Japanese Movies

Folks always love Spirited Away, but personally, I prefered Howls moving Castle.

Yea, Howls is above Spirited, but I still prefer Princess Mononoke over it. Giant wolves and lots of blood.

All the movies every ones mentioned are awesome. Id like to add Banquet of the Beasts and Visotor Q. 2 completly fucked up movies.
Also, non JP, but The Host, Korean horror movie is one of the best movies ive ever seen, in any laungauge.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind :D

Howl's so sexy though. Tough choice.

Meh, lemme broaden it then to Far Eastern flicks.

If by scary you mean frightening, they aren't.
If by scary you mean fucking weird, it's genetic.
Japan's "The Ring" series and "Juon" (The grudge) put's the American ripoffs to shame in terms of scariness. And those are just the ones that are well known in the states. I don't think I've ever seen an American horror movie that freaked me out nearly as much as Juon.

But I don't really watch much horror and the only one's I've ever really paid attention to are the hollywood ones, which tend to be watered down.

I really dug Laputa. Everytime I ever went up to sky I always wanted to yell "shiiittaaaa!"

Mononoke was great, but I liked Spirited away better. They're all great. I can't really choose a favorite from any of them.

For far east films, Hero is still baller as well as fearless. Warriors of heaven and earth is sweet. Sex is Zero is lol, basically a korean vs of american pie. Tom yum goong and Ong Bak were sick too, Tony Jaa is a beast. I also can't wait for the Battle of Red Cliff to come out, sounds sweet.

The Eye wasn't a Japanese film, it was a Hong Kong release. Good flick though. Recently I seen 2 movies, both of which had the same actor Yuya Yagira.

Dare mo Shiranai (Nobody Knows)

Hoshi ni natta Shonen (Shining Boy & Little Randy)

Both movies are dramas, and the actor is pretty young. I can see him becoming a prominent Japanese actor in the next 5-7 years. I still believe his best performance was in "Nobody Knows" and I recommend this one the most. The latter film is more of a family drama. Both movies can be found as a region 2 DVD with english subtitles. I think "Nobody Knows" has been released in the U.S., although I am not sure. It's definitely worth watching. I'll post more movies later if I deem them worthy.

Ah also, might I point out House of Flying Daggers.

THAT was a real good movie.

Now I just have to put in the Japanese (pretty sure it's a Japanese movie) version of Shaolin Soccer.

Visitor Q was probably one of the biggest "WTF" Japanese movies ever seen lol. I had to actually get it again and watch it with a friend when he didn't believe me when I told him about it.

Don't think I saw it mentioned, but the original Pulse was awsome. Even if you saw the US version, watch it, it's worth it.

Itchi the Killer
Audition
One Missed Call (really good)
One Missed Call 2
Basically anything directed by Takashi Miike is gonna be good. I haven't watched any of his Yakuza movies cause it's just not my thing.

Marebito
Reincarnation
The Locker is also another good one.

Most of these are horror movies by the way.
