MMA

Size is never a good judge for strength comparison... waaaay too many variables. And that's considering everyday guys and gals. You can be a 325lb walking troglodyte but if you don't know how to throw a punch your mass and muscles are useless.

I'm still confused about your Alves comparison, he weighed in at 178 for UFC 100 ;p

If it is past fights in which you refer, well that's not his fault. UFC should have made him cut weight or forfeit if he wasn't going to meet the requirements. It's not Lesnars fault he's a monster. He IS a massive structure. No doubt he's benched for years and years to help contribute to his weight, it was a must for his wrestling career. But he started out a monster and just buffed. Again it's up to the UFC to set the standards and requirements for match ups.

I am bitter about Lesnar winning, but it's not because he won. lol as if that makes sense. Mainly it's what Zalt said, there are guys a hell of a lot more skilled and practiced in the MMA industry than Brock can ever hope to be. Funny thing, his size can also be a major downfall, MAJOR.

Brock got a shot way too early, as did Silva. Difference being Silva didn't need to prove himself, Dana was well aware that man was a force. Lesnar on the other hand comes from a different background and has little experience in anything MMA, so he should have been forced to go throw the rigorous training.

Okay, the weigh in isnt minutes before the fight, Its atleast a week in advance, and the time prior to weigh-ins they spend cutting water weight and basically dehydrating themselves just to make weigh ins, then in the week after they gain their weight back. If you watch the fight, or any fight, the commentators tend to mention what weight they actually fight at. Alves actual fight weight is closer to 200 lbs.

Yeah, Alves made weight at 170. If you are over weight the fight becomes a non title fight as in with the Silva vs Lutter fight. And yeah in the comments they said Alves is probably closer to 200, so 30 lbs over the cap. The heavyweight cap is 265 so even if brock was 300 thatd only be 35 over, a whopping 5 lb difference, however like Airou said Brock probably wasnt 300.

The difference being that you have a wider range of weights for heavyweight, being that Brock Weighed in at 265 where Mir Weighed in at 245. However thats not brocks fault, if anything its the UFCs fault for having a slack weight class, however thats how ever fight organization is. So if anything they need a superweight class of anything over say 240, or something along those lines. But when you look at it, the heavyweight division is already the smallest division people wise in the UFC so splitting it up into another smaller division wont really make anything better.

Also its funny to bring up Sylvia, considering he got his shit rocked by alot smaller guys several times (Including Frank Mir) and now is just a shitty fighter (lol ray mercer).

Edit: Also words from Dana White: 'He gets better everytime he fights. We all know frank is an amazing submission specialist and Brock did a good job to stay away from that. He may be one of the greatest heavyweights of all time.'

All that quote just shows is how Brock is the UFC's HW pictureboy. Brock is no where near the greatest HW of all time all he did was avoid the same mistake he made in his first fight.

.. July 10th he weighed 170 lbs and July 12th he weighed 200 or close to it? Seriously lol.

I only knew his weight because I heard it during the show... and I looked it up just now because you had me second guessing myself.

And about the Dana quote, he's so going to boast about his newest frat boy =)

Sorry Airou, you know I'm not picking at you, I was just thrown off by the comparison and I had to know whether I was hearing things... it happens sometimes with me so .. I second guess myself a lot.

I know there aren't many to choose from in the heavyweight division, and I don't want any more Tim Sylvias that's for damn sure. I suppose that all I've seen of Lesnar so far, so forgive me if I think he's been a waste thus far.

Yes

And no offense taken, i like having sports discussions without people like OMG U STUPEH IDIOT U WRONG!

People cut weight drastically, you should watch some intense Ultimate Fighter seasons. Its very dangerous and unhealthy and ive seen it and been part of it, but you gotta do it.

Hopefully Shane Carwin gets past Valasquez. I'm curious to see the two giants fight each other if it ends up being Carwin Vs Lesnar shortly afterwards. Then we can see how much skill Lesnar has (or doesn't have) when he goes against somebody comparable to his size.

By the way that Hendo KO was ridiculous haha. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RokbVscC5Y4

Silly boy, I have watched all the Ultimate Fighter Championships shows..some full seasons some partially =)

I know they cut weight really quick and yeah I know how they do it, I was... oh shaddup! lol

Shit man, he just wasn't over the cap when he fought, that was my only point sheesh.

The official weigh in is not the one they do the day before the fight. That one is just a show lol. Like Airou said its like a week before, then the fighters get back to their normal weights and get healthy for the fight. Shit, even in his post fight interview with Joe, GSP said he was back at his normal weight of 184/185. And look at how much bigger Alves was than him.

I understand they can gain weight back before the fight, I just can't understand how he could have put on nearly 30lbs in 2 days.

Cuting weight is done so drasticially at times, but they still only manage to drop 6-7 lbs a day and that's an extreme, gaining it back that quick I can't wrap my head around.

Even still, if he weighed in around his usual 190+ and GSP was 185.. there wasn't much of a difference, plus Alves isn't a brick wall quite like Lesnar. GSP wasn't likely to get trapped under him by weight alone right. Alves would of had to work hard at keeping GSP pinned.

I suppose if you guys said he was about 200lbs I'll just take your word for it... don't get used to that though!!

Yea Alves is huge compared to GSP but that didn't stop him now did it.

And I agree about the HW class being divided it's a free for all up there and there are not many in that class. Dana has said he plans to get Fedor over to fight Lesner. I was truly upset when he won but looking back over it you can't be mad at a guy that saw a opportunity and exploited it. Take Frank Mir for example he's one of the only guys that said you know what these big boys can't fight off there back and then went to BJJ only to dominate great, powerful HW's from the ground. Everyone has there angle Lesner did what he wanted to do he knew Mir wanted to keep the fight up and eventually take it to the ground. He was just out matched also Lesner is very new in the MMA world he seems invincible but let him fight a few ppl make some mistakes he has his own set actions he's not perfect ppl will exploit his weaknesses very soon. Or they won't and he will rule the HW for a very long time and make alot of money doing it either way will be exciting I wasn't on the Lesner train from the beginning, but he beat the only guy I think that had a chance of defeating him out right. He deserves a shot yea he got a shot really early and when ppl say he beat two great fighters I don't agree Heath Herring has been nothing but dissapointing in the UFC, and Randy was in his prime awhile back and was on a very long break. Frank Mir was the most legit fighter to fight him. It's funny I would like to see one of the lower standard ppl go up against him I don't think they will be scared to cause if they do succeed they will be a instant phenomenon if not they are just being defeated by the freak champion of UFC to me is a win/win situation.

He didn't lol. For the third time now the ACTUAL weigh in is more like a week or so before the fight. And Im not comparing Mir to Lesnars weight difference with
GSPs and Alves weight difference, im comparing Lesnars being over the weight cap by ~30 lbs to Alves being over his weight cap by ~30 lbs.

A few things when comparing Lesnar and Mir to Alves and GSP with the weight difference. GSP was about 20 lbs lighter while mir was atleast 30 doesn't make that much of a difference but you have to remember that GSP is one of the best P4P fighters in the world and his skills exceed Mir's by far so he had a much easier time dealing with the weight difference. Oh and I doubt we will see Fedor in the UFC for a few years if ever.

I read July 10th his weight was 170 lbs. That was 2 days before the fight, THATS why I said that. Shit.

Every article I've read says 'weight ins took place today..' and are time stamped July 10th.

I wouldn't have said it otherwise

The main reason they put on a lot of weight fast is because their bodies are really dehidrated, ie swetting themselves to death so after their weigh in they pile water into them and just soak it up like a sponge. I've done this a few times myself it's not nice.

Eor's right, it completely sucks. I remember trying to make weigh-in in a high school wrestling tournament. I turned my hotel room into a sauna, (I was wearing sweats, and covered in a garbage bag from head to toe) dehydrated myself so bad I couldn't move, my hand was shriveling to itself, and I ended up being hospitalized and not being able to weigh-in or wrestle. the speed with which a fighter can gain and drop rate is rediculous, and very very very unhealthy.

Oh I know the process is drastic. The only thing I have to base it on is watching The Ultimate Fighter seasons, and they would usually drop 7 lbs a day as an extreme, the average was like 5lbs. So I just can't imagine someone actually gaining over 20lbs in a couple days. lol

I.Just.Can't.Imagine!

But annnnyway. Like I said earlier I'll take your guysesesses word for it, I really don't have any personal experiences to draw from.

Snap, wiki is usually right and check out the 103 card.

Main Card:

* Light Heavyweight bout: Rich Franklin vs. Chuck Liddell
* Welterweight bout: Mike Swick vs. Martin Kampmann
* Lightweight bout: Efrain Escudero vs. Cole Miller
* Welterweight bout: Josh Koscheck vs. Frank Trigg
* Lightweight bout: Tyson Griffin vs. Hermes Franca

Undercard:

# Heavyweight bout: Mirko Filipović vs. Junior dos Santos
# Lightweight bout: Sean Sherk vs. Gleison Tibau[7]
# Lightweight bout: Rafael dos Anjos vs. Matt Wiman[8]
# Middleweight bout: Drew McFedries vs. Tomasz Drwal

Liddell gettin one more shot, Swick and Kampmann goin for the next shot at GSP, come back by Trigg and it looks like Jimm is right Cro Cop is coming back. Also according to UFC 104 gonna get Carwin and Velasquez and Lyoto is gonna take on Rua (which im guessing will be an easy win for lyoto).

So 101 is gonna be sick, 102 has some good knockout potential, 103 looks pretty stacked and 104 not to bad either. I thought the beginning of the year had some stacked cards but damn the goodness keeps on rollin.

Meh i dont like UFC103 from the looks of it too much, The Liddell Franklin gonna be a sick fight, as for GSP Contenders, lol i dont think it matters who wins either one will lose to GSP.

Id like to see Shogun Vs the Dragon though that could be nasty.

I for one though, am waiting for the next Ultimate Fighter Coaches battle. Rashad Evans and Rampage
