Man bursts into flames after Taser shock

read this this morning - amazing. just shows that messing with electricity is horseshit when taking body chemisty into account.

never been tased, but i hate the concept of them nonetheless.

I agree. What happened to pepperspray? Seems less dangerous and can still use the time to constrain them if they are being a nuisance.

Yea I agree with you guys. I think tasers are too dangerous.

I've said it before. You don't know what state physically the person being tasered is in. Weak heart among other variables could make it the wrong avenue altogether.

Ding ding ding. I have a repaired congenital heart defect that the last thing I'd want to have is be triggered upon a taser shock.

I completely understand that, but seriously, you're not dumb enough to run at officers with gasoline. Was it the best idea to taser him? Probably not. But please don't act like officers walk down the street and do this at random. More often than not people are really asking for it. I'd rather see officers safe, doing their job to protect us. Rather than random weirdos doing whatever the hell they want.

Again with the Officer defence. SOME officers are arrogant power hungry fucks. I kid you not; perhaps you should spend a year in my city and the surrounding cities here. They're so bored they often HARRASS people for no good reason. I've seen it with my own eyes and have been victim to it as well. Difference with me any many others is if they're going to give me hard time about nothing I'll give them damn good reason, other people will just allow the injustice to happen because they happen to be wearing uniforms.

Needless to say, tasers are dangerous and who's to say all officers have/practice common sense.

Yeah but they can do that without tasers too. Overall I think tasers make it safer for officers, and if you don't wanna get tasered, stay clear of officers...bro D:

They hunt you down! Actually I have been stopped on my way to a friends at night and searched on the street strictly because I was young, I suppose. I was walking alone, instead of them asking if I was okay walking alone they assumed I was up to no good. I gave them quite a bit of lip while obeying their demands. They had no right to search me but because they wore uniforms and apparently it was a slow night why not try to intimidate a young female.

I have little trust for officers, my experiences have been mostly negative. Again it's my city and the surrounding cities. There's not enough crime apparently for them to worry about.

Had I really given them a hard time about their lack of reason for the harrassment and they carried a taser you never know, they may have used it and made up some bullshit excuse as to pulling it out. They've done THAT too. I've been lied about by cops too.

Sorry I'll drop it.

Tasers are a dangerous option. I still think rubber bullets would be better.

cause it was totally the body chemistry, not the gasoline he doused himself with.

You're right, and while I know plenty of officers, and definitely want their own safety on top priority, I do have to point out:

SOME officers are arrogant power hungry fucks.

There are some people, who like in every other line of work, do not deserve the position they are placed in.

cause it was totally the body chemistry, not the gasoline he doused himself with.

I apologize, I mis-read the article early this morning and did not know he'd doused himself in fuel, just that he was "brandishing" the bottle of fuel at the officer. Even with this, it doesn't seem like he doused himself (unless he actually did) - he was sniffing the gas and getting high, and therefore he had the fumes all on and around him. With gasoline, the vapor is more flammable than the liquid itself, so it's likely that just enough spark hit him to set him alight.

It's unfortunate, but both people are at fault for the man's burns; one because of his ignorance to basic physics and chemistry (electricity+gas fumes = BAD) and the other's ignorance to his own welfare (gas fumes+lungs = BAD).

Wrong again TG. They were sniffing glue, not gasoline. He doused himself in the gasoline and was carrying a lighter. How did this story about an idiot turn into a police violence discussion. Take your tin hats off people.

1.) Sitting around sniffing glue.
2.) Dousing yourself in gasoline.
3.) Carrying a lighter while charging police.

I can't believe the police tazed this guy![/sarcasm]

I don't think they should have tazered him. Not because I believe tazering is dangerous (although, I do) but because of the gasoline. They could have hurt themselves as well.

In all fairness the report earlier read that he'd been sniffing the gasoline. Looks like it's been changed.

I will agree with you TG that some officers shouldn't be in their position, but that's not the majority imo. Seems silly to me to not allow things like tasering because of a select few that might abuse it. Obviously the same could be said for their guns, etc etc. It's the individuals that need to be weeded out of the system and sadly it'll never be perfect. That being said I don't think we all need to be overly paranoid and assume anyone who is in a uniform is automatically a horrid person out to get you. That mentality just makes me laugh, I'm personally thankful to know if I need an officer I can call and they'll be there. From my experience you get as much respect as you give.

Sounds like a Darwin Award winner to me, although it was only partially his stupidity at dousing himself with gasoline that killed him. The cop provided the spark.

Just to throw in with the discussion, I'm coming down against Tasers myself these days. You read too many stories about cops using them on people who aren't doing shit to deserve it because they're told the weapon is "safe." I say they should stick to guns. At least then they're not so quick to use them on someone.

While it's unfortunate he died... he had his chance to act reasonable.

"Airport security called the Mounties for assistance after an unidentified man began pounding on windows and throwing chairs and computer equipment in the customs area shortly after arriving on an international flight at 1:30 a.m., Richmond RCMP Sgt. Pierre Lemaitre told CBC News.

"We arrived and tried to calm the man," Lemaitre said. "We tried through gestures to get him to put his hands down on the desk … to no avail."

When he ignored orders to calm down, police used a stun gun on the man. "

Should the officers have to take a monitor to the face, or a chair to the head to defend themselves or others? Why is it people only care about the 'victims'? They gave him a chance to be reasonable, when he wouldn't they took action. It's too bad he died but if you don't want to take the chance with being tasered, don't act out and be unreasonable.

Do you not think that we hear more about the bad than about the good regarding the use of tasers? Use a gun or a taser on the idiot running at the police with gasoline? Who cares lol, how do we even focus on the police in that story at all.

I don't think they should have tazered him. Not because I believe tazering is dangerous (although, I do) but because of the gasoline. They could have hurt themselves as well.

If he was carrying a lighter (while already doused in gasoline), surely he'd be more of a danger to the police if not tazered? Whatever they did, short of shooting him, someone was going to go on fire; best case scenerio, he set himself on fire or got tazered and went on fire himself. Worst? They didn't tazer him, he ran into a group of cops and set himself alight. I'd tazer that fucker every day of the week :spiteful:
