NIN & Merits

while i understand you are putting 8/8/4 into weapons, alot of people dont have the that many weapons for melee that they will be using..... you are a WAR, so WAR is a little different.. but where i disagree with what you say is "least useful across all your jobs".. evasion is actually the only merit that you listed, out of those, that is USEFUL across all jobs ;) just technical wording i guess though.
Granted - I did word that somewhat oddly. I meant that I wouldn't notice a difference, hence find a real use for evasion merits, on any job but NIN - and even then I'd benefit more from the katana merits since I'll likely be using it mostly for merit parties or tanking the little things where holding hate will be a bigger issue than staying alive.

WAR evades like a barn and WHM is just a little worse so an extra 8 skill on either of those wouldn't make or break them. I don't do HNMs regularly either which is where I suspect the veteran NINs pile on all the eva stuff they can. But again I know very little of that scene.

This is about the time I slowly back out of the discussion since my knowledge is easily trounced by that of others.

Evasion isn't consistent on any job except for Ninja and Thief. Putting merits in it is fruitless unless all you want to do is fight coffer key mobs.

Evasion isn't a huge boost, but it's still a boost like most merits, nothing ground breaking. If you have a job that will make use of it (most jobs can to some extent) and don't have another job that will benefit from any other combat skill, then it's a worthwhile investment in my opinion. However, since most melee just end up cannoning or switching off hate when casting shadows, it's a better investment to get a weapon skill rather than evasion just to improve melee.

Ok so i've started to merit my NIN, now so far i'm going for:

Katana
Crit Rate
Evasion
Ninja Tool Expertise (cheap skate ftw)
STR

Now i'm going to leave HP/MP alone incase I decide to do a mage job/another DD. They aren't that important and can wait till I decide what else i'm going to do in game.

Now for my questions. Sange, is it worth skilling up my throwing for? I'm guessing a resounding no. However i'd like some input from other NIN's. Also Group 1 merits, Subtle Blow & San spells. Are these worth spending merit points in or not? I wouldn't get all the San spells, probably just fully merit one of them (most likely Hyoton as Tsurara is uber cheap). Part of me wants to at least spend my allotted merits in each category, but there's also the part of me that really can't be bothered if it's not necessary/useful.

Please no replies that are just "No" or "Yes" i'd like reasons why. I'm trying to pimp out myself with merits as best as I can, whilst working on getting sea/sky.

I just upgraded tool expertise and subtle blow to full. I've been saving room in group 1 and 2 in case they add something for nin. But basically I don't fine the san spells or Sange worth the merits. Same reason I didn't merit the increase in effect of the elemental spells, I don't want to waste the merits on it.

I think Eulore put one upgrade in Sange to see how it is, and he didn't fine the dmg from it impressive or helpful. Maybe if I have an extra 3 merits I'll try it out myself, but until then I'll use the merits on something else.

Before you worry about the groups....

8/8 in katana first 4/4 crits next. Get these out of the way.

I disagree with anyone who is against putting 4/4 in evasion. Especially for ninja this is useful. If your thinking about lvling thf which you said you were....def. put into evasion. You don't have to merit this right away but do it eventually.

For the groups...

Group 1 put 5/5 in subtle blow and choose a spell to upgrade which will lower the resistance to a enfeebling ninjutsu to follow it.

Group 2 I would put into expertise as this will also stack nicely with your AF2 Hands.

After that the choices are up to you.

I did Katana 8/8, Crit 4/4. Then I went to Str 5/5 before I even thought about touching Group 1 or Group 2 Merits. I actually did 2/4 Eva then thought about it and switched to Str 5/5 Str and finished off 4/4 Eva. Did tool expertise next.
