There's probably a very apparent reason for this...but why all the sudden interest in monk? Monk has been and always will be my favorite job...and I know that end-game LS's take a liking to monks..but why now of all times? Why not in 04-05, even earlier? Everytime I flag up and do searches on seeking people, I can guarantee there will be 4-6 monks searching...
So my question to you, Quetzalcoatl, is...
Why now?! :rtfm:

Monk has been a bandwagon job for a year now. The reason it wasn't bandwagoned at the beginning was people saw the low damage per hit and thought it sucked(lolbignumbers). But then someone fired up a parser and found out that monk was owning every other job in total damage per fight, so people started playing as it. Endgame shells like monks for their 1500+ Chi blasts every 3 minutes, which attracts the big number damage bandwagoners. Monk is also good for merit cannons, so some people bandwagon it for that reason. That and monks get the best belt in the game by far, and until then they have the second best DD belt which they get at 40.

Not everyone who's leveling the job is a bandwagoner though. There are people who genuinely like the job and not just because of numbers or because they'll get into endgame shells faster or get gear faster.

I've always had an appreciation for monks.

And...if I was to ever level monk. The sole reason would be that Tarus do a flip at the end of Asuran Fists.

ranger isn't cool beans to people anymore. well it is, but most people are too ignorant to believe that

same thing for warrior except they're about as effective as a paper bag in end game.

Quoted for truth taru flip is awsome.

and ya MNK owns for DD in partys and can Chi-Blast for endgame making it a very usefull DD job.

I'm not bragging or anything.. but this whole ToD thing is a bit...overanalyzed. I can keep up with a heavy DD..but then their super duper Job Abilities kick in -.- Meat Chiefkabobs ftw.
Example: 2 fists = One two-handed heavy weapon.
..don't wanna start no flame.

Actually DoT is a significant factor for damage. None of monk's weaponskills do huge damage unless you're fighting something weak to blunt; and the fact that monk has no single-hit weapon skills means that subbing thief is completely worthless unless you're farming. Monk excells in damage over time, and with that DoT plus their "weaker" weaponskill damage they still parse higher than other jobs, so the non-ws damage is significant. The concept of DoT isn't important is exactly why monk was ignored for so long as a capable damage dealer. People would only see their lower damage per fist and their lower weaponskill damage, but ignore their faster attack speed and the number of attacks per round that account for less damage per hit.

As for the 2 fists = 1 2-handed weapon, I never really found that to be true after 40-ish. After that, my fists would do a larger percentage of a 2-handed weapon's damage, and that percentage grew as I leveled. At later levels, 2 fists was well over the damage of a single hit from a 2h weapon. That, coupled with the fact that monk can get 5 attacks in a single round, and that we attack significantly faster than 2h weapons(348 delay vs 450-530 without +haste gear or spell), means that monks have more opportunity to do damage; which is where DoT comes into play.

Bandwagon Jobs: MNK, WAR, NIN.
RNG was too, but that changed; there's also BLM and SMN. BLM will probably change as well when BLM zerging isn't good anymore.

Ive always loved mnk but I cant lvl it because I cant afford the gear. Dot is a huge factor period having that spiked high dmg ws is all good but when a mnk still out DoTs you what does it matter. As for rngs im a rng is just takes more work to maintain that same damage like b4 the nerf.

add in brd and your right

Once SE made people think ranger wasn't a good DD anymore (David Blaine would have trouble conjuring an illusion of such magnitude), Monk, Warrior, Ninja and Black Mage took in all the Ranger refugees. Only the Rangers that enjoyed Ranger as a job stuck around. Those who only played to be "the best DD" and get community worship quickly gambled on the "next best thing". I think Blm was affected the most, but even still, the need for a Whm sub was a modest noobguard against even more excessive bandwagonning. Blm's one saving grace was that you can't sub ninja (halelulia). After all, no e-peen flaunting number hunter would be caught dead levelling a support job. Warrior, Ninja and Monk don't produce the spike damage big number bragging rights, but still match Ranger DoT, and as lfp Drks will tell you, everyone's all about DoT now. I think with ToAU, Monks, Warriors, Ninjas and Blms will get a temporary reprieve. Blu is the next best thing. Hopefully SE doesn't adjust it and leaves it as the best job out there, to focus all the bandwagon hoppers in one convenient location.

I really appreciate these opinions guys, thanks :) but let's not just make DoT a reason to level monk...I support the people who love the job because of every attribute and ability it has, not just because end game links like them.

It's great for dunes/qufim/yuhtunga.... and it's great when they get Ranging Fists.. between there.. their damage is horrid.. but I still invite them cause I <3 Mnks ^.^/

what do you mean I can't sub nin! there's lots of fights /nin is great for if you can do enough damage. Also pre lvl 51 dual wield wands 4tw, too bad the average whm sucks and needs a ton of help ; ;

I've been a big fan of MNK since my first few weeks in the game, but I held off leveling it until I could afford the "Level 40 Ouch." I tend to view taru melee as "advanced job +1" in terms of needing to go the extra mile to keep up. Hell, one of the reason I want to get WHM to 75 is so I can pour a few merits into MNK-centric categories.

MNK is awesome, one of the three jobs I want to take to 75.

Taru backflip? Yes, please!

hey, read my sig.... i got on this topic way before you...

Blu is the bandwagon job of the year. :|

I always thought monk was kinda cool in its one dimensional pure melee quality. However, I don't level melee jobs in general because the gear standard simply to perform acceptably is outrageous. I equip my mage jobs well, but my budget isn't a fraction the cost of a good melee. /kneel <melee>.
