Makes Sense To Me

I think it's because if you have a drivers license and you drive...you come in contact with this stuff. <_<;

Oh, interesting. I don't so I guess I wouldn't know... though I find this reasoning a little iffy. There's always going to be idiots & jackasses on the road, no matter what language they speak. I'm guessing in Alabama there aren't that many people who ignore signs because they can't read them.

... just realized cost saved per year should have been $512,000 in my first post here (tests will always need to be printed no matter what language, the $250,000 should be taken out of the equation). Oh well.

I'll be more then happy to agree with you that there will always be idiots and jackasses on the road.

I concur with that, but I'd like them to automatically be able to communicate with the cop when he's pulled over.

Atleast I'm bigoted against intolerance, something inherently evil, rather than someone for something as trivial as how they communicate. Hell, what about those who can speak and read English, but feel much more comfortable or confident taking a test in their native tongue?

you don't seem very tolerant about others ideas

and you still haven't explained how wanting people in my state to speak English makes me racist... just because something is inconvenient doesn't mean you get to ignore it.

double post since you can't get your point right before you post. (may want to proof read then post)

and the reason you have them take the test in English is to prove they know English. not a hard concept.

Because, GBB, there is no requisite to live in America that states you must know English. That is why it's wrong. You could enlighten yourself a bit and learn some basic spanish, korean, or whatever other languages you need to deal with. I guarantee it's easier than everyone else needing to learn English. Also, my point was the same, I just added to it.

I think you mean "there is NO requisite" and you are correct there isn't. (again, may help if you proof read)

But there is also no requisite of being capable of sight to live in America either, those who do not have that ability are barred from driving though. I have no problem with you living here if you can't speak English, I don't want you driving on my roads though.

I was unaware that you personally bought every paved square inch of American roads, and they aren't funded by American taxes, some of which don't speak english.

Actually, there's no *prerequisite* of learning English to live in this country. And thank God.

Y'all shut up about racism before IMMA START PRESSIN CHARJES.

I personally paid for every road with my taxes same as every other legal resident, it's not surprising you hold my patriotism against me, btw blind people pay for those roads that they aren't allowed to drive on too.

and TG there is also no requisite... no one living here is required to learn English at any point.

Its not intolerant to expect someone to be able to actaully comprehend the signs on the road before getting a drivers license,

I don't care how anyone chooses to communicate, people could speak Klingon for all i care, but I don't think the burden should lay on the rest of the country to accommodate those who refuse to learn the language in which the rest of country operates in. you desire to speak, and read only a foreign language, and live in this country? fine, just don't expect others to bend over backward to accommodate you when inconveniences arise because of that desire. I'll tolerate all day, but its not my responsibility to accommodate.

I'm not going to go to japan and claim my human rights are being violated because everything isn't translated into English for me.

you're bigoted against what you PERCEIVE to be intolerance, which seems to be damn near everything.

I've made the point before, that a common culture is first built upon a common language.

And the more we coddle people, the longer it takes them to integrate, the more divided we, as a country, become.

Wow, okay, I'm done with you GBB. I can't believe you just dismissed the millions of people living here legally and pay taxes who don't speak any english. Honestly, stay living in whatever backwoods hellhole you currently do.

But I still think theres several very valid reasons to expect people to be able to read the print on signs on the roads.
Agreed, if everyone on the road were able to read the signs I'm sure it would easy people's safety concerns.

and thank you for coming in with an actual intelligent argument in opposition(its nice to have an actual civil discussion on the issue without name calling.)
tho i disagree, for one, I think your cost estimates are a bit conservative, you'd be surprised at what a stupid amount of money a government body can spend doing something very simple.

You're welcome ^^

You're also right about governments being retarded with money. I know that my town handles it as if it's grown on trees. As for the cost estimates, I know it could be more. It's just hard to give an accurate figure without knowing more about how things are conducted by the DMV there. The best thing I had going there was that it's cheap to print identical pieces of paper in large quantities, but as it turns out that's not relevant since the tests would be printed no matter what language they're in.

I also did think of one other reason for keeping the tests as they are, though I don't know how much it applies to Alabama. When I was a kid my Dad's job required that we move to Canada. As such I'm sure he had to take a driving exam of some kind soon after we arrived. Because of language laws enforced in the country, that wasn't a problem.

But if there's a corporation that sometimes has employees move from a country speaking another language to Alabama and they haven't had much time to learn the language, it would certainly be a big (and admittedly expensive for the state) convenience for somebody who's had to make such a move to be able to take the test without having to worry about whether or not they'll be able to understand it.

rut roh, someone got angry, you do realize people get dismissed everyday for all sorts of privileges noone has a right to drive in this country, as such as many rules and roadblocks (everyone who isn't skaw see what I did there =D) can be put in place to make the roads a safer place.

Skaw this little imagination land that you seem to have cooked up for yourself where people who disagree with you live in, and I quote, "backwoods hellhole" seems to imply some sort of superiority complex. I would suggest therapy to be able to realize that just because people not only disagree with you doesn't mean they live in a certain place. The reason they disagree with you is because infact, you are wrong. So wrong in fact that when presented with facts, that instead of presenting counter facts like this

you go into a rage insulting peoples lifestyles/residence. As I've said to you before, insulting someone doesn't validate your point, it just makes you look desperate, and in this case pathetic. You can be done with me if you wish take your ball and go home cause we won't play by your rules, we'll persevere some way some how without your omnimpotence.

I think what we're forgetting here is that basically when you get a drivers license, it entitles you to drive what many states consider a deadly weapon. If you can't prove that you can read street signs that help you guide that deadly weapon, you shouldn't be driving it in the first place.

I really like Skaw. Pretty much said everything I would of (well maybe with a bit more intelligence and class, but what can you do?)

Yes, driving is a priviledge, but unless you do something wrong, nobody can tell you that you cannot drive, and speaking another language isn't a valid reason. The bigger problem is where does it stop? owning a business isn't a right. working isn't a right. riding a bus isn't a right.
