Can anyone think of a more useless program than Play online? I dont understand why it should take me 5 mins before I can hit play and then wait another 1 min for chars to load. I'm sorry to complain, but this is just nonsense.

Why would anyone have a game run with PoL? Idiots.

Don't think is POL issue, it sound like your computer is lagging, or just lack of processing speed to run POL O.O

Do you have anything major running in the background?

I agree POL is fucking pointless. Just give me the "Create A Char" "Delete A Char" etc screen when I run the game please. However I hate the POL website more. It's the slowest loading piece of shit going.

I like the PoL viewer, lol... It only takes me like.. 1 min to load it and get into the game, not a big deal...

Also, eventually, its going to be the center point of all of SE's online games, so they started early rather than late.

Playonline did once support the online mode of Dirge of Cerberus FFVII, but dropped it. I'm wondering if they are just gonna use that for FFXI alone or other upcoming SE games, like, say, that unnamed MMO they are producing?

definitely going to be used in upcoming online games from SE

Yeah but... why? Even if a user plays several MMOs from SE, they don't need a front-end to access them all from one location. Drop a shortcut on your desktop to each MMO and be done with it.

I'd much rather have direct launch capability like any regular game, I can't begin to describe how much POL infuriated me when I first started FFXI. Got used to it. Now I'm angry at it again thanks to falseprick. Hoe.

It's a place to access all the games, yeah, and shortcuts on the desktop can be used to get to the games too...

But pol also keeps all of your CC stuff in one place, all your friends in one place, and plays some corny music. One login, too, for all the games...(Maybe it'll make more sense once there gets to be more games, lol)

That's my two cents.

^ What she said. I don't know how many people are like me, but for individual games I'd rather just have one place for my CC information because I'm a lazy ass like that.

Maybe its just me, but Im glad POL viewer is there. Its really convenient and saves a lot of hassle. I honestly dont see how it could be any inconvenience unless your computer is just really slow and cant load it very well...

I think PoL is there also to help with the multisystems that can this game is played on. It allows none PC players without the option to shortcut things to get in. Also you get tetramaster through PoL. I like popping into PoL on maintance days on Xbox live. then i can get on the game when live is off. I think Xbox live is more usless than PoL for FFXI. After all if i have net working and xbox live is down i can't play the game.

PoL is so beyond useless. I want the old days of Diablo II back. Username, password, online in 5 seconds.

But. . . but. . . CURSOR TURNS INTO CHICKEN.

I hate POL, too.

The Japanese version of POL supports several online games. That was originally the plan for the US version, but it ended up only sporting two titles. There was some interview where someone asked about dropping POL a while back, but the devs said it would be impossible because of how they made FFXI so dependent on it.

I totally agree, if I gave a fuck about Square's future games, then maybe I'd give two fucks for this annoying turd program that gets in my way.

Good point. PS2 and Mac holdin us down again.

I was about to say, 'nail meet head.'

I bet Keryan has pinpointed to a 'T' why POL is necessary. (However, any good developer knows how to make certain things invisible to the user.) Give Taj over at windower.net some time to play with windower. It should make for some interesting reading in the future at the very least.

Anyone who actually defends the existence of the completely unnecessary Playonline loader has never played a "serious" MMO besides Final Fantasy XI.

And, Ruffy ... "convenient"? You've got to explain to me how that word applies to Playonline. What is convenient about not simply being able to click on a shortcut to Final Fantasy XI on your desktop, all on it's own?

In Everquest, you double-clicked, typed in your password, and you were brought to your character selection screen. In Everquest II, World of Warcraft, Hell ... even the Korean-loved "halfway" MMOs like Ragnarok Online are smart enough to realize that adding 12 unnecessary steps, and two or three more minutes, to something as simple as a login process is not a good idea.

Anyone who chalks complaints up to "l0lz slow PC" simply doesn't have anything else to compare FFXI to. I'm sorry, but it's that simple. It may be a blanket statement, but for 9/10 of you, I'd wager it's accurate.

Once again, Square-Enix had to make itself (in many ways) the weirdest damn MMO in existence. Playonline sucks.
