PLD weapon choice at 65

Try that.

It looks like a Sawfish.

Neither are good options for an XP party. Paladin can be effective DD's with the right gear and support. Better to do something worthwhile for the party than just sit there and take hits. Eat Tav. Taco's and wear DD gear. I used Bastard Sword +1, then moved into Espadon +1. Just a few nights ago at Mt. Zhalyom crawlers, I layed down a 640 dmg Vorpal Blade w/ a brd. Voke, Sentinel, Vorpal Blade, flash and your set for hate. I recommend selling the Gluttony and Save the Queen and getting a good DD set.

If im looking for a DD i can pick one of the plethora of DD's this game has to offer. when i look for a PLD i'm not looking for another DD, i'm looking for a tank. and i can count on 1 hand the number of times that the bolded text occurs at 65. unless specifically told otherwise you will be invited to tank the mob while the death professionals kill it.

who builds 300% TP anymore

Mebbe not before Genbu, but before alot of big endgame fights. Omega/Ultima pop into mind immediately, as well as any other fight PLDs (especially PLD/NINs) would benefit from a large hate move from the beginning of a fight.

wouldn't you rather have a tank that can keep hate, minimize dmg to an acceptable lvl and Kill the mob quicker? Its very possible with just a bard to be an effective DD.

I'm quite aware of endgame uses for Spirits within, ive been doing endgame since NA first killed a HNM

remember that we are talking about a lvl 65 pld here, not a endgame pld. :rtfm:

If the brd is the deal breaker, than you may as well not even get a paladin. I ichi tanked on Warrior vs. ToAU crawlers with a brd and never got hit outside of firespit.

Wouldn't you rather have a tank that can keep hate, take a very low amount of damage and only when certain moves are used, and kill a mob even faster than before?

You're assuming everyone is that skilled/well geared, Makelith. They aren't.

so....
after all this "discussion"

what is a good set to use at someone like me who is 59 and MIGHT be considering leveling paladin before. Because back when i still played my Paladin (2.5 yrs) ago, the whole rave was about stacking as much vit and def as possible, and not relaly looking at the DPS aspect of Paladin for tanking but more at dominating hate and minimizing damage.

when i was playing paladin, i tried to balance enmity gear with dmg minimizing gear, such that I had full hate from the mob which essentially made the PT faster by allowing my party to go all out without having to hold back (something i find people having to do a lot more these days with). Not sure if its because :
1) many of the Paladins ive partied with arent as good at the job or
2) the updates and what not have made pulling hate easier?

thx

Basically, sentinel is a 5-min cooldown gimp invincible now (Idr exactly when it happened), that's really the only thing that's changed about the job, sans Rampart having magic shield now.
I'm a firm believer in PLD just tanking the shit out of everything without focusing on THEIR damage, instead letting everyone else do more of what they can, while minimizing any downtime you might have, refresh or not.

Most prominently 60+; monsters pre-toau were stronger compared to the fairly weak monsters in toau, thus allowing DDs deal more damage and rip hate more easily. It's not uncommon to have exceptional DDs pull hate by just auto attacking. To tank better, you must actually deal respectable damage. Turtle PLDs and lolEVA NINs are a thing of the past.

The monsters also hit pathetically weak meaning that in some cases(lolcolibri) a pld can take almost the same damage in DD gear as they did with turtle gear( this is merely what i was told by a pld. don't hate me if it's wrong). Because of this they can get more hate by actually attempting to deal some damage with thier A+ skill vs stacking vit to get hit for 5 less damage when they could be hitting 5% faster ect.

Besides it being a walk in the park to tank anything that has slow and elegy on it ichi tanking is very viable at that level with double haste song + spell.

That said, that wasn't my point. I was making a different point to Sae-chan.

At low Sixties i would sugest Mac+1 and mabye even some Fire Resist gear Especialy if youra Taru, Cause that Flame breath those Magma crawlers do in mount Zhao can one shot taru tanks pretty regularly

in Toau area's, VT mobs (TP) I'll use:
food: Tav Taco
Weapon: Espadon +1
Shield: I.R. Shield
Ranged: Bikibi
Head: Walkure Mask
Neck: Royal Guard's Collar
Earrings: Drone & Buckler
Body: Hauby
Hands: Fourth Division
Rings: Woodsman & Unyeilding
Back: Amemet +1
Waist: Potent Belt
Legs: Royal Knights
Feet: AF

In defense of Turtling PLD's, I was Lvling in Bikibi Bay on IT+ mobs and found it more useful to Turtle, makes me glad I was always a Mage or DD before Toau

When I was level 65-67 on my PLD, I tanked pretty much full time in my hauby/DD/acc gear. Busted a 898 Vorpal on a crawler in Mt. Z once too (PLD/WAR, pretty sure I maxed out on double attacks and crits. Made my day full of happy though). Of course, I also brought a retarded amount of +self refresh (necklace, sanction bonus, drinks for when I didn't have a RDM, and a refresh musk for those times when you just needed more MP... in 30 seconds) and was not afraid to bust out the Cure IV (I know, MP inefficent, better to use CIII, blah blah blah, didn't care, 360 healing worth o spike hate +I actually had fun with it and managed to not get everyone killed, while maintaining a decent xp chain, so I was content). I forgot what my original point was going to be, but it can be done, and it can be fun.

Oh, remembered my point. I was using the Glut Sword at the time, love the high base damage on it, plus +7 vit is never a bad thing.

...minimize dmg to an acceptable lvl and Kill the mob quicker...

You can't have the best of both worlds in this case. You aren't going to minimize damage if your stacking DD gear. Likewise, you aren't going to kill the mob quicker if your stacking Tank gear.

That being said, a PLD's first priority is tanking the mob. That extra 30 or so damage may be nice at first, but you are ultimately taking more damage than you need to.

And here is what I am using right now. Please suggest replacements if I should be using something else:

Tank Gear
Main: Macuahuitl +1
Sub: Iron Ram's Shield
Ranged/Ammo: Bibiki Seashell
Head: Gallant Cornet
Neck: Parade Gorget
Ear: Antivenom Earring
Ear: Insomnia Earring
Body: Gallant Surcoat
Hands: Gallant Gauntlets
Ring: Chrysoberyl Ring (To be replaced by Hercules Ring in 1 level)
Ring: Jelly Ring
Back: Amemet Mantle +1
Waist: Royal Knight's Belt +1
Legs: Gallant Breeches
Feet: Gallant Leggings

DD Gear (Not completed)
Main: Royal Guards Sword
Sub: Sword Strap
Ranged/Ammo: Bibiki Seashell
Head: Gallant Cornet
Neck: Tiger Sole
Ear: Spike Earring +1
Ear: Spike Earring +1
Body: Haubergeon
Hands:Jaridah Bazubands
Ring: Courage Ring +1 (From WAR days.)
Ring: Courage Ring +1 (From WAR days.)
Back: Amemet Mantle +1
Waist: Royal Knight's Belt +1
Legs: Sipahi Zerehs
Feet: Feral Ledelsens

The lowest possible number for damage isn't always the best. As I said earlier, I take about 10 more dmg per hit in DD gear vs. Tank gear. What's important is being able to find a point where you can handle the incoming dmg with cures and refresh and maximize your outgoing dmg with gear. This gets the mob dead faster = less cures needed. Your logic is flawed and outdated for XP.

50 secs @ 50 dmg taken a hit (1 hit a sec) = 2500 dmg taken
40 secs @ 60 dmg taken a hit (1 hit a sec) = 2400 dmg taken

It's all about the set up you need at a certain camp, at VT, you can obviously put more focus on DD. As I said earlier, I just XP'ed at Bikibi bay, and to keep dmg at sustainable lvls, I had to go full defensive.

Comparing my DD/Sheild skill set up vs. Tank setup

For VT mobs you give up:
7 base Dmg
32 Accuracy
19 attack
2 VIT
10 STR
+3 Shield Skill

And gain:
16 def
12 emnity
+5% magic dmg taken
-5% phy dmg taken
+30 mp + 48 HP

wow, such meaningful tanking stats for VT XP mobs. It Equates to about 10 dmg taken per hit received.
You might as well take out the +12 emnity modifier, as I am doing much more damage to hold hate.

I would suggest wearing a Hauby for XP, ditching Royal Knights Belt and getting a Potent.
Also, get earrings that do something more than add HP and MP
