Extremes - Dead
Jack Thompson said:
Attorney and anti-gaming activist Jack Thompson has been hitting the media circuit with a vengeance recently, due to the tragic events that took place earlier this week on the campus of Virginia Tech. Yesterday, Thompson issued a press release ( http://www.gamealmighty.com/story-individual/story/Jack_Thompson_on_VA_Tech_Shootings_and_Games/ ) predicting that video games would be found to have been a contributing factor in the shootings. The Washington Post stated that the shooter, Cho Seung-Hui, had reportedly been "a fan of violent video games, particularly Counterstrike, a hugely popular online game published by Microsoft, in which players join terrorism or counterterrorism groups and try to shoot each other using all types of guns." Although it seems that the Post has since removed that statement, as well as any references to Counterstrike or any other video game, from its article, it was more than enough to get fuel Thompson's fire.

This afternoon, Game Almighty received an email from Thompson, which included an open letter sent to Microsoft CEO Bill Gates. The letter reads as follows:

April 18, 2007

Bill Gates

Microsoft

1 Microsoft Way

Redmond, WA 98052 Via Fax and e-mail

Dear Mr. Gates:

On Monday, April 16, at 3:10 pm, I was a guest, as I often have been in the past, on the Fox News Channel. News anchor Bill Hemmer asked me to profile the Virginia Tech rampage killer. I did so, noting that until that day the worst school massacre in world history was at the hands of Robert Steinhaeuser, who literally trained on the Microsoft on-line, hyper-violent shooter game, Counterstrike. I mentioned your company’s game by name. I explained that the rehearsal for such a massacre is key to being able to pull it off, as efficiently as Cho, whose name we didn’t even know at the time. Cho and Steinhaeuser were able to do what they did the first time because it was not the first time. This is why the military uses this same virtual reality simulation to train soldiers to want to kill and how to kill calmly, as the witnesses of Cho said he did.

Sure enough, last night I was doing a west coast radio interview when the host said to me, "Mr. Thompson, you are right. The Washington Post is reporting right now the following:

‘Several Korean youths who knew Cho Seung Hui from his high school days said he was a fan of violent video games, particularly Counterstrike, a hugely popular online game published by Microsoft, in which players join terrorism or counterterrorism groups and try to shoot each other using all types of guns.’"

I thus went back on the Fox News Channel, and Bill Hemmer and I explained not only that I was right about your game figuring in the Virginia Tech massacre but also that the Washington Post excised the above excerpt from the story this morning. That is yet another story. The bad news for the Post however is that you can still get the excised excerpt at http://www.washingtonpost.com/...AR2007041700563_3.html?hpid=topnews. Thus, the cat is out of the bag, and his paw prints are still on the bag. Is this a great Internet, or what?

As you know, I similalry [sic] went on NBC’s Today Show with the DC Beltway Sniper still unidentified and at-large a few years ago and told Matt Lauer and the nation that the triggerman would most likely be a teen video gamer trained on a sniper video game. The tarot card was a clue, but there were other clues. I was right, as Malvo trained on your Microsoft game, Halo. NBC reported that three months later, and it was part of the criminal trial of Malvo.

Mr. Gates, your company is potentially legally liable the harm done at Virginia Tech. Your game, a killing simulator, according to the news that used to be in the Post, trained him to enjoy killing and how to kill. You knew five years ago that your on-line game, Counterstrike, so clearly figured in the massacre by a student in Erfurt that the event and the game impacted the race for Chancellor in Germany at the time!

Yet, here you are, five years after "Erfurt," still marketing Counterstrike. having done nothing to disable the server(s) for this mass murder simulator, and it looks like "Virginia Tech" is a consequence. There’s more going on in the world than Vista. Just ask the bereaved Virginia Tech families.

Mr. Gates, pull the plug on Counterstrike today, or do we need more dead to convince you? "Virginia Tech" was the 9-11 of school shootings, and it appears Microsoft is in the middle of it, in more ways than one.

Regards, Jack Thompson

Unfortunately, there are at least two glaring issues to be found in Thompson's latest letter. First, as mentioned earlier, The Washington Post article referenced by Thompson has since been edited to remove any references to Counterstrike and any other video game. Second, while Microsoft did publish the Xbox version of Counterstrike, the game was originally developed by Valve Software, with Vivendi Universal handling the publication of the game on the PC.

Game Almighty is still trying to convince Thompson to share his views with our readers. While the offer to speak remains open, there has been no further word from Thompson on if he will accept.

What is this guys problem? Video games don't cause violence. I've become more violent from watching network television and the news mostly, reading as well. Whenever anyone calls this loser out on his claims, he doesn't respond. I e-mailed him early. My friend guarantees me he won't read it but his secretary would probably, I say as long as someone reads it.

His e-mail is on his site and its: [email protected]

Microsoft doesn't even make counterstrike. I also remember hearing that the guy didn't play video games, but that was second-hand, so I'm not sure how valid that is.

What the guy is doing is reprehensible, he's taking a tragedy and twisting and exploiting it to push his opinion; despite a complete lack of proof and with no concern whatsoever for the feelings of the families who lost someone.

Someone should throw a suit at him for emotional damages from pushing his agenda through the death of their child.

LOL! Kinda funny because on MSN there is a video where they interviewed the Suite mate of the VT shooter, and in the interview the interviewer who I'm convinced is not only extremely annoying from watching some of his other interviews but is also a complete idiot kept asking the suit mate if the shooter played video games and repeatedly asked him if he played counterstrike. Finally after he asked the kid like 5 times if he played video games and after that no if he played counterstrike (um duh he doesn't play video games so how would he play counterstrike?) he finally got off the subject.

Then I read this and it made me laugh. Possibly what made that guy keep asking about counterstrike I thought it was odd he kept asking about that specific game.

In the same interview the suit mate said he watched wrestling on Friday nights. (I don't know how people watch wrestling anyways.) So maybe we should ban wrestling too, oh and cars lots of people die in cars, oh and the INTERNET let's just BAN LIFE SOUND GOOD?

He actually does respond to some e-mails, but the amount of hate mail he gets are probably all deleted before their read. He also will attack the sender regardless of if it's intellegent statement or a dumb one. Thompson is a horrible human being and I really wish they'd disbar him.
He's also quite pathetic. I don't know how many people have read gamepolitics.com but he used to be a HUGE troll there before they screened all the posts there. He'd be constanly banned and make up new screennames. That's also where the "Flowers for Jack" campaign was born. His response to even that shows how little intrest he has in the opinions of gamers.

I'm actually surprised. This dude came out of nowhere (I could've sworn he was still reeling from his Bully defeat), and cries out video game violence mear hours after the Cho killed himself (if I have my facts right). He's a fox.

But, he's old. Maybe all this stressing over nothing will hit his heart or something and he'll fall over dead. Once can always hope...

if he dies, he will somehow find a way to let us all know he died because of a video game

"Doctors were too busy playing Counter-Strike and Grand Theft Auto instead of Trauma Center, like Counter-Strike and Grand Theft Auto being hyper-realistic killer training simulators, a hyper-realistic surgical simulator."

Jack Thompson jerks off playing Phoenix Wright.

"I object! Oh... oh god..."

I was amused to read Rush Limbaugh was talking down a member of his audience who was spouting off about violent video games being involved in the shooting. Rush pointed out that millions of people play those games and they don't turn into psychotic killers. I guess it's true about a stopped clock being right twice a day.

If Jack really wanted to be taken seriously then maybe he should do a little research or play these so-called violent video games. Me and the majority of my friends have all grown up playing video games, and none of us want to go out and kill people. Why can't people take responsibility for their actions instead of blaming stupid things like video games? I mean really, what happened to him to make him hate video games so much?

*flashback of Jacks early childhood*
Jack: Mommy! Mommy! I want a video game for Christmas!
Jacks Mom: YOU CAN'T HAVE A VIDEO GAME, THEY'RE MADE FOR DEVIL CHILDREN! *throws 50 gajillion copies of GTA and CS at him like ninja stars* You're not a devil-child, are you Jack?
Jack: *crying and bruised* No mommy. *sniffsniff*
*end flashback*

I mean, good God, can't people just find something fun to do that doesn't harm other people and have others not keep crying wolf?

I have done some research into the field of video game related violence, and there are many factors contributing to people who commit crimes and play violent video games. Many times it deals with someone who was mentally unstable to begin with or an influential child who's parents don't care and let's them do what they want. The list goes on and on, but the truth is there is no real correlation to school shootings and violent video games. I mean, even if a person was going to hurt people and they didn't have to play video games to learn how to shoot a gun or build a pipe bomb.

*sarcasm* See how great our country can be? We have all these laws that provide us with the freedom to train terrorist how to fly airplanes into buildings, for teenagers to build pipe bombs and kill their schoolmates, and carry on the religion of Scientology. *end sarcasm* Ok, so the last one didn't fit as well as the others. Meh, deal.

But tis late for me, time for bed or I'd rant some more.

Can't they just finally take away his license to practice law already?
I mean come on, when there's hardly anyone, if anyone at all, that will associate their organizations with you, and they're on the same side of the spectrum, you're obviously a loon.

Wouldn't surprise me if he blamed surgeons for "not doing the best they could, because their attention spans are so small they can't focus" or some other BS. Especially because playing video games 2+ hours a week has been shown to make better surgeons. Especially Super Monkey Ball 2.

Maybe we should help Jack in his quest to prove that games kill people and put a few N64 cartridges in a doubled up sock and beat him to death with it. Cause right now, thats the only way a game will actually kill someone.

Why does anyone give this prick any type of credibility. How does any home console game/PC game "teach children to kill"? What, are they going to go outside, point their controller/mouse at someones head and go "Bang!"?

All a game like CounterStrike or other FPS's do is show you to "aim for the head"... no shit aim for the head. "Oh, but it teaches kids how to get around and move like a killer would" yeah only one problem with that. No campus I've heard of is laid out like Dust2 or De_Aztec. I mean common holding a gun in your hand or pulling the trigger of a gun has nothing to do with holding a controller, moving a mouse on a desktop or anything like that.

Great, some psycho kills a bunch of people and now any and all games that the kid "might" have played will come into question. Now what if he only played say, Minesweeper or Solitaire all day? What would this jackoff have to say about it then? I mean, if i knew a kid was going to a technical college and he only played Minesweeper when so many other games were available i'd be a little bit cautious of him then the other, oh 90% of college kids who play PC games wouldn't you? "Oh no! He plays minesweeper quick make sure he didn't lay any land mines while all the other kids went to spring break!"

People like Thompson make me sick.

He would talk to friends or family members, until he found someone that had a game rated T or up, and then use that game as "evidence"

Its really idiotic how he says Microsoft is the cause of the shooting. Thats almost like a parent telling an emo kid that he cant go to the coffee shop to read poetry, and because of it he kills himself, then authorities accuse the parent of the childs death.

Millions of people play sports, and some of these are VERY much more realistic and violent than any video game, simply because youre actually there. People dont blame the killings of sports players on the sports, but instead on instability and/or mental problems. OJ for example.

One of the more realistic 'sports' is paintballing or airsoft sports. Look at that shit, you actually have guns and are shooting each other, lol. Way to go, Jack "Dumbass" Thompson

Edit: I must say though, if the guy did commit his crime because of a video game, he must have been the one playing and recording the Super Mario mod that Devifoxx posted... Im sure anyone would be pissed after playing that

isnt that the guy that tried to stop people from playing GTA

but in reality made more people play it?

Go "advertise" ffxi and see what happens

QFT

thats exactly what i did too

besides roll my eyes

ps. if someone can learn how to shoot a real gun from playing a video game...ill be amazed

pps. if you've been watching the news, he sent a package with pictures and a video where he goes on a rant and all this other happy bullshit, if u listen to what he says and can stand his monotonic voice you'll realize that he's just an emo kid, i blame emo music
