Police Officer punches 17 year old girl.

I already told you. He shouldn't have tried to work beyond his means in the first place. He had a group larger than he could deal with.

Brilliant! Cops should just large groups of law breakers do whatever they want!

Obviously, this is the solution to all our social woes. Just commit crimes en masse, and police will not be able to do their jobs for fear of provoking the indignation of hippies everywhere!

The police didn't have their facts straight, and acted on it..
They were within reasonable levels of certainty to do what they did.

You can disagree, but you're wrong.

Or, you know, he could've done the rational thing and ask for another cop or two to help him out.

"My opinion formed from my personal interpretation of the constitution is right, and since you disagree with me yours is wrong.

As I said to Zaltanna. Get over yourself.

skaw should take his own advice

fucking hippies.

Elaborate? I never said he was wrong, just that I couldn't understand how he doesn't see a violation in what happened to Zaltanna(And that cops[or anyone else] shouldn't be able to get away with punching people in the face when trying to be a professional.)

Or, you know, he could've done the rational thing and ask for another cop or two to help him out.

Yes, because jaywalking is usually a crime that requires backup.

Hell, most of the time cops won't even issue a citation for it. They'll just give you a verbal warning, and hopefully put the fear of whatever into you.

As I said to Zaltanna. Get over yourself.

Your hypocrisy is, as always, refreshing.

Or irritating.

One of those.

Much like your constant editing of your own posts.

Reasonable level of certainty. He fit the description, he was in the right location, they had a warrant. It all lines up. Had they jumped him for no reason whatsoever in the middle of the street, you'd be right. But no. They were coming to his house to serve a warrant, and I believe we can safely assume a strong resemblance. They're fully in the right to be on him like white on rice, right up until they ascertain his actual identity.

Which, by all accounts, is what happened.

Forcing her in to compliance doesn't mean punching her in the face. There are plenty of methods with dealing with belligerent individuals by force that don't involve battery. Methods he's trained and expected to use.

Care to elaborate on those methods?

I certainly hope that had this group of people ripped the cop limb from limb, you'd be saying "Dumb cop should've called for backup."

So what you're saying is.. profiling?

Care to elaborate on those methods?

The multitude of takedowns or other neutralizing manuevers they're instructed in that don't begin with, end with, or contain "Punch suspect in the face?"

Because two girls is the same thing as a violent crowd.

The multitude of takedowns they're instructed in that don't begin, end, or contain "Punch suspect in the face?"

So preforming a takedown, throwing a girl to the pavement and subduing her with your body weight is so much better than a quick jab to the face?

Actually I believe I'd be saying "fucking mob should be taken down by SWAT team with maximum prejudice". I'll never castigate a police officer for doing his or her job.

The multitude of takedowns they're instructed in that don't begin, end, or contain "Punch suspect in the face?"

So you're admitting your ignorance then?

Because two girls is the same thing as a violent crowd.

Read the article, the group of people he was detaining was 5 individuals in total.

If performed correctly, yes. You're telling me it isn't? I mean, it may take more time, but hey, thems the breaks.

So you're admitting your ignorance then?

What? Are you seriously doing this? Do I honestly have to list off the techniques that don't involve punching faces? Really?

Or are you just grasping at straws in some vain attempt to go against me?

I guess that means I'm finished here, if you guys can't be reasoned with. Have a happy acceptable cop punching you in the face time, folks.

Yes. Detaining 5 people for jaywalking, which is a cite-and-release situation 99% of the time.
If performed correctly, yes. You're telling me it isn't? I mean, it may take more time, but hey, thems the breaks.
During which time the officer's complete attention is on a single individual, who may suffer serious injuries as the result of the takedown in question.

What? Are you seriously doing this?

If you believe he had a vastly superior alternative, present it.

I'm not requiring you to enumerate every single potential method he could have subdued the suspect. Just find one that you think is so much better than a quick pop to the head that caused no injury. So far you've just been saying "Well, there are so many better options that the cop could have used" without once saying what those options were.

So here's your chance.

Dazzle us.

I'll take a jab to the face over being thrown onto the pavement anyday. And I'd like to know exactly what techniques are more appropriate than a slight jab.

Read the article, the group of people he was detaining was 5 individuals in total.

But how many were physically resisting him? Oh yeah just the two stupid girls. Obviously he wasn't acting out of hand since the other 3 didn't seem to have any issues with him.

If performed correctly, yes. You're telling me it isn't? I mean, it may take more time, but hey, thems the breaks.

Now see I just don't really see that. Especially when the person you're attempting to take down is FIGHTING BACK. He could have taken her down, she could have put her arm out, and the weight of him falling on top of her could have caused her to break her arm. Instead, he dazed her with a slight jab and no medical attention was needed.

First off the cop was not nitpicking by stopping people for jaywalking. The school requested a officer be there to make kids use the sky bridge so he was doing what the school asked by stopping students.

A example like this I had. In my old neighborhood we didn't have good BB courts, so we used to play BB on the local courts in other cities but we couldn't get the Rec ID because we didn't live in the city. Every once in a while a cop who was a stickler would come kick us off the court. Now it's twenty on one at least, should he call back up to remove people from a basketball court, should he expect violence to ensue? If one of the girls that was spectating goes at him and he punches her, is he in the wrong? Never once did I see any violence in one of these situations, we actually were raised better than to go after police officers.

If I saw my daughter on tape going at a police officer, now way I would look at her as the victim, because if she says "yes sir, i won't do it again." the situation ends there, and she's been raised better than to go after a cop, this girl obviously wasn't. Would I question whether the punch was necessary, or course. Would I absolve my daughter of responsibility and blame the police, hell no.

All these excuses for this girl are ridiculous. There are good cops and bad cops. If you're harassed when doing nothing, you're a victim. If you go at a police officer who is not even talking to you at the time, you cannot be a victim.

Sorry for the long post.

#1 - this bitch seriously had it coming. I watched the video on the news last night and I quite literally expected her to start yelling "OOOOH IM PRESSIN CHARJES" after she took her smack to the face. Excessive force would have been the officer shooting her in the head, not punching her.

#2 - I won't agree with Zalt very often, but I have to in this instance. Policemen are enforcers of local law, despite any connotations of being swine these days. If one tells you to stop doing something, you either fucking well stop doing what you're doing, or you go ask for his name and badge number. You do *not* go fucking slap a cop, I don't give a shit who you are.

#3 - Skaw has some bender against the cops for some reason. Given that he's in Baltimore and that everything I know of Baltimore I learned from The Wire, I can safely say that Baltimore is worse off than Detroit in terms of crime and corrupt police departments. Skaw should feel vindicated now!

#4 - @ The 4th amendment argument about Zalt's wrongful arrest. First, that sucks Zalt on both counts, but I'm glad you made it through it okay. Second, wrongful arrests probably happen more commonly than are reported.

As i explained before. the arrest warrant was for my brother. he still lived at home at the time, as did i. he is tall and slender, so am i. he has short black hair, as do i. my brother has very light skin for an african american, and so do i. We have similar, but not matching, facial features. for example: my chin is longer and his ears are bigger, boy i loved tacking the hell out of him for that. :)

as those without a foolish bias can see the officers had good reason, probable cause you might say, to think i was my brother at the time. My father, who was rightfully upset, stormed outside and quickly established that i wasn't my brother and the arrest ended there. My civil rights were not violated in any way, shape, or form. Had the arresting officers ignored my father and loaded me into the back of the police car, THEN my civil rights would have been violated. you may live in a city with piss poor cops, well guess what, i grew up in one too, but i don't let the piss poor actions of a few spoil my opinion of the whole group.

police officers have a duty and are given the authority to carry out that duty. if the girl was acting like the ghetto rat tramps i grew up with then she deserved the punch. its like the time honored saying, "Dont start nothin, wont be nothin."

And now i offer you all further bits of wisdom when dealing with law enforcement officers.

this thread has been very entertaining.

sitting here picturing skaw in your situation zalt, you had the common sense to comply with the officers and THEN figure out whats going on afterward. I can picture skaw pulling away from the cops and running around his yard flailing his arms screaming "my rights my rights my rights!" up until he gets tazed/pepper-sprayed/punched, and then ACTUALLY arrested for resisting arrest (yeah you can still be charged with resisting arrest even if the initial arrest in question was a mistake.)

these are my favorite type of punks to watch on Cops/world wildest police videos/etc. they are usually college aged, very "enlightened" and they ALWAYS know their rights, yet typically end up pepper sprayed/tazed and hog tied in the back of the patrol car anyways.

@Zalt: You do have a fucking long chin. <3 etc.

@Thelona: Don't taze me bro. Don't taze me bro.

Law Enforcement Officers are told repeatedly never to strike someone with a closed fist. If you have to, you use open palm. But guess what? Had he smacked her from downtown, we would still be here on this forum bickering about Law Enforcement and their methods.

I feel that Skaw is just a massive cop hater and is using the closed fist as a means of bashing cops in general. Had it been open palm, it would still be oxygen feeding the flames for him to just go on a cop bashing spree.

Skaw, take your own advice and get over yourself. Law Enforcement is pretty easy to criticize when you're just a forum hound looking to sound smart. You should do a few ride along's with LEO's to get more perspective than just your own very inaccurate loathing view. Before you judge every cop in existence, why don't you walk in their shoes? I'm pretty sure this will just be retorted with some quip thats semi well written and discrediting against law enforcement, however, you'll never get far with that attitude.~
