I hate low level leveling..

- Historically more expensive than Hauberk.
- Was HELLUVA lot more expensive than Hauberk when I bought it.
- Was fully intent on burning through 59-69 when I bought it.
- Shit happened that prevented said burning.
- Nobody I ever partied with had a problem with it.
- Did BCNMs in the Jawshan with no problems.
- I don't intend on leveling NIN, SAM, or any other jobs that can use the Haubergeon over Hauberk past 37.

So it wasn't being lazy, it was more of an economy-driven choice.

I wasn't directing it at you 100%, but talking in general. I was more talking about present day. I do feel for you, as I bought my haub when I first started playing as a SAM for like 7.2 mil or so. (Even if everything that was farmable for gil was also higher in price, I'm not sure if it was a 1:1 ratio, though.)

Oh yeah, I didn't take it that way either, don't get me wrong. I was just showing the thought process in my choices.

Plus, the women thought the Tarutaru is cute in the Jawshan, as opposed to the "this makes my belly look like a beer gut" Haubergeon.

Reminds me of this time, years ago when I was first levelling BRD. I was partied with this WHM, who did not (as it turns out, after getting to Kuftal and having a few bad experiences with Cockatrices) have Stona at level 68.

She was a QCDN personality at the time too, if I recall. Kateeverlast or something, forget the name exactly.

It's not limited to people nobody's heard of, and it's not limited to lowbies. All the same, all you can really do is explain the importance and the relative ease of getting whatever the Important Missing Thing is, and hope the person isn't an idiot and that they'll actually listen to you.

If they don't, then feel free to ditch them!

Ninja: Wait, might have read too fast, was that directed at me?

No not at you, apologies for not using the quote button. Directed at Mirewen.

so i think the OP did the right thing dont perpetuate the ignorance just walk away.

Never said otherwise. If you don't like agree with a party, by all means leave. Throwing such a fuss about a Qufim Island party I think is a bit premature. All low level parties suck ass the majority of the time. Newbs, inexperienced players, asshats, all of these things abound. When you have that great party of people that get along, or know what they are doing, and you hit great xp/hour you notice it much more.

The 66RDM i mentioned earlier who did have have barfira, and I died several times while tanking because of, you didn't see me flame him? Or call him gimp? Even though at lvl 66 that is UNACCEPTABLE. I had an LS member bring me the scroll, and I gave it to him. No fuss, no name calling, no berating him. He used the scroll, and at the next bio break, warped. His embarrassment was probably more than enough than causing a scene.

Yesterday, we had a party in Garlaige. Difficult at 32-33, but not impossible. Our thief was very inexperienced and missed SATA 9/10 time. Myself and 2 other players explained we were THF's between 66-75, and offered pointers. We found out he wasn't even using a macro for SATA, but manually selecting if from the job abilities. We showed him a macro, and explained what the JA's do, and why Viper Bite is a more viable alternative to stack with SATA than Gust Slash or the AoE Cyclone. By the end of the party he was doing great damage, and will hopefully continue to improve. None of us got pissed, even though the exp/hour was horrible at first. We put up with it, and eventually it turned out great, and he learned something. Yes I blow up on people sometimes, but mainly because they are dickfaces, or don't want help or advice, and not because I think they are "gimp" or they "suck."

Actually, when I started playing I always carried spells 5 lvls above what I was currently at and gear for my next lvl. Not everyone likes to fuck up a party from sheer ignorance. I like my high horse, it makes it easier to avoid dumbasses.

Ignorance /= dumbass. It means you are unaware, don't know any better. Why not explain to the new player that this may be a viable alternative to become asshurt about it until the situation devolves so far into argument? And I'm glad that you were the paragon of newb excellence, congratulations on being so prepared and praiseworthy.

lol you make it sound like this game is actually hard to be good at. Buying a spell isn't being smart. CG YOU BOUGHT A SCROLL! It's about not fucking up an entire party. When I first started playing I was on PS2 without a computer at home. All this talk about going to sites for information... really? Really is it that hard to go to an NPC/AH when you lvl to see if you can learn anything new? Or buy new gear? How about taking time to learn before lvling. Asking a mentor. Aquainting yourself with the game. I'm such a horrible person for expecting people to not suck.

Yea, there can be noticeable differences between players of the same gear/spells. 2 separate pt's in the mire the last 2 days, both scholar healers, almost exactly geared the same. One I was always silena'd, even when the imp did AoE silence 2-3 times in a row, the other I would still be silenced after the fight, and would have to ask for it again. That's skill.

I never said you were a horrible person, just that perhaps you don't remember what it was like. Again I'm glad that you were a knowledgeable and competent new player. We could only hope that all strive to be so. If this is his first MMORPG, or even a WoW player coming to FFXI, most have the mentality that to level is all you do to be better. All you have to do is leave parties with PL's, or not accept invites from low rank's, even though they may merely have switched nations. In the end they'll be the ones 2-3 levels higher. Might they still suck? Yes. Could you have stayed and offered help? Yes. Should a fuss be risen because of something that is most likely going on in other parties at the exact same second? No.

In the context of your quote, this is how I interpreted it. If you meant otherwise, forgive me.

Glad so many people are ok with someone not only missing one of the cheapest basic spells, but that the guy actually lied about not having it in the first place. GG.
1. Reread. The WHM never once stated that he/she had barfira, that the mob was silenced, I assume misunderstood the need for barfira thinking it was a BLM type mob and was casting fire spells probably. Then when informed about Bomb Toss, did not think barfira effected bomb toss. Never once did they lie, just uninformed.

2. Berating someone does more harm then good. "You'll get more bees with honey," remember that? It's mostly true. If you treat people with an ounce of dignity and respect, instead of treating them with a cold, bitter response, they'll be more receptive to change. It's that simple. If I started our conversation with "you dumb, noob ass piece of shit, die in a fire for being so damn stupid" and then demanded you listen to me, would you? Or if I said, "listen Mirewen, you've been doing a good job as our healer, but in the future, could you buy barfira for bomb toss, it really reduces the damage taken", would you listen to me then? If the option is open, a little civility will go a long way. But if the bridge is already burned, call it as you see it.

Not to put you on the spot Mirewen, just trying to give a good example. I'm not trying to say this is entirely acceptable, but it's understandable and that I'd be willing to put a little effort and restraint in order to make sure that person improves and knows what's expected for future parties.

So.. finally he gets to us, and I asked for barfira, as I don't have it yet.... He didn't cast it. So I asked again. He said "I silenced it"... So i started explaining that bomb toss is a tp move, not magic. Then he said "It's not fire"... So then I said "Uh.. It's fire based."... And I normally wouldn't care.. and it wouldn't bother me, but what came next really pissed me off. He finally said "I don't have barfira"... And I wouldn't have been so annoyed if he didn't say two wrong things to try to get out of saying he didn't have it.

Convenient that he was "mistaken" about whether it was a cast or an ability when he didn't have the spell. I'm guesing if the party said "Oh, ok then nevermind" to his "It's not fire" then everything would have been peachy and he would never have had to divulge that he was infact missing the spell and he probably did know it was a fire based TP move.

Rather than "walk away" from ignorance, taking solace in knowing you at least attempted to guide someone into the correct answer is better.

It shows you care, and you wouldn't be showing that expressly to the person to whom you'd be giving advice. It shows droves about your character versus theirs to the other party members, who might just end up running HNMs/Sky/etc with you later on.

These.
Listen. I hear reason.

Again, I'm glad that you don't care/remember what it was like when you were new. This is not the easiest game to get into, even with resources like wiki/alha/bg/whatever. Perhaps he was a bit embarrassed when the spell was asked for, so he avoided the question? Get off your fucking high horse. OMG A SHITTY QUFIM PARTY, ITS THE FUCKING END OF THE WORLD!!!

Actually with those resources you can find out just about anything you want to about this game.

I'm sorry but along with the basic tier cures, regen, -nas, and raise

not having barfira is not acceptable since you fight at many different camps versus goblins in the trip to 37, i wouldn't care so much if you didn't have any other -ra than barfira (except barwatera).

Google is out there, people. You can't really argue mis-information at this day and age with something like google around. I'm all for new players that need to have certain things explained to them, for example Barfira on bomb toss i didn't know about until well after i was done xp'ing on gobs.

But saying that they don't know informational sites exist is just silly. Type in FFXI information in the google bar will get you an endless amount of help.

FFXI main page, Alla, ffxiwiki, and then two gilselling sites.
Which makes me wonder why SE doesn't go after IGE and coolingame (sp?) considering they're both in the top ten search results.

Never said you couldn't find information, I said even WITH resources, this game can be a daunting task for a new player.

I don't think anyone said that either. But you yourself mentioned that you weren't aware of Barfira until much later. As is now the case with the new player.

With FFXIclopedia, that's definitely not an excuse. Not to mention BG, which has even more information than ffxi.wikia.com (just the fact that it's not as easy to find, but searching isn't exactly hard anyway). And, you can even make an account there and post a topic asking certain questions, just as you can here.

The whm got the CoP cs upon zoning, but I didn't say anything.. Who cares?

What would you say? AHAHH NOOB LOLZ NO SEA OMGZ ?? He's rank 1 and I'm guessing at lv 20 was most likely his first time ever to Jeuno.

So I disbanded.

Suddenly I got spammed with tells. I'm not saying it wasn't expected considdering I disbanded without notice, but I was not happy about the fact that the "new" whm was basically unable to level certain skills involved in curing party members because of the plvl. We didn't even need a damn plvl. We had a whm/blm, rdm/whm, and a dnc/??. We had a crap ton of cures.

Soo if I'm to understand this, you have 3 support jobs - whm rdm and dnc all that can toss cures, AND a PL, and you're throwing a hissyfit because the whm doesn't have Barfira. Yea that's not retarded at all......

If I may add my two cents in here, I, in the interest of helping new players, keep my mentor flag up at all times. I get a certain amount of satisfaction out of helping other ppl get acclimated to FFXI, as it can be rather hard, especially if they haven't found a good LS to give them pointers and the information like the wiki, etc. All it takes is a bit of patience and some understanding and you end up with good people to play with and good exp down the road at some point, usually.
