Ok so, skilling up parrying is just one of those things where you set out to do it, and get no results... yet when you're just screwin around soloing you seem to get (albeit rare)

So say I wanted to try... again... to go out specifically to level parrying. Does the weapon you wield affect parrying rate? (think how different shield size blocks different amounts of damage...)

For example, and sake of discussion, I can get dual parrying knives (+20 skill... low dmg) or an Earth Staff (-physical damage...)

But will dual wielding, or wielding a staff, earn more parries, regardless of skill? Does anyone have any information regarding this?

maybe location/mobs suggestions could be included :)

off the top of my head, i hear mnk-type mobs are pretty cake, due to fast and low dmg attacking, or fleas out in caedarva.

Thoughts?

Dual Wielding doesn't net you more parries. You only parry with your main hand.

Two-Handed Weapons are rumoured to have a higher chance to parry, and a lot of people do believe it to be true. Higher skill means less chance of actually skilling up, so just go with Earth Staff. Even if the higher chance is false, it's not going to be worse than parrying with a one handed weapon.

Chigoe are Ok. I'd sub Dragoon, or Dark Knight. Jump and Weapon Bash will be extremely helpful if you need to kill it off. They rack up damage fairly quickly, despite hitting for so little.

I have to disagree with Skaw on this one. Your base parrying skill is what determines skill ups, not your modified one after +'s. So the +20 from the daggers wouldn't make it harder to get skill ups. However, there is that whole rumor about 2 handers parrying more often then 1 handers. But there's also been rumors about rapiers parrying more often then broadswords, GKs having a better rate then other 2 handers, etc etc and any number of other unconfirmable rumors. So I suggest going with the knives as you can physically see they increase yer parry chance.

And as for mob choices, I've seen people have great success with the mandies in Den of Rancor. Low attack power, good attack speed, and nothing too "ohmygodI'mdead" in terms of abilities. Just a thought though. But I would avoid the chigoes. While you can just use a JA to instant kill um, if you get hit with a plague as a non-caster, you're not getting a chance to rest til it wears. Could cost you alot of time.

+Evasion skill makes evasion skill ups go much, much slower. Leveling ninja through the 70's I had to take off boxer's mantle to see any skill ups. This is why it's believed that +Parrying skill lessens your chances of a skill up. I've only seen one good sized test of full parrying build vs full agi build, and agi had much better results overall.

What job are you using to skill up with? If you have advanced movement speed I would suggest skilling up off Yovra in sea. Pick a weapon you have no skill in (don't want to hit and give it TP) and go in with utsu, run when utsu timers are down. NM's give a much higher rate of skill ups on successful parries, yovra check as NM's, and are high enough to cap you at 75.

Looks like you've got some CoP progression to go through, Demon. ;)

The single best way to lvl up parrying is to use a relic weapon (999 delay, 1 damage) against chigoes and subbing RDM. However, once you've capped parrying for Chigoes, you'll need to go after stronger things, so then earth staff would probably be better, with someone backup healing you.

I'd reccomend +agi and -evasion skill, as less evades means there's more chances of parrying kick in. Its checked evasion > parry > shield, so you'll want as much +agi as possible to increase your parry and evasion chances, and -evasion to lower the chance you'll evade attacks. I do not, however, know if +parry will effect it a lot. Personally, I saw more parry skill ups with +parry katanas on my NIN then I did without them, but I won't comment on that as I haven't done any testing, nor seen any tests on it.

chigoes hit fast and weak, which means the the ammount of chances to skill up is greater, while the damage you take is rather small. Especially subbing RDM and throwing up phalanx. Using the relic weapons means you'll attack really slow and do a minimal ammount of damage. So if you're a PLD, I'd reccomend using the Relic Sword as that's a 2-handed weapon.

Edit: but since you're a THF, Relic Dagger I suppose? <.<; although I don't think THF have staff skill, no? So earth staff would be best as you won't hit much with it anyway.

I have been leveling parrying extensively (250+ now) and over the time I've done it have noticed quite a few things.

The place I mainly gain my parrying skills are in merit parties because you spend a lot of time facing a mob with your weapons out (Katanas for me). However, when I go out and skill up for the purpose of skilling up I prefer to use staff over dual weilding weapons.

To skill up I mainly go to sea and find a low tier Yovra and basically tank for however long I want to skill for. When I go solo I use NIN/WHM and one hand weild dagger so I can enegry drain and cure myself when needed (not too often usually). And when I have someone with me (usually dual boxing GF when she's in class and I am not) I go NIN/WAR using a staff.

The parrys and skills come noticablly faster with the staff on. When I solo with dagger I average about .7 skills per hour (on 14 total skills), and when I use the staff it goes at about 1.1 skills an hour (over 22 total). I know that many of you are probably thinking that the soloing and duoing plays a big part in those numbers, and perhaps it does but when I skill up I never leave the mob so I face about the same number of swings twoard me in an hour.

As for using +parrying skills I would not recommend it if you are trying to skill up. When I first started skilling I tried out a lot of things and using + skills didn't seem to help much. Try to use all of the -evasion gear that you can as to parry more times per hour (you can keep it on if you are getting hit because less down time generally equals more skills).

Hmm, that is about it. Good luck with your parrying ~

One more thing, seeing that you are a THF you should think about asking Brianfist for some help, He soloed his way to 269 so he has quite a bit of experience in that area. He quit the game and came back so I'm not sure how much time he spends in the game now, but he used to be on all the time.

Solo Dragoon to 75, you'll get it. lol My friend Hollie has capped Evasion and parrying from doing that. lol Now it's funny as hell to see him tank on a low-level job. When he gets 37 ninja he'll own!

PS: Anyone ever accidently post early because you typed out something (IE: Ninja) and hit tab for the auto-translate, then hit enter. Resulting in a pre-emptive post? -.-;; I'm sooo a dork

Its like premature ejaculation! You hit tab to auto-translate something kinky, and then you press enter =(

k, wont derail <.<;

Dragoon's parrying caps at 225, which is considerably lower than THF's cap, at 269. Earlier levels are the easiest, too...

While leveling evasion on THF, I noticed I recieved more skill ups when I took hits versus evading hits. That's why removing the boxer's mantle improved skill ups and also why you cannot apply the same logic to parry since you actually need a parry to occur in order to skill up. Skill and AGI will both increase the rate at which you actually parry an attack so one would think adding both would increase the rate of skill ups.

Solo DRG took me to 188. Although I fought nothing but EPs past 65 ... pretty natural I guess. I ended up Level 75 beneath Bosteniuex (spelling).

Kind of off topic, but still on. Its about the order in which skill ups are received. I saw it mentioned earlier, but just want to bring some things up.

Ive found it to be kinda weird with the order (even if the order that is mentioned is true.) The main reason I find it weird, is that you can still get evasion skills when being hit by a mob, so logically, wouldnt the order be Parry > Shield > Evasion. (I know thats not how the game is, but just thinking, lol.)

FFXI just seems to have it backwards, because when somethings coming to hit you, the first things its gotta pass is your weapon, then shield, then you.

But likewise, since you cannot get out of the way.. you use your weapon instead. Idk.

Just doing some out-of-the-box thinking.

I always thought you could parry with offhand, since a lot of people say NIN or /NIN get the parry parry skillups...hm.

If the 2-handed weapon giving better skillup rate is true, then Earth Staff is definitely the best choice since it comes along with the -20% physical damage. Parrying Knives might be decent for more procs, but then there's the debate on if +skill items with cause it to skill up slower in the process.

I'm pretty sure you want to wear -eva and +agi gear as well? Unsure if the thing regarding agi was ever proven/disproven though.

stumbling sandals anyone?

I highly doubt that +skill items will lower the rate you get skill ups, because when you skill up, the game still reads your base stat. Like when you get a skill up with +10 parry, and your base parry is 220, you will get a notice in the log saying "Your parrying reaches level 221" even if the skill actually reads as 231 with the +10

Seriously, what the hell is the point of those? Why would anyone want -10 AGI/DEX?

the maat theory.

Also, who would want Spelunkers Hat? lol, the complete opposite of Optical hat...

stumbling sandals is a joke quest item.

The Maat theory is completely and 100% false.
