THE COLOR, BISH, THE COLOR!

which suspect was able to tell the officer the color of the hat on his head and why?

look, STILL DOESN'T SAY "which color?" you're just re-stating the already proven wrong.

Now, if you are unwilling to listen to the opinions of others, or even the counterpoint, you really shouldn't be here at all.
I don't believe it's entirely fair to make such a statement given the facts.
I for one did recognize that Thnikkaman's answer was partially right and said earlier in this thread "Maybe you can ask for partial credit.", and that after he insulted me personally, and questioned the integrity of QCDN by implying any user would have anything to gain by sucking up to me.

Thnikkaman's reply was "The whole mil or nothing. [if I don't get it then] I guess I will just retire". Whop-dee-doo, I couldn't care less whether he retires. I made a valid offer which was rejected. To me this is a done deal, and no amount of whining is going to change that.

the world is harsh, you've got to do things correctly, but must we be so harsh when dealing with those who have to go through it with us?
People can roll with whomever they like. On a personal level I wouldn't associate with someone who throws instant tantrums when things do not go their way. To directly answer your question: Yes, those who are unable or unwilling to resolve an issue in a mature manner must be dealt with harshly.

that's all between you and him in the end.

he did, in fact, answer the required information correctly though, so possibly it should be full credit, but i can't really be the judge of such, i can just give my interpretation of what was asked, and in fact, it is what i'm sure most people interpret the question being asked, but only a poll or something similar would tell the whole truth.

Nyrona said:
it asks for two things.

1. who would guess correctly.
2. why they would guess it correctly.

he, in fact, got those both right, then stated the wrong color.

not included:
3. what would he guess?

I think it will help to establish some procedural rules.
Either we are going exactly by what was stated, or we go by what's implied.

Consider you have a friend named Billybobjoe. Jimwaynebob asks you, "Hey, you got Billybobjoe's phone number?". What is that question asking for? In the strictest sense it is asking whether you have the number, not what the number is. Most all of the time Jimwaynebob actually wants to know what the number is.

Be that as it may, let's look at the original post.
Note how jail cell #1 was described as having one suspect, and jail cell #2 as housing the other three? Critical thinking and the powers of deduction would lead one to believe that the original poster was counting from left to right.

Let's further assume in order to get a 100% correct answer one had to only name which suspect, and explain why that suspect would be the one.

Given the above, the right answer for which suspect would be #3, not #2 as Thnikkaman stated. Thnikkaman was counting from the right (I still don't understand why), while the problem had already established that the count goes from the left.

Let's look at Thinkkaman's original answer (I numbered the lines):
Thinkkaman said:
L1 It's the second guy.
L2 Why?
L3 After a short time, Number 1 has not shouted out what colour hat he is wearing.
L4 Because of this number 2 knows that he cannot be wearing the same colour hat as the person in front of him.
L5 If he was then number 1 would see two black hats and would therefore know that his hat must be white.
L6 He isn't wearing the same colour hat as the man in front.
L7 The man in front is wearing a black hat.
L8 number two can confidently shout out that the hat he is wearing is white.
L1 - wrong, it's the third guy based on the counting system established by the problem, correct if you count from the right

L3 - wrong, it's #4 who can't shout, based on the counting system established by the problem, correct if you count from the right

L4 - wrong, #2 is facing the wall, correct if you count from the right

L5 - wrong, #1 is facing the wall, also wrong if you count from the right, the correct statement if counting from the right would have been "then number 1 would see two white hats"

L6 - wrong, #2 is facing the wall, correct if you count from the right

L7 - wrong, there is no case in which #2 would see someone in front of him wear a black hat, no matter from which side you start the count

L8 - wrong, if counting from the left then #2 can not make any statements about his hat color (other than guessing), also wrong if counting from the right, as #2's hat would be black.

I wouldn't want to put a percentage on this, but even with wanting to see the things that are right, I don't see a 99.8% correct answer, and I most certainly do not see a 100% correct answer.

Completely disregarding the suspect naming their hat color, do you honestly believe that the explanation given by Thnikkaman is worth full credit?

Poll's never tell the truth, they are opinions by definition.

now, lets look here, all of those marked as wrong, would be correct using the opposite colors.

also, it's still stated in the response that "#2" is the man in the middle of the 3.

the grounds on which this contest are based are to answer the EXACT questions which are given, no implying involved.

if you could IMPLY things then Thnikk is completely correct, since in his statement he had the colors switched, and the numbering backwards, but if you read it you could imply that he was referring to the correct person.

I get it now! If you change the riddle, and make assumptions into what he was thinking at the time, and hold those assumptions to be worth more than someone who just answers the question properly, he could be right! Good point...

Sorry but the life threatening situation depicted in the riddle is not up to multiple interpretations. BLACK does not equal WHITE, even if that wasn't what you meant, it's what you typed. If I throw a football through someone's window while playing catch with my friend, I am not off the hook by stating that it was obvious I intended to throw it to my friend, therefor the window is not my fault, and I am not in the wrong.

How is this still being argued?

/sigh bigboy...

the fact of the matter is that he did in fact have the correct reasoning and in his mind the correct person. now, the numbers are not subjective information, they are objective, therefore open to any opinion, there was NOT a numbering actually given in the actual question.

btw, i thought i've been through this, the color of the hat shouldn't matter, because it was not actually asked to define the colors of the hat.

the color of the hat matters. it was a TWO part question

Once again, quoting it for you.

THE COLOR, BISH, THE COLOR!

Question is:
a) which suspect
b) what color hat on his head
c) why

learn to read.

ok moch, BOLD FOR ME where it says "what color hat is on his head" in the original question, if you can find it, i will commend you

This is all I needed to read.
Contest is based on exact questions, and if implying would be allowed Thnikk would be completely correct, thus Thnikk is not completely correct, which was my point all along, and which is also why he didn't get the cash.

Hi Quetzalcoatl! Just want to wish you all a safe and happy holiday!!!

In keeping with the cheerful holidays, I have a puzzle for you ^.^

Take a look at this picture:
Untitled-1.jpg

And the story goes:
Once upon a time 4 men were apprehended for committing a terrible crime. The police officers locked them into two jail cells which are seperated by a brick wall. In jail cell #1, is one suspect, and in jail cell #2, are the three others. The officers tell them that the crime they committed is punishable by death and they are to be executed tomorrow morning. However, being that it's near Christmas, he gives them a second chance. He goes by and places a hat on top of each suspects' heads and says,

"I have placed a hat on each of your heads. There are exactly 2 black hats and 2 white hats. WITHOUT turning around, taking off your hat, moving, making a sound or talking, if any of you can guess what color hat is on top of your head, I will let all 4 of you free. If any of you guess the wrong, you will all be shot on the spot. If any of you break the aforementioned rules, you will all die as well."

Now, my question is, which suspect was able to tell the officer the color of the hat on his head and why?

The winner of the puzzle will receive a prize of 1 million gil. (from me of course, think of it as a christmas present ^^; )

please post on this thread and i'll come back to see who has the right answer.. and YES there is a right answer and YES i know what the answer is.

lol take a look at the bold. thanks.

And, Thnikaman, I don't like you... you're one of those greedy NA-type players. GO cry me a river noob. You lost fair and square.. and its MY GIL and MY contest and I will give it out the way I see fit, so FUCK YOU, kthxbai.

if you're going to argue, please look over all the shit first. god damn elementary school kids these days ^^;

now what?! change your tune AGAIN?

that is not involved in the question moch, that is involved in the background story to the question.

the question is thus:

"Now, my question is, which suspect was able to tell the officer the color of the hat on his head and why?"

it is not stated in that question "name the color"

have you ever thought, that if everyone else who's read this understood the question, how come you are unable to?

lol, maybe it's you being too stupid to realize it.

obviously it is you who needs to re-attend school, because you do not know how to find the question in a story problem. There is a body to the story then there is a question based on the information given in the story which you need to answer, the part that states the question of what color the hat is is in the body of the story, not once is it stated in the question.
