Again, from the cop's perspective, you're going into a situation where you're planning to arrest a man who may well have access to a variety of firearms and has been charged with assault prior to this warrant. You go to the house, he doesn't answer, you break down the door to search the building, a dog comes at you, a man holding an oblong black object comes out... You've got a split second to make your decision. From the standpoint of personal safety, the proper decision is to shoot. If you take the time to identify the object, you may well get shot yourself. If you attempt to subdue the suspect, you may well get shot yourself. You may say that it's the job of police officers to take that risk, and I say you're insane. If I'm serving a warrant on you, and I think you might be dangerous... well hell, my life is vastly more important to me than yours is. As I said, I'd have taken the shot and not lost an ounce of sleep over it. As the cops said, “If this boy would’ve come to the door, opened the door, we probably wouldn’t be talking,”.
And Chris, I understand you're upset about what happened, but as far as I can tell from what you've said so far, you weren't there. So you really have no idea what actually happened. For all you know, your buddy was running out into the foyer screaming "Allah Akbar" and holding a detonator. People lie. You accuse the cops of lying to make themselves look good, I can just as easily level that accusation against your buddy's roomies. They were, after all, the ones enjoying the fruits of felony in all likelihood.
