I have two weapons that I could be using, and I am not sure how to go about doing it.

I have a Gluttony Sword and Save the Queen.

Should I be using Gluttony and macro'ing in STQ for Cover only or should I just stick with STQ?

I have been told that Macro'ing STQ was the better option, but I have also been told it's just a waste of time.

Any suggestions?

If you macro it in, you're going to lose all of your TP. I don't know how important TP is to a paladin, but it could just be a little extra hate on a WS, but that'd be the only downside to macroing in another weapon that I can see.

From what I have experienced so far, the only TP worthy move in an EXP party is Spirit's Within, but only at 200+ TP. Vorpal Blade isn't all that effective on the IT mobs and any WS below that is already too weak.

So I guess if that is the only drawback, it would be more beneficial to macro it in.

Try that.

Neither

Macuahuitl +1 then Espadon +1 at 66. Have a WS macro for Vorpal Blade

I'd stick w/ Mac +1 in xp parties - if you're gonna solo espadon +1 is better, it's just not as efficient when you're trying to keep hate especially at higher levels.

Neither are good options for an XP party. Paladin can be effective DD's with the right gear and support. Better to do something worthwhile for the party than just sit there and take hits. Eat Tav. Taco's and wear DD gear. I used Bastard Sword +1, then moved into Espadon +1. Just a few nights ago at Mt. Zhalyom crawlers, I layed down a 640 dmg Vorpal Blade w/ a brd. Voke, Sentinel, Vorpal Blade, flash and your set for hate. I recommend selling the Gluttony and Save the Queen and getting a good DD set.

The chances that you'll be invited to a party as a DD on PLD are very slim. Most people don't invite PLDs to the party because they need another DD (I'm sure even a PUP might get an invite as a DD before a PLD) they invite them to tank the mobs and in which case, the Macuahuitl +1 will probably give you better results.

you can still tank and DD, the difference between Full AF and my DD gear on Dmg taken is about 10 dmg a hit. And instead of being a useless MP sponge, you can tank and kill things quicker

I used... Espadon +1

Make up your mind man.

My opinion is if you're using a DD set in an xp party you're gonna be taking more damage when your job is to take hits, which is counterproductive. Yes, keeping a DD set is useful for weapon skills, but that's the only time you should be using it, as a macro for some an extra bump to your spike damage. Now some of you are gonna argue that def + vit on armor isn't that* important to a paladin b/c of naturally high stats but my reply to that is not only do you get more VIT/defense out of tanking gear, you also get more mp.

My other opinion is paladin's should only bust out weapon skills (if they're not fighting colibri) with 300 tp Spirits Within. Yes, it's possible to do some damage w/ vorpal blade but honestly how often do you break 200 dmg with that WS on IT+ mobs with 100 or 200 tp. If you're fighting colibri that does make a difference and you'll wanna bust out WS's as soon as you hit 100tp obviously (or chivalry if needed)

Taking less dmg per hit is better than doing more damage, end of discussion. Yeah, swap stuff in if you REALLY want to use vorpal, but other than that, if I see one of my PLDs full-timing DD gear, then he's a moron. (Pre-meriting anyway.)

the options were gluttony sword and save the queen, neither are good choices for an XP party.

Think about this, If I can contribute to dmg to kill a mob 10 seconds faster, I automatically take less damage because we aren't struggling with dmg. Therefore a DD pld might actually take less dmg than a brick wall.

If you read my post, I said I take about 10 more dmg per hit in DD gear than tank gear.

It's quite well known that Vit+ has a very small effect on shifting the dmg curve

I have 370 MP with no MP+ (+40 MP merits +40 HP merits), MP is not an issue

Vorpal Blade > Spirits Within lol

as I said earlier, I did a 640 vorpal blade @ 100 TP, thats more than a 300% spirits
and I can do it more frequently. On crawlers, Vorpals avg'd about 375.

Tav. Taco's also add enough Def & Vit to make up for the tank gear, I found its better than eating sushi and using lol AF.

And it's that mentality that keeps PLD from actually making it to merit lvls. Even starting as low as 50ish when getting into ToAU camps, PLDs should be starting to move into a more hybrid tanking/DDing gear to be effective in parties in later levels.
As Sae-chan said in the post above me, you'd automatically take less damage overall if you are able to help a mob die a little bit faster in a hybrid gear set than if you were just doing the turtle PLD gear set.

the options were gluttony sword and save the queen, neither are good choices for an XP party.

And the 3rd option is Macahuitl +1 which is also lvl 65 and is very good for an xp party.

Think about this, If I can contribute to dmg to kill a mob 10 seconds faster, I automatically take less damage because we aren't struggling with dmg. Therefore a DD pld might actually take less dmg than a brick wall.

Maybe that's only per hit but you don't mention the difference in how much more tp moves hit you for. Vit+ doesnt have a big shift in the dmg curve per hit but it does make a world of difference vs. enemies tp moves. So you're "automatically take less damage because you arent struggling with dmg" doesn't exactly fit when you DO take more damage so you spend MORE mp -- counterproductive.

Now this scenario is good for merit camps I wont argue that - hybrid gear set for meriting is a different story, but pre-merit camp, fighting regular mobs like crawlers (which use incenerate and the dmg will be much more reduced w/ vit/def setup) or trolls - full turtle gear is the way to go.

Vorpal Blade > Spirits Within lol
Situational.

While Mac +1 has Emnity on it, Holding hate isn't an issue when your doing decent dmg. It also has low base dmg (35)

I notice no increase in Incinerate Dmg, can you provide evidence that a VIT build DRASTICALLY cuts down on TP dmg? Also, barfira resists help much more than anything as it is an Elemental attack.

If you don't want to contribute to dmg, I guess you can settle for some slow XP then. Turtling is dead in XP.

As I said earlier, MP isnt an issue for pld's anymore, auto-refresh, refresh and parade gorget while idle takes care of that.

Spirits Within has 1 use, and its not even really useful, who builds 300% TP anymore before starting Genbu lol? 3 vorpal blades always > 1 spirits within

DD/Shield skill owns you all, don't question it. Always think about situationals and bring a tank set with you as well.

Mac +1, keep it but switch to company sword at 70. Good luck on your leveling :)

3 vorpal blades always > 1 spirits within

Shadow Voids, campaign. I win.

If you want to tank and deal damage, then be a WAR.

lol 72+ i would /anon then make a meripo as PLD/NIN with company sword/joyeuse...
it helped me fly to 75 and no one ever ditched once they found out my job luckily, since I would say "thanks for letting a 72 pld/nin leech this meripo" lol.

Try that.
at 65 i was a ranger that was enjoying the benefits of full archery merits. my PLD having this sword is one of the reasons i didn't die every time i used SW. Also our mages didn't have to cure bomb me cause our PLD had an easier time getting hate back off me. get it, use it, an your DD's will love you for it.
