more to get a point across to others who do such a thing... too often people do stupid shit and get glorified for it :\ and that only increases the desire of another to do it for attention. I don't care if someone is alive or dead though, if they did something stupid, there's no reason why it should be ignored.

I dunno, maybe I've just become too cold hearted over my life.

I dunno, maybe you should do yourself and others a massive favor, and either think before you speak, or shut the fuck up.

You want a better example of any kind of thrill? Even those with safety precautions are by nature dangerous.

- Skydiving
- BASE Jumping
- Bungee Jumping
- Base Climbing
- Racing

God, you're not cold-hearted, you're just looking to start a fight, as usual.

Driving your car is dangerous and a stupid thing to do. Dying in a car accident should get you a Darwin Award.

This is by no means a "Darwin Award" (Sadly this is the first time i heard of this lol), however it IS his own fault for doing it.

The roller coaster is agood comparison but not totally. When riding a rollercoaster you are guaranteed 100% safety, when your skydiving or racing cars (legally), your accepting a certain risk that comes with the territory, and i believe you sign some paperwork acknowledging your risking your life. People dont ride rollercoaster with the thought that they could lose their lives, or get seriously injured doing so.

He was doing something, imo that was stupid, no matter how many other people were doing it before him (We have no idea anyway), it does suck but he has no one to blame. R.I.P and i hope others learn from what theyve seen.

*sighs* clearly you guys don't seem to get my point :\

there's shit that has been made for thrills and had safety precautions put in so you're really not going to likely be hurt and there's just plain stupid shit. I'd say your list is dumb stuff to do though what with base jumping, skydiving, bungee jumping etc (btw you said base twice). If people really wanna do that for their own thrills, so be it, I don't care, but I'm going to still call you stupid regardless.

Driving your car is dangerous but not stupid, it has a means of transportation not a "I wanna do this just for jollies!" -_- it is still safer though cause of the rules and the design fail safe systems built in. True nothing will every be 100% safe but there's varying degrees and clearly THAT WAS JUST STUPID and far less safe than merely driving your car.

So if a guy lights up a barbecue and burns himself by accident hes an idiot and gets a darwin award for not using a microwave or letting a woman cook instead?

no, cause that's not, again, entertainment so much as nourishment and it's still safer than that unless he's REALLY doing it wrong >.>

Well, don't throw the term "Darwin Award" around whenever you feel like. Awards are meant to be rewarded to those who deserve them. Hey! He took a risk, and he probably didn't think much of it because it went right before, but it didn't go right this time. If, again, that's deserving of this stupid imaginative award, then they might as well give awards to everyone. Hey, you walked down 5 steps on a flight of stairs, congrats! Hey, you went to sleep, here's an award! Oh buddy boy, you went to the bathroom, here ya go!

Save it for those who deserve it, and don't think you're coldhearted, you're just trying to pretend that you're flawless.

How are thrill seekers beneficial to the species? The only benefits I see are stupid people dying so there's less of em for the species :P
Thrill seekers are more likely to act, and as such has increased chances of discovering food/new sources of food/new place to live than those that do not.

In the same way, aggressive behavior has increased chance to survive during periods of starvation. However, a calm benevolent personality has increased chances of survival during periods with normal or plenty of food.

Each personality comes with downsides and upsides. A calm personality who share with others, are more likely receive help in return. If, for example, they share of their food to those that does not have food, they are more likely to receive food from the individuals they shared it with, when they do not have food. If they take care of sick individuals, they are more likely to receive help in return. However, they usually are lower-ranked in social groups, and as such as less chance of reproducing in a rank-based social environment.

The aggressive type is more likely to get what he want, and is more likely to be the alpha in a group, and as such has a greater chance of spreading his genes. However, as he is more likely to get in to fights with other males, odds are he will either get killed prematurely, or be excluded from the group to live on his own, which greatly reduces his chances of survival.

Thrill seeker is closely related to the aggressive personality, but it doesn't have to be. In the human world, a lot of criminals are thrill seekers with a aggressive personality.

Purely evolutionary, thrill seekers and aggressive types are likely the individuals with the greatest chance of spreading their genes. Especially as they are more likely to sleep around and "cheat".

Almost every single personality type has its pros and cons. Some are more important than others during certain times, which is why different personalities exist - to increase the chance of the species surviving. If every individual in a species had the same personality, it would likely be the one to fit the environment best. However, if the conditions change, then this species is as good as dead, as it will have a hard time adapting to the new environment. Personalities are an important part of a species survival.

I do not believe mental disorders resulting in a psychopathic mass murderer has an evolutionary purpose. But then again, that is usually the result of how they were raised and what influences and experiences they had as a kid. Dogs for example aren't really born as aggressive dogs, but they can become psychopathic mass murderers depending on how you choose to raise it and which experiences you provide it with.

I think a good way to put it would be to give a Darwin Award to some idiot who decides that, against all sense and logic, it would be a good idea to ride around on the roof of a car while its moving, and in the process dies from falling off the car. See a Darwin Award is given to those senseless idiots who do stupid shit even though they know that they are going to get hurt. When you go base jumping, cliff diving, bungee jumping, etc etc, you dont expect to get hurt since those safety precautions are in place for a reason. When someone gets hurt during said events, it's usually due to simple human error, or equipment failures. This guy jumping off a high place into a body of water does not earn him a Darwin Award simply because even though its a dangerous act, its not guaranteed that he was going to get hurt like this. What happened to him was simply an example of bad timing plus gravity......

Am I the only one that doesnt think what he did was so dangerous? Jumping into water is not so dangerous, even in this case. Sure, it wouldve been safer to pick a point with less concrete to clear but fuck... people "jump into water" everyday with 0 concern of the risk of death because there isnt much more than going through everyday life.

Even in this case, the guy got hurt because he slipped and bad footing sent him into the landing, it was an ACCIDENT, and accident that with sure footing probably wouldnt have happened, but dont act like no ones ever fallen off a diving board before and cracked their head open on the side of the pool. The difference is this is an extreme case and thus became a gruesome internet sensation, but it doesn't make the guy a moron, it makes him a very very extreme gradient to the pool of people in diving related accidents. (and one unlucky son of a bitch)

I feel really bad for the guy, especially after finding out he died, but already being a fan of the amazing resilience and ingenuity of the human body... the fact that this man was able to be on that table.... with controlled bleeding.... breathing.... semi-conscious.... and even squirming a bit.... has taken my appreciation to new heights....

He is definately not a darwin award winner... but if some guy had witnessed this, decided to go diving anyway and was then eaten by a blood lured shark.... that guy would have my vote.

Respect the dead because they can't fight back, idiot. It wasn't even him doing stupid shit that he died, he's probably done it a 1000 times and it's never happened. Why would it go wrong now?

Fuck off.

Exactly my point. When you do stuff, and nothing goes wrong, you don't really worry. He's not trying to get glorified, don't mistake that on him, and we're not glorifying him. We're just saying it's pretty unreasonable to say "oh, one less for the human species to ruin us!". What are thrill seekers doing to be "beneficial to the species" you ask? Honestly, what are you doing for us? Oh, you have a job? I'm sure he did too, so knock it off. Stop acting high and mighty, you look like a clown.
