Monk Help

Garrison Hose STR: 1 DEX: 1
That's what I used for the loooongest time(till like, 70? 73? something like that) I'd take that over 5 att any day.
Honestly, I was expecting you to say something truly iditioc like jujitsu sitabaki or akido koshita; so I'm surprised that you actually wore something beneficial. That being said, you're an idiot for thinking that 1 STR, 1 DEX is going to do anything over 5 attack, especially at low levels; not even for your weapon skills.

Monk benefits less from stacking STR than almost every other melee class, and as trippy already pointed out, attack is far more useful for meleeing than STR is. Hell, even for every other melee DD out there, 5 attack is far more valuable for meleeing. The only time increasing your STR would be truely better than increasing your attack is if you're at the attack ceiling, which you don't often hit at 75 without help, it's impossible to do so at low levels.

The only advantage that Garrison hose has over Republican Subligar is that it's not a subligar; and you're a moron for chosing aesthetics over stats.

The way I remember it, att adds to the max dmg you can possibly do, while str adds to the dmg that you do every hit. So hypothetically lets say you do 5-10 dmg normally. Adding att will let you do 5-12 dmg, while adding str will let you do 7-10 dmg. Isn't this correct?

No, you have it backwards. STR is the maximum amount of damage that you can do, while attack is increasing your average damage in that range. Best analogy I heard was on these boards from someone I don't remember: "STR sets the height of the roof, attack is how high you can jump."

weapons ... boreas cesti from 30-50 .. 50 tactician hooks +2 or cross counters if you can afford them. Now im going to make a different suggestion than most here because both the legs and head slot kinda suck when leveling mnk and theres some rather large -enmity gains to be made. Now til 50ish go republican all the way but once 50 i was having alot of trouble with hate management for tanks so i put on raven beret and raven hose for the -14 enmity which i think made a large difference while i was tping. Then i would weaponskill in my sub and hairpin.

Well in that case, yes the subligar is much better. My bad, guess I fucked up.
...actually, I was taught by someone that it was the other way around, so they fucked up. I guess so did I for not confirming it, but owell...I'm still blaming the other person.

Eh, I didn't notice much improvement when I wore -enmity gear on my monk; the tank would usually get an extra 1-2 attack rounds before I'd end up pulling hate anyways. I just threw up counter stance and tanked until they got hate back; which most PLD's never seem to figure out they could get hate by curing me while I was getting beat on. I didn't wear -14 enmity though(only -7); but I didn't like lowering my damage output more than I had to.

I was a galka wearing republican sub far into the 70s. I got made fun of a lot for looking like a goofball but hey... I wasn't going to spend the money on the striek subligar and once I got pants from dynamis I was good to go. Eventually I got Haidates but like I said... From 25-70+ I was sporting the subligar. /em shudders at memories. Walking around town I wore some white pants so I would look cool. In a party who cares what you look like. Only thing people remember is your ability to perform.

Side note: Please don't take informative posts like this and start flame wars. There is another area to post stuff like that.

Once again that is a giant ass YES on the Boreas. It's about a 2 hour pop time and they are fucking awesome. You do your regular damage + another 0-7 damage from the 100% added wind damage. Great for the 2 levels in the jungle fighting mandies, if I remember right are weak to wind.

Baj and Rap only reason you guys are sticking up for republican sub because you actually looked good in it. ;) (joke <,<)

I had been using Martials from 24-32(It's current level) mainly because I was to poor to afford Rep and I used Martials on a lot of the jobs I had at that level. If I start leveling MNK again I'm going to stick it out for the sub though, and throw that on in parties.

All great advice so far though.

Very few PLDs during exp grind (not endgame/established PLD usually) seem to grasp this concept....

*Republic Subligar

Carry on...

I'd say republic subligar > strike subligar/melee hose > byakko's haidate. You're also going to want to keep in mind that stat mods are small on most of MNK's ws, so attack/acc is usually going to be your best friend. Of course, use common sense to best judge what gear to use. An example would be headpiece for WS @75:

Shura Head: STR+5 Acc+5
Genbu's Kabuto: VIT+15

Genbu's Kabuto will override shura, since it has such a huge amount of VIT on it, even if STR is a primary mod. Of course, accuracy is still awesome, so it's situational. Keep stuff like that in mind, and don't care about looks, and you should do just fine as a MNK.

Edit: Also, don't use Brown Belt for WS. You're better off with Warwolf Belt or Potent Belt.

Warwolf is for chakra only, use potent belt for weapon skills. Those are also only after level 60, before then a life belt is a good option.

One thing to notice is you probably should not turn on counterstance right after you get hate since it generate noticeable amount of hate. It will negate some damage you take but it will also take tank longer to get hate back. It depends on what mob you fight, but turning it on between battle or when your tank have solid hate will help. If i remember correctly, only activation generate hate, not the actual hits you counter.

I think the counters do generate some hate, since the mob still gains TP just like it was a normal attack; or at the very least you don't lose any hate since you're not taking any damage.

I know a guy that used to have all his cure macros set as /ma "Cure" <me> on Pld

I do that too, but I also have this amazing ability to switch to my magic menu and cast teh cures on ppl who need them. (not trying to sound like an ass if it looks that way)

so brown belt for the Haste +8% for getting tp then use Potent for the acc+ for Multi-Hit WS

Yeah, haste is useless for a weapon skill, so it's better to change it out for something else.

no one has mentioned spartans. or are they not socially acceptable. lol
