One reported dead, several injured in Virginia Tech shootings

That's also only 8. And they were tiny kids. So it's kind of an exception.

I understand what you're saying. I understand that if you broke into a nursery with a butterknife, you could probably kill everyone in the room. When I typed my post, I guess I was thinking more about average sized not-tiny-people. lol.

I'd hafto disagree on it being an exception. It would've been much more if people hadn't tackled the guy. Same thing when it comes to the guy with a gun - no one tried to stop him. On the contrary, people sat around like ducks, so of course there were many more injured/killed. If the kids and teachers sat around and did nothing (during the knife incident) I guaruntee you the deathcount would've been the same, if not more, because you can't run out of ammo with a knife.

Reading this article:

Chris Davids, a Virginia Tech senior who graduated from Westfield High School in Chantilly, Va., with Cho in 2003, recalled that the South Korean immigrant almost never opened his mouth and would ignore attempts to strike up a conversation.

Once, in English class, the teacher had the students read aloud, and when it was Cho's turn, he just looked down in silence, Davids recalled. Finally, after the teacher threatened him with an F for participation, Cho started to read in a strange, deep voice that sounded "like he had something in his mouth," Davids said.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this sounds like either fear of public approval or fear of saying the wrong thing - which can stem from earlier abuse. I would not be surprised to hear he suffered abuse of some sort in the past, either from his parents or previous school mates, to shape him into someone that shy with so much hatred.

F-cking Counterstrike.

What I think would be a better deterent would be a nation wide concealed carry law. Because then, everyone *might* have a gun. Like myself, I usually carry my .22 pistol (got my concealed carry permit via a PI lisence) and it makes me feel a whole shitton safer then campus security. I mean sure, there are panic boxes about every 250 feet, and campus police will respond to those within 4 minutes, but I can draw alot quicker then 4 minutes should the situation require it.

One problem: even with a CCP it is still illegal to carry on a campus.

Holy cow! You're absolutely right! We should just give them away to everyone! Crazy, sane, young, old, who cares!

I thought I mentioned I was disturbed by the fact that someone with obvious mental health problems was able to obtain 2 guns legally. I must be over-sensitive or something.

Your sarcasm skills rival my own! Marry me! <3

It should be noted that the VT Shooter obtained his guns illegally. He lied on his application on a section that would have instantly denied him the ability to purchase a gun. While reforms may need to take place to mitigate this risk, I wonder if the American Taxpayers are willing to pay to have this loophole plugged.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't this kid a resident alien and not a full blown citizen?

This is one area of legal gun sales that would catch my eye...Why sell guns to someone that is not a citizen?

Law-abiding citizens won't mind whatever background checks and benchmarks are required to obtain a gun. They have nothing to hide.

Indeed, I've seen differing reports on this issue, that's why I included a source. I was watching an CNN interview with the gun salesman, and he indicated that the VT Gunman lied on the application, and if he answered the question truthfully, he would have been denied a gun. This is also referenced in the article I quoted.

From the aritcle:
Cho filled out two forms when he bought the Glock at Markell's shop, about 50 kilometres from the university where he would use it five weeks later. One asked if he suffered from mental illness. "He answered, `No,'" Markell said. "Obviously, he was lying."

Markell and others familiar with state and federal gun laws said people committed by the state to a mental health institution are barred from obtaining a gun. But Wendell Flinchum, chief of the Virginia Tech police department, said he "believes" Cho committed himself to the mental facility voluntarily.
(My emphasis added)
The last sentance of above is not believed to be true according to numerous sources. If this is the case, the gun was obtained illegally.

My intention of this point was to illustrate that illegal purchasing of guns isn't a "shady back ally" affair that is out of the realms of the Average Joe.

I am unclear on the laws on this issue. I've searched it, but haven't found the answer yet.

Man... My mom just told me that a child at my sister's middle school got arrested last night for threatening to 'shoot all his enemies Friday.' It's scary to think about, you know? Just with all these events going on, there are probably kids across the country just like this kid... And it really scares me to think about it...

Hey, guess what. I've been diagnosed with depression. I take Wellbutrin. Yet, I have a perfectly clean criminal record and I'm above the age of 18 and am an American citizen. Since I have no history of crime I don't think I should have my second amendment rights taken away from me. If this kid was a citizen and had done nothing in the past then he deserved the same rights. What happened was horrible but prohibition in most any case only creates more problems and doesn't really fix anything. Shit is going to happen. You can't stop it. It doesn't matter how many restrictive laws are in place. People are going to murder other people. You just have to make sure they don't continue to do that after you know they did it.

HUGE difference though between being diagnosed with depression and having a court ordered detention placed on you because it is suspected you are a danger to yourself and others.

One problem: even with a CCP it is still illegal to carry on a campus.

According to the Laws in place in Lawrence, it is only illegal to carry a weapon inside a School building and now on the bus system. On campus proper, no restrictions, barring school policy.

school policy.

Which has no legal merit. So the worst that can happen is they'll have security(or police if you're a dick about it) remove you from the premises. Assuming you're a student anyway, if not they'll get you with trespassing.

Actually it does, as far as CCP goes. At least in ohio, you agree to not carry in school buildings, government facilities, liquor establishments and any campus or business which declares itself a "Gun free zone" (which VT falls under). The last was up for debate in some branch of government and was ironically enough shot down this passed Monday.

The more media coverage they put out there to get their damned ratings, the more some angsty loner kids at home are watching and getting more and more ideas. Now they went and publicized his stupid "manifesto" which furthur inspires these psycho children to go and do it themselves.

Lovely.

Oh. I didn't know about that.

Nevermind >.>

Edit: Fixed. I was previously quoting the wrong person.

I just watched the crazy man's video, and I'm pretty disgusted that he thinks he's doing what Jesus would do, or that Jesus would be proud?? And he's doing this for his family? I'm glad he shot himself, he deserved to die.

Fuck you. You disgust me. No one deserves to die.

Sorry..I guess it kinda just came out. I was kinda mad watching his video. But I really don't think that he should live. He killed a ton of people, for what? He said he was like Jesus, um no. Yes he was depressed, I know depressed people but they do not have thoughts or try to come to my school and kill anyone they meet cause they themselves aren't happy.

I'm sorry, but I think some people deserve to die. I rarely think that.

Edit for no derailment: my point is people do something so evil that putting them in life in prison won't really change anything, would you send a man to jail for life because he killed millions of people? This student at Vtech killed himself. If he lived and was arrested, I would probably change my opinion on him, depending on how he would act for what he did. But seeing the video, I really don't think he showed remorse. Comparing yourself to Jesus for killing 2 people, and going to kill more is totally wrong in my opinion, Jesus isn't someone who blows people away cause he's unhappy.

i respect your opinion, respect mine, thanks.

Yeah, Saddam doesn't really belong in this topic. It'd get quickly derailed. Hell, I was tempted.
