My friend brough something up today that kinda caught my attention. He was talking about how him and his LS were gonna go after Crimson-Toothed for the Carby Mitts, and we ended up on the topic of who was all coming along. He mentioned how everyone coming was either going to level SMN or has leveled SMN to an extent. We got on the topic of how I wouldn't level SMN past 10 without all the summons (including Fenrir), Carby Mitts, the element staves +1, Light Spirit, and the Austere Set waiting for me. (I realize it's a large list, but I just don't wanna be gimp)
So then he starts talking about one of the SMN guys that were coming along still needed the Mitts for himself. Then I found out he's level 70, and not only doesn't have the Mitts yet, also doesn't have Fenrir.

I just need some of the FFXI/QCDN veterans on here to leave an opinion on this. Would you consider that SMN to be lazy, gimped, selfish (for leveling without working for it), decent, respectable, or whatever.

I'm not flaming anyone, I just wanna know your opinions.

gimped is a term that only applies of said players setup fits what you personally think is below standard. is a SMN doesnt have fenrir, IMO, i dont consider him gimped. he's a privilage more or less, not a requierment.

a SMN is very limited on a party cause of the huge delay on our BP's. a 1 minute timer that covers all BP useage limits us in parties as a SMN and doesnt give us alot of opptions for SJ usage. which is why SMN's are boxed into being mini-WHM's. we are very good at the job given our generous MP supply and auto-refresh. but to be effective there is little else we can take as a sub. i've subbed blm in parties to test ots efectiveness and even though i had fun with my tiny nukes i felt a bit lacking (possibly cause i have subbed WHM most of my SMN carrear and wasnt used to blm sub).

No, the SMN job is not gimped if you don't have Fenrir, Carby Mitts, etc...

I have some of the things you point and they help (A LOT) but, they are not as important as air to breathe. When the SMN job was created most of this things you point weren't even created for said job. Even the almighty Fenrir Avatar was included as a quest later on.

My question is why is a job with only one cure ability that isn't even good looked at so much like a main healer? Why isn't RDM put up higher on the list of healers than a SMN? They actually get Cure spells. When I play my SMN again I have no plans on being a healer, I play WHM for that. I just don't get it.
