I was pondering the thought of buying a PS3 in preparation for FFXIV coming out in March since my PC can't handle the game and it is the cheaper route for me to take. The due date itself has made me consider picking up FFXI again until FFXIV came out, and I was wondering if there was a certain type of PS3 harddrive I need to get FFXI's PS2 discs to install correctly on my PS3 if I decide to buy. I have read up on random blogs and stuff online that certain hard drives don't work, but the articles are a little outdated and can't find anything else about it.

Any help is great =)

Step one would be to buy an original 20gb, 60gb, or 80gb unit. None of the others have PS2 backwards compatibility.

They have it, just they are far more limited in what games will work. My single ps2 game won't work, but their is a software in the PlayStation store to download that if the game is computable it will copy the disc to your hard drive and load off of that on the new slim's. I do agree with you though about looking for a gen1 ps3 if your going to try and play ffxi on it. Definitely look more into if it will work though, and for verified experiments of it working.

Isn't there a special download in the Playstation Store just so people can play FFXI on any PS3?

There is. It's basically so the game will be able to recognize the hard drive as the PS2 HDD.

Bonus points!: If you have an old 2K5 and I think 2K6 game, those can install on the hard drive for FASTER LOAD TIMES!!!!
:O :O :O :O :O

Sorry..I'm stealing this thread for a second lol...

I was actually thinking of buying a ps3, the 60gig one actually. Well apparently there is this yellow dot of death thing that means your ps3 doesnt work..and when I looked it up..people have said it's happened with their 60 gig ps3's.

I'm curious if the yellow dot of death thing only effects the original ps3s..or can it happen to all of them (old fat ones and new slims) equally? Thanks

As far as I know, they don't even make 60 GB ps3's anymore- for something like 2 years now- so I'm not sure what the yellow dot of death is all about. I own an original 60 GB ps3 and have never had any issues with it.

YOu can buy them off of amazon, used obviously. Which I was thinking about because I have some ps2 games I really want to play..and we don't have a ps2 anymore

oh and its the yellow light of death..basically this light turns yellow and your ps3 doesn't work lol

Ahh, well the 60gb backwards compatibility is def worth it. I'm replaying Legend of Dragoon on it right now- pretty sweet.

I can tell you that I have never had a problem with mine and I've had it for a couple years now if that helps your decision. /shrug

There was a "Yellow Dot of Death" complaint a while back, but when people actually ran the numbers, it was some ridiculously low percentage of units that suffered from it, and it covered a variety of similar issues.

Like, less than one percent of units.

Like, someone may well have gotten paid money to write the article complaining about it.

Meh, I think I might just do easypay with QVC and get one of the non-backward compatible ones and stick with PS3 games until FFXIV comes out..it's a hassle and I would rather must do payments on a PS3 anyway

Sometimes you can catch no-interest 18 months at Best Buy and the like on purchase over x amount, which would usually qualify if you got a ps3, extra controller, overpriced hdmi, game, etc.

QVC does that too..just found a a 120GB PS3 Slim that includes a Blu-Ray Disc of Hitch, LittleBigPlanet,Wireless dual shock controller and an HDMI cable for $439+ shipping. I'm on the fence about it, but the fact I can only pay 120ish a month until it is paid off makes it look more inviting. What do you guys think? Here's the link to the page http://www.qvc.com/qic/qvcapp.aspx/view.2/app.detail/params.item.E165666.desc.Sony-PS3-120GB-w-Hitch-BlurayLittleBigPlanetGameHDMI-Cable

Edit: No, I'm not getting it for Hitch. Thought I'd clarify that before the metrosexual jokes kick in

Really? Because Hitch was a... uh... an... a movie.

We're talkin' about a PS3 here, not a car or a house. If you can't afford it on the spot you don't need to buy it...

Furthermore, you can get that system with out all of the bullshit for $280-299.

They all come with a Dual Shock wireless controller
You can get a perfect HDMI cable for $5 (new)
Hitch Blu-ray for $12.99 (new)
LBP for $25 (new)

You can also take off shipping.

Alright Strid wanna not be a dick? Next time just make a positive suggestion rather than a negative one.

I couldn't afford mine "on the spot." I actually saved up for mine.

Uh, then you could afford it on the spot... AFTER you saved up for it. That was the proper thing to do.

Or what, exactly?

That aside, I did make a positive suggestion. Two actually; don't spend money you don't have on things you don't need and a cheaper way to buy it.

If my memory servers me right, and I'm not going to look into it right now. But I heard FFXIV is suppose to come out on PS3 6 months after it's release on PC.

Not saying its true but it might be. So to anyone getting a PS3 for that game might want to look before they leap.
