Parrying Skillups: Weapon to wield?

My NIN is 61 and parry at 192 (not capped)...I'm parrying plenty, even so.
 
try upping your agi pchan...

also, i'm not a big advocate of the maat theory but you speak in definites that i doubt you have enough fact to base it on. another aspect of the maat theory is perceived advantage is at least as important as actual advantage. if you think you have the upper hand you play smoother, and you panic less. this is just as important as maat receiving the detriments themselves.

Lol! The maat theory is not true. He doesn't match your level or stats. I went in level 68 naked the first time and he still casted level 69 Aero III on me. Went on to pummel me all the same. Shouldn't have if it were true. Beat him the second time only because I went in on darksday to make sure my sleeps would stick. (I had a bad run of sleep resists the first time.)

However you make a good point. The psychological aspect can be FAR more powerful then any gear you could bring to the fight with you. If you THINK you have an advantage sometimes that's more then enough to stay cool and kick his butt.
 
Parry Skillups

I have 75thf no tank job with base parry at 236. I've found that most Parry Skillups come for me from NM's at this stage. Allthough I believe that the reason my Parry is higher than most but not quite LEET yet is that I solo'd my thief to 75 and that took forever (almost 10 months fighting dc-evens till I had NI then evens-tough) I dont believe there is any qiuck way to get parry skill ups personally. I do believe that fighting multiple mobs will increase your chances of getting a skill up but as a previous post suggest's they seem to come randomly. For me currently I am doing Raptors in Besieged and the NM Raptors they seem to give me about .5-1.5 per besieged if I am able to get them solo without others destroying them. Some suggest that since I use full Evasion set that I am reducing my chances but i've tried without, as well as adding the parry daggers and did not notice any difference other than I spent more gil on Shihei. I currently am leveling SAM in hopes that the 2-handed strategy is valid but we will see. Good luck on your efforts and don't give up you will get skill ups albeit slowly but eventually.
 
I dont know if people know this or not, but even tho +parry gear initiates more parries, it increases your skill cap which can, at times, put you outside of the skill up range for the specific mob you are fighting. Its just like with PLD, my shield skill ups were coming along just fine, and then I got my AF boots (+10 shield skill wewt!) but after that, my skill ups slowed down quite a bit. Once I removed them and brought my skill down back to its natural level, skill ups came back like I used to get them.

As far as parry is concerned, Id say remove all your eva gear and increase the agi to produce more parries w/o messing with your natural parry skill. Its worked fine for me so far on my NIN

Hmm so it seems I got parry 150->260 in 1 year or so! And yeah, only way to skill up parry is farm farm and farm again. Now I swaped to another farming camp with mobs that are EM-Toughs, cause the previous camp capped at lv 259 parry (mob lv 73), and only high DC or EM+ can skill me up atm.
 
Parry

This is a trick ive done to get many PLD's there Shield and Parry skill ups as well as some guard for mnks.

I have rdm 75 with phalanx II capped and all the enhancing i can get. I take who ever needs the parry skills to the mire. Theres a tunnel with a leech wondering in it, and outside of it is 4 sheep. i have them attack the Sheep, cause everytime the sheep does a WS a Chigoe pops. After 4 Chigoes (Sheep only pop 4) kill the sheep. Have the person position themself to where the Chigoes are facing them, and have the person engauge the leech. They are enguaged but out of range. Make sure they have there Earth Staff equipped, and any + Def gears. I just keep phalanx II and P4 on them and just light cure them. Rdm just got to make sure they dont heal, cause the leeches will be white (Unclaimed) and if u heal close by u will get slapped around. Parry and shield works great this way, but guard is another thing. Once guard hits 200ish or so (Not fully sure since im not mnk myself), i norm go to the tree and have the mnk take on 2-3 of the black mandys. This one is a little tougher, as the mandys slap ya harder and if things go ugly it will take more than a simple Staff AoE WS to kill the madies unlike the chigoes.
 
its easier to go inside ayedewa subs in this room with 10 chigoes in it. got parry 170-235 at a rate of 2 skill/h like that.
 
I haven't really read the whole thread, but what i did to lvl my parry skill back in the day was to go to sea and whack/solo the sharks, for some reason those gave me way more skillups than any other mob in the game.

Just a thought.

Ummm......check the post before mine.......i didnt necro this. I posted about 8 days after the last post. The guy before me posted a year+ after the last post XD
