Police Officer punches 17 year old girl.

how about you move along cop hater. More excuses from people that have some sort of bias against law enforcement don't fly either.

They day LEOs stop becoming a self-gratifying, self-serving group of individuals, is the day I stop hating them. As is today? Just another street gang, but this one just happens to be state funded.

It take two to have an altercation, but one of the two have to start it. She started it and in the end got punched. Had he started it he would be totally in the wrong, but he didn't. every word in your post tell that you have made up your mind without looking at the situation objectively. personally i think he exhibited a shitload more self control then some of the officers i've encountered. she took a glancing blow instead of the cop using a tazer or worse, if he was very panic prone, a gun.

I looked at the situation objectively. If I punched someone in the face at my job, regardless of reason, I'd be canned. Police are not inherently above you or me, but people like you propagate that kind of thought in to their heads. Some response was justified. Punching her in the face wasn't the right response.

Get over yourself.

Yeah, I hate the cops because I think punching a minor in the head is a reasonable way to enforce jaywalking. Totally hate those pigs. /facepalm

you seem to not understand the law and what was being enforced, when he punch the bitch, he was enforcing "resisting arrest". She would not have been punched if she had shut her fucking mouth and taken the citation that she deserved.

The minor assaulted the officer in question. At that point, he could have done any number of things. He could have tased her, used pepper spray, used more decisive physical force than a quick pop to the forehead, or pulled his fucking gun. She's also damn near as big as the officer in question, if you watch the video, and he's surrounded by an obviously unfriendly crowd. His options are limited, short of abandoning one suspect to attempt to detain another and possibly lose both, so he makes the expedient choice.

Was it possibly a flawed decision? Yes.

Does that make him a bad cop? No.

Uh, what the fuck happened to accountability? Is it because he's a cop, he's immediately immune to it? What if his flawed decision lead to the death of innocents around him? Does that make him a bad cop?

"Guys, it's totally okay, he's a cop, he's under a lot of stress." doesn't fly with me. And it shouldn't with you. If you can't keep your cool, you shouldn't be in that career.

And the usual routine comes out.

The punch is on his list of acceptable responses.

Period.

You don't like it?

Don't assault police officers.

Yes, they are accountable, but frankly, they're afforded more leeway in the execution of their duties than your average accountant. Part of that leeway is the use of physical force to compel compliance or defend the safety of himself or others.

It's not a situation of a cop walking up and spontaneously punching a tiny little kid in the face. It's a cop getting assaulted by a woman in his weight class while attempting to perform his duties.

Its not. The fact that she was pushing him and keeping him from detaining her friend who was also acting like an idiot made it reasonable. You act as if he was like, HEY YOU! STOP JAYWALKING *PUNCH*. Not to mention the girl was just as big as he was, if not bigger (wider) and pushing him and being up in his face. Its not like he ID'd her and was like 'oh shit, you're only 17 I better treat you like a minor'. If you're gonna get PHYSICAL with a police officer when hes doing his job, you better be ready to deal with the consequences of your actions.

I hope you're not on the receiving end of a punch to the face, or worse, for not pulling over in such a time unknown to you that's deemed "too long," thus resisting arrest by the group of people you're defending here. It is, after all, up to their discretion.

After all, it's an acceptable response.

Quite frankly Skaw, if I walked up and assaulted a police officer, I'd be damn surprised to get off with as fucking little as a punch to the face. To be honest, I'd expect to get tased, pepper sprayed, and possibly have a gun pulled on me. Then again, I'm 6'3" and about 250 lbs, so people tend to take physical threats from me rather seriously.

It's fucking irrelevant, however, because I don't assault police officers for no fucking reason.

I'm glad your experiences with police have all been positive and that you've never had reason to believe a cop was in a pissy mood or just looking for a fight or eager to flex his authoritarian muscles because someone didn't take his badge as seriously as he thought he was due.
when i was 15 years old a pair of cops stopped me while i was riding my bike through a white neighborhood that had these cool pathways i enjoyed taking. The two officers detained me by asking me my name and where i lived. I answered their questions, they ran my name, came up with ZERO criminal record (as i knew they would cause i didn't do stupid shit like 90% of the kids in my neighborhood seemed incapable of), they apologized and went about their patrol.

Another time during my teenage years i was out cutting the grass in my front lawn and a squad car pulled up out of nowhere. Three officers got out of the car and proceeded to arrest me. I was caught off guard and they had me on the ground before i knew it, and nearly had me cuffed before my father came outside furious. Turns out the officers mistook me for my brother, who has a criminal record a mile long, and were acting on a LEGAL arrest warrant. I remained calm throughout the entire ordeal and a national incident did not take place.

I received no injuries or any other form mistreatment from the first altercation because i used SELF CONTROL, plus i was armed with the knowledge that i had nothing to fear. In the second incident my family didn't cause a stink because we realize that police officers are human beings, and human beings make mistakes. That and the fact that my brother and i resemble each other so much that i get mistaken for him by his own friends at times.

He's a professional. He should've maintained being a professional. He didn't. A savage response when your (intended) job is to maintain civil order should be met with repercussions.

Holy fuck. After having your civil rights violated and personally humiliated you're still able to defend this group of people?

Not only did that crack me up, but you beat me to it.

You guys are saying that it was unjust for him to punch a minor, a girl, a whoever, for jaywalking. That was not the case. He was dealing with one girl when this other bitch decided it'd be okay to ignore her friend and break loose of him to put her hands on a law enforcer. Trying to start a fight with someone who is just doing their job deserves a punch in the fucking head. That's like starting a fight with grocery store bagger because they weren't putting things in the bag the way you wanted it, but they were just doing their job.

And I never stated otherwise. All I said was punching her in the face wasn't, and shouldn't be considered, a valid response to being shoved.

How is it a savage response? It's a measured strike.

Would it be better if he'd tased her? Used pepper spray? Did nothing and allowed the situation to escalate until something really bad happened?

Who the fuck are you to judge? Have you been trained in the field, or are you just armchair quarterbacking the issue?

Holy fuck. After having your civil rights violated and personally humiliated you're still able to defend this group of people?

By all means, point out the civil rights violation there.

I fucking dare you.

Of all the things for this to be over...Jaywalking? Really?

There's blame enough to go around for this one. The girl's were pretty stupid doing what they did. On the other hand, I'd expect a Police Officer to have faster and more efficient ways of subduing someone. Socking someone in the face is within his rights, but I was under the impression these guys were supposed to have training that gave them a lot more options than just slugging someone.

As for the cop-lover/cop-hater thing you guys have been bandying about, it's pretty clear from where I stand. There are folks on the force who haven't any right to wear a badge because they're in it for the power trip. Then there are the folks who are worth a damn and do their job. That was really driven home for me the night I camped out for the Wii back when it first came out. Two cops, two completely different attitudes to a bunch of folks huddled around a GameStop in sleeping bags at 3 in the morning. One of them needed to fuck right off, while the other was like "Oh, ok cool. Carry on then." Night and Day I tell yah. It boils down to people, but the effects are amplified to make the bad apples even worse because of the authority they wield.

It would've been better if he maintained control of the situation and not tried to detain more people than he has brain cells, but if you insist:

Forcing her in to compliance doesn't mean punching her in the face. There are plenty of methods with dealing with belligerent individuals by force that don't involve battery. Methods he's trained and expected to use.

I dunno bro, the fourth amendment sound familiar? The warrant was in his brothers name, not his.

Did you watch the video? He struggled with them for quite some time, trying to detain the first girl who was making quite a fuss, and having both of them flailing around and pushing him. Again, you're making it out to be some horrible thing, when in reality it really wasn't. He could have peppered her, he could have tazed her or worse pulled a gun on her. What would you have done in a similar situation when trying to talk to them didnt work, trying to calmly keep them from flailing around didn't work, and then getting shoved.

The point you and hali seem to be missing is, SHE ASSAULTED A POLICE OFFICER. We didn't see the build up to this, when he was trying to signal them to come over, what the two girls were saying in the build up to the punch. You don't get physical with a police officer, especially if he isn't even trying to detain you. When you get physical, you need to willing to deal with the consequences of your actions.

And the consequences should be doled out by a judge and jury, not a police officers fist.

But hey, due process, what's the deal with that?

Tell me how he could have maintained control of the situation. Enumerate for me a number of methods that do not involve force that would have dealt with the situation as efficiently.

I mean, you're an expert and all obviously.

I dunno bro, the fourth amendment sound familiar?

I dunno bro, the ACLU would laugh you right the fuck out of their office if you came to them with that complaint.

Police officers, serving a lawful warrant, encountering someone who fits the description of their suspect at the place that they expect to find him, then arresting said suspect?

Good luck proving a rights violation there.

Seriously bro.

Good luck.

I don't know about you, but it didn't look like those girls were wanting anything to do with that police officer. You'd have to arrest them first to get them in front of a judge and jury, and they were PHYSICALLY RESISTING HIM.

I already told you. He shouldn't have tried to work beyond his means in the first place. He had a group larger than he could deal with.

I really doubt it.

Police officers, serving a lawful warrant, encountering someone who fits the description of their suspect at the place that they expect to find him, then arresting said suspect?

The police didn't have their facts straight, and acted on it..

Good luck proving a rights violation there.

Seriously bro.

Good luck.

..so I don't know how you couldn't see a rights violation. But whatever, I'm not you.
