I just want to say that the poll options are slanted.
(sorry, I didn't read all 20 pages, so this may be repeated)
Intelligent design does not necessarily preclude evolution. The idea that evolution might have been the process of intelligent design has been around since about 5 minutes after the two ideas began to coexist.
Faith is not stupid. All of science is based on faith in the principle, "The Future will be like the Past." Dead serious. Everyone has faith in something. Some people have faith in their friends, some have faith in their countries, some have faith in their linkshells
, and some have faith in some higher power.
To say that "religion" -- that is, when multiple people share a faith regarding the metaphysical underpinnings of the universe -- is all myth or merely appeases stupid people, is, in my book, a very narrow-minded approach.
People who want to call christians idiots should consider whether the following principles are idiotic:
People should not do harm to each other, but treat each other well.
Forgiveness is good and powerful in human lives.
People should take care to respect the beliefs of others, whether they are correct or not. (don't call foul; it's in Corinthians 12)
For those who want to bicker about the holiness code of the old testament (laws regarding selling your daughter or purifying mildewed clothes, among other things): nearly all christians do not use these principles. If you think this is hypocritical, consider that they have a religious justification for this in the idea that Jesus came to create a new law.
I don't mean to be preachy, but Christianity gets a lot of flack, and there are a lot of good people who get it right, in my opinion. People don't attack the views of buddhists categorically, or those of hinduism.
If you don't believe in the force and being that I call God, that's fine with me. Just don't pretend that you're being smooth and intelligent and that I'm a blind child being led along by a myth that makes everything bright and sunny. I don't mean this angrily; it's just become fashionable to say, "I'm an atheist therefore I am smarter than anyone who believes in something." This can be as much of a thoughtless supplication as a churchgoer with unexamined beliefs.
