Halo 3 - Update of Updates

That's rarely ever the case. As far as Armored Core 4 goes, on Hard mode, there are a lot of guides on how to build the uber mech and hold your hand through what to do. There really are to many resources out their for gamers to use to look good that unless you personally know them or play with them, you shouldn't assume anything about them.

Not sayin' that's how you are but still, just one of those things.

Its a fair point and all but still...

I beat said game on expert...
You did not...
I am better then you at said game...

Thats how the story ends.

You killed some uber boss...
I did not...
You are better then me at said game.

End of another story.

The achievement is just a proof and reminder of what you did.
To some it means squat. I personaly do not chase achievements i will not enjoy doing, which is why i have alot of games in the 800- range.

But it's not the end of the story. What if you cheated your way through some game and I've never played it, let alone cheated at it. That doesn't make you better, just means I haven't played it yet. Just because someone beats BulletWitch on the Hell difficulty and I only beat two stages in Normal doesn't mean they're better at the game than me, just means they can tolerate a far worse range of games than I can. Same could be said for AC4. I see what you're sayin' though and that may apply to you but when I look at someones achievements I don't look at it that way. Games, especially in this generation now, are not hard. It's just a matter of who cares enough to do what and when they do it. The only way to show skill is to beat other people in some form of competition. If the game doesn't allow it over PSN or Live or the mode you'd like (i.e. who's better at campaign missions) video it, YouTube it, and make a competition out of it.

Again a fair point...

I dont agree with the view tho. If i beat the game on hard and you did not, yes i am better at that game. You have the choice to then provide some proof you are equally skilled by beating it on the same or harder difficulty.

If you have not played a game it does make you less skilled at that game... It also makes you irrelevant in this arguement.

As for cheating... It just becomes something uncontrolable and no way to filter it out. On paper, or in this case live tags... He is still better then you at said game for having the achievement until someone proves he cheated.

That would be all i add to that conversation... Not that i dont love talkin with ya Strid. I personally dont compare myself to friends, skill wise, through achievements but i can see how someone that does has a point.

All I'm sayin' is a long winded, too each their own. In the end I can't tell you how to look at achievements. However, on the important issue, we can agree on. They sure are fun to get.

Anyone can get any achievement with enough work, end of story. I had Uncharted for months, and never bothered to beat it on crushing. One weekend I go and beat it on crushing, cause I felt like it. It doesn't mean I miraculously got better at that game. It meant I had the spare time to burn, and I didn't mind dying a few times, rethinking my approach and keeping at it until I won. Player skill is simply how long it'll take you to do it. Gamerscore is simply meaningless, skill wise.

It doesn't rate skill, it rates competitiveness specific to gamerscore. One of my best friends, was ranked in the top 100 Halo 3 players, and was on the top level as far as the ranking system goes. He had first place medals in probably most of the Gripshift races on XBLA. His gamerscore is probably under 2000. Cause he doesn't care.

Myself, I could really care less if someone is better than me at a game. I play the game to have fun, not raise my self esteem. If getting an achievement or trophy is fun to me, I'll go ahead and do it. If someone looks over my gamerscore and looks down on me for it, really not my problem.

That wasn't exactly my point osy. I meant more as in total gamer points, not single achievements. 'Total gamerscore = total games played +(*?) time spent' and thats it. If you don't play 20 games you can't have 20k gamerscore. I just think its silly when you have people like Chasym (no offense) go out and rent a game like air bender just to get the 1000 achievement points.

Also I could argue that even though you may have the AC4 hard achievement and I don't I still might be better than you at the game, maybe I just don't give two shits to play through on hard and just chose to play online all the time. Such as with gears of war. I played with plenty of people who had the 10k kills and all those online achievement but I know for a fact I could rape every last one of them. I just didn't ever play ranked matches because I thought they were pointless. And sure this is a case to case scenario, I'm just throwing it out there.

Also don't get me wrong, I'm not against achievements, they definitely don't take away from a game. Just IMO they don't really add a whole lot and I would be just as happy if they weren't in games. Unlike Baj I def wouldn't let achievements be a deciding factor on which counsel I'd buy a game because at the end of the day they mean shit to me. But if they make a game more fun for other people, sweet.

Well i completely agree as far as total gamerscore. Higher score does not mean you are better at games lol. Some individual achievements do. And there are holes in every arguement but going out and getting the achievement is solid proof of you having the skill required to do so... If that makes sense..

As far as the individual games achievements go.. The ones that require skill, do just that. Require skill.

10,000 kills in gears does not take skill, it takes time.

Beating some games on higher difficulty or some nuts goal in a game for a tough achievement does take skill.

Fire i mean you are just contradicting yourself in that last comment...
You didnt get better at Uncharted... Yet... You took more time, thought over a better route and so on... Sounds like your skill improved to me bud.

My achievements are a mix of everything. Some are just for fun, some i really wanted to go for a challenge, some just came with beating the game, and yes some came because i wanted to make sure some friends knew my skill lvl on certain games.

hey, i didnt rent air bender...i borrowed it. and i didnt do it just for the easy 1k, cause that was done in the first moments of the game. I actually beat that game even tho i had the 1k in like 2 min. But i did buy the EA sports trackers just for the fast achievements that took all but no effort to get. i like gamer score, i like hard to get achievements because if you get them it shows you did something hard as hell, like beating through the fire and flames, or my constant example of frank the pimp in dead rising.
I love achievements and love waiting to see what each game im looking forward to is offering on the achievement list. i even picked up halo 3 again just for the new achieves. Adding new ones just made me feel like the game was no longer complete for me.
i admit i like it when people i know ask me "how the fuck did you get that achievement???!!" The hard accomplishments are the best, the ones that just come as you play or just are not that hard i dont really go all out for, its the ones i need to break out some skill to get that i want.
And not that collect 5000000000000 flags in this level crap either, thats just tedious boredom. i did that in crackdown and i dont see myself ever doing it again.

I really don't like the new update they did with Halo3 i was 29 in lonewolfs, 24 in team social, 36 in Team doubles, had over 300+exp now i know you get to keep ur rank and all but its like i gotta start all over again seeing that i have 0exp in all the area i had rank in. Them setting this shit up like they did was retarded in a way and i really don't like it at all, if they wanted it set up like that in the first place they should have done in then not now. i was so into halo3 but now i see myself playing COD4 or KUF-COD more offen.

what they did in TU2 was nothing new, they did this in halo 2 alot as time progressed to keep things fresh and keep people playing/coming back. i prefer they do it this way. ranks were completely reset like once or twice a year.

It's not the only reason why I go with 360 games instead of getting them for the PS3, but it is one of them. When the game's pretty much exactly the same on both consoles, you might as well go with the version that has something the other doesn't; and that's achievements.

It's sort of hard to say one way or another, when games are diced up into battles, you get to one, play through, get to the next one... if you die, you keep trying on that same one. Now some sections you breeze through, others you got to replay til you win.

It's kind of like... you are playing a game where there's a trap door... you run out and fall in the trap. You reload, run back and move around the trap door. I think most of us will agree, that person didn't get any better. That second trap door is still going to get him, and he'll just reload and get past that one. It's determination, not skill, and it doesn't say anything bad about him. It's how I get past parts that make me stuck. I take advantage of the fact that the experience will reload itself similarly... and find a way.

And with enemy AI, which will lead to them coming in in different ways often. We can all agree, that leads to someone with enough time to sink in the ability to beat anything. Often the enemies can come in swarms, always trying to flank you, never stopping. But sometimes you'll reload after a few deaths, and the exact same bad guys will come at you head on, one at a time, giving you a moment to rest.

Yes, I get better at a game, but there's a lot else going on as well that would allow me to get past with the exact same skill.

And I guess the point being I don't really care to use achievements to prove I can do anything, while I don't mind doing one that sounds fun for the sake of doing it. I guess I'd say... I'm not really close to any people who'd even give a shit in the first place.

Now I'll say this, if you wanna use achievements to prove skill, it takes VERY SPECIFIC CIRCUMSTANCES.

1. The game has to be hard. Like Ninja Gaiden 2, Pixeljunk Eden, Super Stardust HD. As in, not everyone will be able to beat the medium levels, let alone touch the hards.

2. The game must have JUST come out, Within the first week or so.

You can judge someone's skill level within that week, whatever they're pulling off before the game has been picked apart and documented, and they're overall spread of accomplishments in a set amount of time.

But that can only prove you're good, it can't show someone sucks. That same person might have a lot of work or school that week, or just not really enjoy playing that game and not want to push themselves.

For me, when I beat Pixeljunk Eden's main game, I wanted to keep playing. So I did a few trophies. The trophies made sense in that they were beating the same levels but in a more full sense, so I went for it. To me that added to the game. That's it though. If they were offline, and no one could see them, it would have meant the exact same. I never finished the trophies cause they got frusterating and it turned into not being fun, and it doesn't bother me that someone might look at my trophies and think I'm unable.

When you start to worry others care, I think it becomes bad for you. Not trying to be a dick at all or insulting, just sort of know how that goes. Do things for the pure fun of it, life is really too short to dedicate a chunk of it to something you might regret later. I can say I don't regret playing FFXI, but I regret spending hundreds of hours in FFXI doing shit I didn't find fun so I could get some equipment to impress other people. Those are hours I could have been out meeting people and just living life, instead I was worried if some people on the internet would think poorly of me cause I had a moldavite earring instead of that +7 fucker from AV. I think it's the same thing here.

As for PS3/360 version. I usually go for the PS3 simply cause my 360 disc drive is a lot louder, and I'm more fearful of disc scratches and hardware failure on my 360 side. I'm more used to the PS3 controller since I've been playing on the same setup since PS2. Achievements might sway me 360 if those things weren't more important to me. Don't get me wrong, I'm not too afraid to buy 360 games cause scratches and RROD, I just care about that a lil more than achievements is all.

And to be fair, I had to send in my PS3 cause it kept freezing on GTA4, and I had to send in my Wii cause it had a bad disc drive, and my 360 has never given me any trouble.

Yeah I know what you mean. For me though if its multiplayer i go 360 for live and if its single player I go PS3. I've had a RROD and acouple disks scratched, and although I have a new dvd drive and new xbox, I'd still rather be safe and not be out a game if it were to ever happen again.

So... Chas, Make and was it Strid?? I know what we need to do.. As you all may allready know as well.

Just need to beat the "Halo" level on Legendary. After the spark section when you come back outside the terminal areas there are 4 ghosts on the left of the base... We need to ride out like badasses together with the Iron skull on at all times.

Don't worry skaw, well own two player co-op together <3

So i just got word that i have to stay at work so i won't be able to tonight until after 9 P.M. CST. If you guys want to wait till then or do it tomorrow after 5 CST that'd be just dandy.

I got rid of Halo 3 a long, long time ago. However, I have been entertainin' the idea of rentin' it or gettin' it back for a while, at least to get the new achievements and help a buddy through on Legendary. None of them seem hard to get except the *Vidmaster Challenge: 7 on 7 (0 points) – Enter into any ranked or social playlist with 7 EXP on the 7th of the month*. Seems like you'd have to find a way to get only 7 exp then stop until the 7th...
