Official Blu-ray Thread

Nope hdmi doesn't work either. When I do a custom selection with HDMI it forces 480p and then I select 1080p, and when I load up blu-rays it puts em at the 480p. With component I can make it so only 1080p is selected but then it plays in 480i.

Sounds like something's broken in your PS3; I set mine to 1080p and didn't have any problems.

Unless I am mistaken, while some component cables have enough bandwidth to handle 1080p the DRM on Bluray requires a digital connection to display 1080p. All I can recommend is check for a firmware update to your television and read the update notes to see what the firmware is supposed to fix. If that doesn't work try to borrow a friends HDMI cable to just try eliminating the possibility of a cable problem.

Oh, are you going directly from the PS3 to the television or are you going into a receiver and then from the receiver into the television? If you are going through a receiver try a direct connection to see if there is some kind of hardware issue with the receiver.

Yeah I am going through a receiver and I'm guessing its more than likely the issue, just wanted to see if there was any other known problems so that I didn't have to mess around with all my cords.

I only thought of that because I've had some problems with receivers in the past with video over HDMI. I own a Onkyo. I run my sat. box, PS3, everything with a HDMI connection directly into the television and then run optical to the receiver because in my case it will output 1080p but it constantly looses the picture and has to go through the handshake process again and again and again. On my Onkyo they say they have a fix but I am out of the service period, so I would have to pay to ship it to them, pay them to perform the fix, and then pay for them to ship it back to me.

When you go straight from the PS3 to the tv does 1080p work?

Yeah that was it, runs fine now. And yeah I did the same as you, Optical to the Receiver and HDMI to the TV. I just wasn't sure about that because other stuff ran at 1080p but w/e its all good now.

What Receiver do you have? Even the cheap TX-SR50X series has a 1080p pass through; so unless it's an older model it should work.

The receiver I have is the Onkyo tx-sr674. It displays a 1080p signal, the picture just drops out a lot when using HDMI.

Ah, that was one of their first models with HDMI, which explains why they had problems like that. If you want to upgrade your receiver in the future, you shouldn't have that issue at all.

I'm sure that is the case. They have a hardware fix for my receiver but I think the final cost for me to ship it to them, have them fix it, and send it back to me was around $200. I'll just use it how it is and buy a new receiver sometime down the road.

I just have some cheap Yamaha one: Here. And like I said it through put other stuff in 1080p but just blu-rays would always drop down a res.

Does anyone know where I can pre-order FFVII Advent Children Complete from? I need that FFXIII demo! O_O

I've tried playasia but they don't seem to have the pre-orders up, and even if they did, they'd never post to the UK.

Picked up Groundhogs day and Indy 4. I hear 1-3 in 2009.

FYI - Akira THIS month. I like it, but I don't really understand it. Hoping for Ninja Scroll, the original Ghost in the Shell and Cowboy Bebop. I'd open the wallet for Outlaw Star, Evangelion or Yuyu Hakusho too. Very picky about Anime. The Kenshin- Samurai X OVAs and the series X I'd like too. That's about it.

Got the two Underworld in the mail and picked up Serenity at BB yesterday, which I'm gonna go watch right now actually.

Picked acouple more up, heres my complete list now:

Boondock Saints
Bourne Trilogy
Underworld
Underworld Evolution
Serenity
Kill Bill vol. 1
Band of Brothers
Casino Royale
Last Samurai
Black Hawk Down
Tears of the Sun
300
Swordfish
The Prestige
Ultraviolet
Chain Reaction
American Psycho

Your list needs some Scorcese and Coppola!

Raging Bull, History of Violence and Amadeus came out, btw, and I believe Ama will be $15 sunday at BB. First Reviews of Akira in too, gonna be a keeper.

I picked up Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead last week. I'll buy the other Romero flicks eventually, and keep my fingers crossed for a Night of the Living Dead Blu-Ray.

I don't have many:

Troy - Director's Cut
300
Kung Fu Hustle
House of Flying Daggers
Kill Bill 1 & 2
Godfather collection
Fifth Element
No Country For Old Men
There Will Be Blood

I think that's it. Most of them were bought during some kind of Amazon Buy 2 get 1 Free sale.

I want to pick up Mad Men seasons 1 and 2 on blu-ray, though. Maybe when my tax refund comes in.

Also, I read that Sony was going to start selling movie blu-rays with their ps3 games on the same disc. So like Transformers and the Transformer movie game would be sold as a single blu-ray disc. (Hardly ideal in this case, as both the movie and the game sucked, but it could be cool if they stop making shitty movie games.)
