Communism lacks incentives. Thats why the people ultimately become unhappy and unmotivated. Person A works harder than Person B, but Person B gets treated exactly the same as Person A. Therefore, Person A decides its not worth the effort to work harder, so he slacks off too and acts just like Person B. This equates to less production and a lazy society. I really don't feel that it is fair to compare it to communism.
The incentive of this shell is, by attending and working as a team,
everyone has an equal shot at obtaining something really nice, of value. Everyone who contributes to one fight has an equal shot at obtaining one item that they want. And only one person will obtain the item; the rewards aren't equal. Which, is kind of like a lottery. Everyone pays $5 for a lottery ticket, but one person wins. Maybe two or three. Not everyone can win, but the person who does benefits greatly.
Comparable to joining an established shell, starting last in points, and waiting upwards of 6 months for any decent gear, some would rather take the lottery chance than being forced to invest a good portion of a year to see any results at all.
There are some people who don't like that slave-like feeling of joining some of the more prevalent HNM camping shells. This may be an interesting alternative if it is carried out well.

A properly functioning points system rewards effort, not time served. The ones who commit to giving more, get more in return.
And in order to put in effort, what is consumed? Time. Points are generally earned through time spent, or, effort put into making time for camps. It's pretty much the same thing. If people can't put the time in, this may be a great alternative (and they know going into it that there isn't the insurance policy that a point system-based shell holds - its a risk, much like a lottery, but for some its better than not being able to participate at all.)
