I just wanted to know everyones opinion on which job you'd rather get exp with.
I'm sure this has probably been discussed before but I haven't seen it and I was just wondering on which I should level...I know that Ninjas don't keep hate as well as Paladins, but with trick attack.......

As long as the person does his job right, either one is fine with me. As a BLM of course, I like PLD since they keep hate easier than NIN, but a WHM on the other hand would probably like NIN better since they require less healing when it's done well.

I think both are great when they're played well.

depends on the set up. As a black mage: Paladin. As a Thief: Ninja. It relaly depends what situation you're in but both are really good tanks if the player knows what he/she is doing.

yes and it's best with shrimp fried rice

What they said

I like NIN, because with a NIN I get to recap my evasion after each level on monk. I like PLD's when I'm on whm, since with a NIN it can be boring if they are competant; plus I get to use regen often.

Lol okay, so NIN's can't keep hate off of Monks.....nice Avatar by the way :3

Personaly I feel that Paladins are the best tanks.. and i dont perticularty like ninjas.... i mean would you like it if someone was taking your job away from you i think not

But to reiterate PLDs own all but then agian i may be a little biased

Generally speaking, it doesn't matter. Tanks don't really have a shortage of party invites, especially after war/nin fall out of the mix (around 40). Alot of it depends on the party set up, and alittle on the mob. Pld works best with rdm, Nin makes brd's job alittle easier by not needing ballad. mobs that AOE alot are hard on nin, as are mobs that attack fast. Mobs that hit hard are more annoying for plds. Mobs that paralyze, silence, petrify, are equally difficult for both tanks.

But generally, you'll take the tank that is available, regardless of what job he is.

Fastest pickup parties I've ever been in have all been with ninjas. I've had some decent 6k/h pickups with paladins, and it's fun and stuff...impressive to find paladins that know how to work with thieves...but nin parties are even more beautiful than paladins who know their game.

With a nin you don't automatically have to build the party around MP, although it's still certainly an option. Whether you're building the party around the skillchain (eg: nin thf rng blm whm brd) or around melee damage (eg: nin drk rng sam war rdm) doesn't matter much. The nin can not only tank, but they can deal damage. So mobs tend to go down faster than with a paladin.

But paladin's safer. Arguably more useful in a cluster **** party where there are no tactics and only skull-busting, so I guess you can build a pld party around meleeing or the skillchain too. Or in a mp-heavy party using magic to kill things they tend to to better.

I'd still say nin though. You take a big risk in inviting a bad one who doesn't know how to survive the hate that gets planted on them, but when it pays off it pays off big. They don't have to be rich and spam stuff to keep hate. I'll do that for them gladly. They just have to know how to not die.

well first of all.. its not the tanks job to know how to play with you.. its YOUR job (as a thf) to know how to play with the tank.. some tanks like it differently.. rough.. soft.. this way.. that way........... but on a serious note.. on my pld i have eliminated the need for 1st voke.. why 1st voke when i hold hate just fine? i hardly ever lose hate.. ever.. ever ever.. unless i truely wish to lose it.. PLDs that know how to keep hate will keep you from taking it no matter what you do~

when im on my THF ive also eliminated the need for 1st voke (1st vokes are sloppy and shouldnt be used past lv60 IMO, UNLESS the tank is having incredibly tough time keeping hate).. this is what i do on thf.. i pull.. tank vokes (nin or pld it doesnt matter).. the other DD uses WS and rips hate (ive had it not rip hate only verry rarely past lv60).. so after the other DD rips hate.. i SATA dancing edge or sharkbite onto the tank.. the BLM bursts.. the enemy is left wondering "where the fook is my HP?" because they are already over 50% dead..

[a little side note: thfs arent dmg dealers first, they are hate control, if you SATA w/o 100% tp.. your screwing your party out of hate control and not, in my opinion, playing thief correctly.. also.. if you split SA and TA up.. i kill you!!!!111 dont do it.. HATE CONTROL FIRST NOT DAMAGE!! SA+TA = greater hate control than SA alone and TA alone]

lets examine this shall we? so your saying.. babysit y our ninja so that they get used to not using ninja tools & elemental wheel? stupid.. flat out.. stupid.. ninjas who dont spam ninja tools wont keep hate.. flat out.. spam spam spam.. also.. they deal pretty good dmg!!! oh now i agree.. you need melee dmg & ninja tools to keep hate really well.. i used to think i didnt need melee.. and i really didnt.. before lv48.. now.. life belt.. and acc gear.. i still dodge really well.. but i also deal more melee dmg and keep hate easier.. before nerf.. i kept hate from SATA VB on a ranger (for a distortion skillchain) by spamming ninja tools.. PLDS keep hate via self cures.. ninjas keep hate via ninja tools.. a PLD who doesnt cure him/herself wont keep hate.. a ninja who doesnt use tools doesnt keep hate..

~nib

p.s. i know i wrote a book (and im not done) but tanking is something ive grown to be very passionant about.. i enjoy it when BLM's tell me 'wow im free to nuke now without dieing' on NIN & PLD.. it makes me feel good.. why feel scared to play your job the best you can become y ou have a shitty tank? i also want to say.. TALK TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE LV75 OF THAT JOB!!! i do this with all my jobs!! they know what works.. and you can put your own spin on it.. Hillie told me to use more +str than i already had on my WAR.. i pwn'd before! now i REALLY pwn.. [thx hillie].. learn from ppl who have played the jobs and figured out what works..

It depends on the setup and the player skills.

For Thief, a ninja is good. For Blm, a paladin is better, he can keep hate with cure spells. Yesterday I was in a JP pt with 2 blms and one of them always got hit lol the ninja tried to keep hate but even if he was good at his job, there were several times that he couldnt keep the hate when the blm casted something... and the blm wasn't spamming the spells btw lol (well not that much) but I've seen blms spamming spells and pld controling hate :O so.. yeah it depends on setup and player skills. I've played as thf with pld and nin tanks and I've noticed that when I play with nins, they can control hate very well and I don't get hit so often. I've played as blm also with nin and pld tanks and I noticed that plds get the mob off of me with cure spells easily, while nins have some hard time trying to protect me o.o.

Btw, you said before that you suck at tanking. I don't know if you suck but if you know how to play them, there shouldn't be any problem.

Edit: I guess you were right.

Sad thing is..... Our tank is WORSE than the freakin gil sellers...

Guess what? Because our tank (Lucifel) is so bad... our summoner (main healer) just died... so I have so much time to type this since we have down time...

Then we continue on... and finally reach the Valley of Sorrows...and we meet the said party above...

Lucifel says.. "Oh, Redmonkey wants me to join their party. They have 2 PL-ers..."

I make a remark about idiots who have to be PL at level 59-60 are freakin noobs.. response "Well, it's good exp" Umm...that's how you DON'T learn how to play your class.... Especially at such high levels.. and ESPECIALLY SINCE THE TWO PL-ERS are the two in the topic line!

Meh. That's what he says though. w/e. Who cares anyway.

Before I start...

Wow, why are people with the "PLD for BLMs because they can keep hate better"? Gimme a break, if that's the case, learn to play BLM please if you NEED a PLD to actually nuke; you should quit BLM.... ok no, but :P, I'm a BLM myself, I adapt to the type of PT; it is true, PLDs keep hate better, NINs take less damage or not at all you could say, it all depends on the PT setup, the mob's you're fighting and all.

NIN is more expensive, for PLD you worry about gear, as NIN you worry about gear and Ninja tools, at the end tho, it's the player's skills that say it all.

I don't prefer a specific type of tank, sometimes you need a PLD sometimes a NIN, there's a lot of mobs that can't be tanked by NINs, like HNMs and stuff, there's other mobs that can't be tanked by PLD like those manticores with the Max MP down AoE, NINs don't tank MNK mobs as well as PLDs, but in the end, the player's skill can overcome it, I've seen great PLDs and NINs who can tank anything...

Someone mentioned that war/nin falls out of the tanking role at around 40, and I would disagree. A brd and elegy can make war/nin an extremely powerful tank in almost any situation, better than both nin and pld. A war/nin can deal top tier damage while being able to blink off most hits, making it extremely exp efficient.

also:
ninjas who dont spam ninja tools wont keep hate

This is not entirely true. For a good part of your levels, ninja tool spam is a strong hate-keeping utility. However, with appropriate gear and abilities, a nin focused on damage dealing gear can keep hate better than a pld. Tool spam isn't the only way to do things.

I've been spamming these since I could use them. After intro ichi debuffs, spam away.

Fuma Shuriken....... wow.

Whats great about this game is how we can argue this and there is no definate answer. Same goes with DD. I love that about this game.

The only people are the ones who say "no you cant do that"

Oh yea NIN=PAL in my book. :)

Kisada wasn't that you who tanked for my WHM's party for a while as WAR after our NIN DCed in Boyahda Tree? I remember after that whole thing I'd been saying that WARs can make a very decent tank if they know what they're doing.
