Cubs quit bein a prick. We all hear what you're sayin and for the most part you're right, but that's no reason to keep the gil that was sent in an honest error.
Shit you act like you've never done something like that before, and in the same situation i guarantee you'd give the gil back. And what he said was he "might" give the gil back and 11mil is a pretty big "might".
Fact is, there is no excuse for gankin the man's money after he clearly noted he goofed and politely asked for it back. That's what i like to call Bullshit and i think he had every right to flame him. Personally i think he can eat an 11mil DICK
This from a guy who uses the term 'jewish' to describe Karahan?
I've lost gil before on the AH by being careless. Over half a million on my Amemet +1, a few hundred k here and there because I moved the cursor over too much or I didn't watch while I was bidding. In none of those cases have I even attempted to contact the seller to get it back - I considered it moron tax for me not paying attention.
If I were in Karahan's shoes, would I give the gil back? Honestly, probably not. It would really depend on how the person contacted me and asked for it back. If they're going to be nice about it (and most importantly, not try to guilt me into it) I'd consider giving back about half. If the /tell is something like:
"Hay I bid 2 much on ur item gimme back the rest" or some kind of veiled threat about trying to ruin my reputation based on a mistake they made in the first place, you can fucking bet your life they'd never see 1 gil of it back.
And really, that's all this FB post is trying to accomplish - Lanien's a really good guy and he's helped me out in the past, and I do honestly hope he can either get this gil back or work his way back to being as rich as he was. But especially now, all this is trying to do is smear Karahan's name until he's gotten enough nasty /tells from random people and/or shit on enough by this that he now has to 'save face' and return 11 million gil that he doesn't have anymore. And all of that is due to no fault of his own.
When I first read this, I thought of it from the perspective of any random 'average' player (not saying that Karahan is or isn't, just trying to make a point here.) The average player without much in the way of craft skills or ultra-successful farming technique. The average player who looks at a 1 million gil item and thinks it's totally out of their reach.
Then that 'average' player wakes up one morning with 11 million gil falling into their lap. Now me, personally, I'd take that gil and invest it. Put it into my crafts so it can come back 10-fold or more. But like a lot of normal people who get a spot of good fortune, they went out and blew it on luxury stuff. Sure, it went quickly, but for most of the 'average' server population, a PCC, Balmung and Cluster are pretty nice things to say you own.
Now, after all that shopping's done, the person responsible for your good fortune asks to hand it back. It's a moral dilemma. Do you basically put yourself back at square one and leave your newfound fortune behind to 'do the right thing?'
Aside: Would there have been a Good Times post praising Karahan for returning the gil? Obviously hindsight is 20/20, but honestly I doubt it.
I can see why someone would say yes, here's everything back. Maybe they believe in karma and think that this return of fortune will result in even more good things coming their way. Maybe they fear flameboard posts and their reputation being dragged through the mud. Maybe they're just the kind of person who drops gold coins into Salvation Army buckets during the Christmas season and they rescue kittens from trees and save a bunch of money on their car insurance by switching to Geico.
And I can also see why they'd say no. Maybe they believe this is carma swinging back their way for all the giving they've done in the past. As hard as it is for someone to mis-bid and lose 11 million, it's just as hard to have been given that gil and then have to give it all back. It may be five, even ten times more gil than they've ever seen in their lives. And they may WANT to give it back, but can't, because they've spent it. And maybe they do plan on giving it back - or maybe they're paying lip service to get someone off their back.
I think Karahan is going to have to give the gil back eventually, because there are enough people that blame him for being the random benefactor of someone's 4AM server hiccup/mistake. Regardless, anyone who wants to call out someone who is simply unable or unwilling to compensate for said hiccup/mistake is at least jumping to conclusions, and at worst needlessly demonizing.
