QCDN's future without a Flameboard

No, they don't call what the poster did flaming. They call it trolling. The poster wasn't trying to clear up a confusion. They were trying to say, as lightly as they could without anyone saying hey knock it off, "Peregrine is a liar." For what reason, here? Why here? Because it's me.

You are doing exactly what you say you are opposing at the moment. You are overreacting to a harmless question, you said "I do not recruit from this site anymore." All they did was wonder how you could say that when you did try and recruit 6 days ago.

You are so used to everything you post in being changed to a flame on you that you can't even handle a simple question <not trying to dis or flame or "troll"> without overreacting, thus not being able to control yourself. Which is what you said the main evil of the flame board was.

You said the FB brings out the worst of people and because once someone is flamed they overreact and can't control themselves in a mannerly order. If you are going to stay something to that effect then stand behind what you say, be an example of the first of the new breed to actually use a calm approach to another's opinion, question, or idea. I.E. you could have just said at the beginning when they mentioned that that you only responded because that was the OP's first post on the site. There was no need for you to get mad or worked up about it.

I personally believe what Blowy was doing is trying to understand why he/she should believe your side of the argument if what you say contradicts itself. It's like a preacher speaking out against homosexuality then going home that night and having a gay affair with another man which is against two philosophies of the Christian religion. In other words Blowy was trying to see if there was something up with the last recruitment you did or if you were just another hypocrite.

It was nothing to get mad about at all. It's things like this that have happened because of the FB. Because of the FB you are used to being trolled that anything said to you goes to your brain as "He/she must be trolling these threads looking for anything I have ever done wrong." When in fact any person considering a legitimate arguement would have done the same thing. It's like in a political race where a runner for said office gives a great speech with great ideas, then finding out he voted against those last ideas in the last
poll.

To actually make a legitimate arguement which you seem to love to have one must know all of the background information of the arguement, and to know truly where you stand on the arguement, which is precisly what Blowy was trying to do.

The second you do that is the second the flameboard ceases to exist. All other forums ban flaming. That's what a flame is. Personal. Any other arguments would could and SHOULD go elsewhere, because it would no longer be a flame. Flames are personal. QCDN has a skewed slant on what flame means, and the misinterpretation gets bowled right over on the functional board. It is ALL about personal on the flameboard.

That's kind of my point and purpose, Peregrine. Change what a flame is and you change the FB. It doesn't necessarilly die (it might), but it becomes something different. It would still have a different character than the other boards, it would still serve *a* purpose, but it would be very different from what it is now.

If Sculli changes the definition of flame to knock down every personal comment made (or puts teeth on it, since it is ALREADY mandated that you are to not get personal), the moderators will either ignore the lipservice change because they want all problems reported to them in PM as it stands now, or there will be a great and terrible wave of banning. I see no purpose in a board specifically geared toward antagonism. Any time you want to make it more severe than a debate, it enters into antagonism. QCDN doesn't need it. Ever. Debates can boost the general discussion board so long as moderators keep it tight. There's your most obvious solution right there to boosting the other boards while eliminating what annoys people about QCDN.

So then attacks only belong on people's signatures?
Attacks don't belong on QCDN. I really don't see why people think hypocrisy is such a bad thing. I am as prone to put a mask on and make a mockery out of something I don't like as I am to calmly speak out against it at face-value. Anyone who has watched me post can notice the ridiculous splits in personality.

Attacks don't belong in people's signatures. And yet I'm not going to lie and say ohhh nooo that's no attack down there.

I don't care if someone thinks attacking is alright or if someone doesn't think attacking is alright. People are what they are. Your garbage dump of a personality is your business not mine. I just don't like it when people profess one set of views and then act as if they didn't believe them. You want to buy gil? Fine, buy gil. Then don't rant about gilsellers! Ext, ext.

Morals are morals. Morals are not tools to use to bring advantage to your side and then shed as the need arises. It doesn't mean, "believe what I believe." It means, "say what you believe."

You could also put more mods on the flameboard. Someone that frequents QCDN everyday and has shown to be a good member of the community. Someone who can remain objective no matter what the flame topic is about.
Nominations for Aly!

Alyada would be good unless the topic involved sex o.0

Valoran, I like your post.

I think that it's pretty fair at this point to assert that the flameboard does not just function as a release for in-game anger, but actually engenders it.

I have noticed this a lot. I doubt specific examples need to be made, but the whole Vandoura clothcraft suicide comes to mind. The topic started on one specific flame, delved into personal attacks between Odon, Vandoura, and a few others. After that I just stopped reading.

I kinda like the suggestions of altering the Flameboards, but it will require an ingenious wording of rules to get precisely what is required. Namely being, imo, flames about occurences in games that especially aggrieve you.

Where is there any proof that the removal of the flameboard will do anything to improve the activity of the other boards?
I would consider the objective of the removal of the FB to be to get rid of widespread and often baseless rampant negativity. The activity of other areas may improve, or it may not, but at least other areas won't be tainted by what's swapping over from the FB.

Bajaratt said:
The flameboard has legitmate uses, reporting bad/dishonerable players is important in that people try not to let those players continue with their behavior.
Reporting bad and dishonorable players should by default not be a flame, but a factual account of events, which then in turn ought to be equally factually argued. If people are not able to do so, then quite franky, I don't want them on this board anymore. Shitstorms and pitchfork wielding mobs never lead to conflict resolution. Reasonable arguments made in a civil manner on the other hand often do generate desirable results.

Peregrine said:
Don't try to tell me it's the job of the users to behave as they should. That would make you [the mod] pointless.
It is the responsibility of a human being to behave decently toward another human being. If one unable to do so, then there will be no place for one at QCDN.

re: more FB mods
The issue is that at some point too much moderation counteracts the purpose of the FB. In addition mods have to be able to completely disassociate themselves from the posters post and only look at it given the frame of reference of the FB rules. So far that has worked out alright, but the more mods are added, the more likely it will be that one of them will take mod action based on personal opinion rather than established rules. At that point the benefit of additional mods turns into a burden as now not only user posts need to be evaluated, but mod actions as well.

And there it is. Total lack of control outside the flameboard. Traditionally I would take that breach of form as the signal to outright derail a thread on purpose to make a mockery out of the concept of "human decency" or the lack thereof on the forums due to the types who use the flameboards. They show no restraint, so I see no reason in taking any sort of high road. Do you see why this behavior from me is so addictingly entertaining? The lack of ABILITY to follow admin's instructions to not flame outside the flameboard is fascinating. The flameboard so grips the regular posters of this forum that they CAN NOT put it down to go elsewhere, so they carry the flameboard out with them. They can't help it. No one is correcting them, and it feels good to break the rules a little. Flaming on the non-flame boards makes you feel like you're at an advantage--to slip something in that others can't do. This is the part where I would say something stupid like, "You'd know all about breaking the rules to gain advantage, now wouldn't you firestreak?" And the thread would go to hell from there mighty quick.

Will admin warn firestreak for this? No. Will a mod do anything? No. Do I expect anything different? No, because this is always how it has been, and it will always be this way until someone cares enough to stop talking and start doing something about ending it. People carry the flameboard out with them. They can not put it down. Just remove it, and they won't carry the burden with them for long *so long as* the moderators are fully enforcing.

Does this sort of imply that those who frequent QCDN automatically have a touch of bad rep in game?

I realize there is mucho drama here on the Flameboard, but I always thought that the Flameboard, while a big part of QCDN, isn't the only thing QCDN is known for in game.

Is this not the case?
If not, what needs to be done to change this? The purpose of QCDN, as I see it, is not to be a drama pit. If that is how the majority of players perceives it, then something will need to be done about it.

Sculli it's your site, what is your audience?

I find that removing the flameboard isn't going to magically make more people post here, they will find something else to blame. The NA on the server before this board wouldn't work together really, I find it hard to believe that things would change if you removed it.

Besides if you are trying to get more people here, is it worth it? Look at alla and BG, both sites are pretty terrible and not worth visiting with the influx of visitors.

If we are all for "improving the quality," then charge for membership and watch the quality skyrocket. I belong to 3-5 pay sites and they are probably the sites worth visiting most of the day.

An insult isn't a flame, per se. If someone posts something ridiculously moronic, it'd be asinine to slap the following posters on the wrist for calling them stupid.

I highly suggest you look in to what flames are before tossing the word around. Ofcourse, I've urged you to look in to many things before. But like a fool, you never took that advice.

An insult isn't a flame per se?
That's a pretty standard synonym. You are confusing a flame for an argument or debate.

The problem is you're not so smart nor clever or original as you think you are. You act a certain way because it entertains you to make people insult you. Your mentality isn't much different than a common board troll. I don't chose to play your stupid mind games. Obviously you just thrive on the attention, but unfortunately there's not much I can do. Since you're not as obvious about your intentions as someone like Seppeku for example I can't convince people to just ignore you in hopes you'll go away(not that I could for him).

And here goes the rollercoaster to topic degradation. Does anyone know what 'taking it in stride' or 'no skin off my back' means?

Overlook the petty word games and please stay focused on Sculli's topic here. Only a few of us have ADD, and we'd like to be the only ones straying from the topic at hand.

Ironic that the very topic discussing the future of QCDN's flameboard should play host to a few posts of bickering about someone.

Punish the problem people and the FB will be used properly. If you don't have the time to do that, you shouldnt have the time to worry about it either.

I dont see why a whole section of the board should be removed because of the actions of a few. And if the majority are the problem, then perhaps that is the service the majority desires.

Also you steer the conversation naturally in such a direction that there is no way but to go off topic to continue any argument with you, which is unfortunate. Even if your arguments stay on topic, you through manipulation attempt to make yourself the topic, so you can stand on your soap box and preach about how great you see yourself. It's quite vexing cause I honestly doubt anyone on this forum does or has ever given a shit about your GPA.

I don't thrive on attention. I thrive on weak willpower. It entertains me to an embarassing degree. I'm not much different from a board troll? Fire, you are an out of bounds flamer. The difficult thing about trolling is that the flamer defines it. I really don't see why you feel the need to post that my personality is a garbage dump here, unless of course you con't care one whit what admin wants on their forum, which is for people to not flame outside the flameboards.

You call it "not playing my game." I kinda see Sculli saying stop flaming outside the flameboard a hundred times in a row. That sounds more like ignoring your superiors to me. I really am not doing much if anything to provoke you here. You remember the flameboard. The flameboard is the problem.

Theres a world of difference between saying something to someone to demean them, such as Firestreaks remark towards your glaring hypocrisy in your opinions of where personal attacks belong or not, and saying something to intice anger. Flames are Insults. Insults aren't necessarily flames.

Calling someone stupid when they write ridiculous dribble(much like your opinion on where attacks belong and don't) isn't a flame. That is your personality, you stick by it and you even commend yourself by doing so. You said that is how you operate. And it is indeed garbage.

The problem with the flameboard, is most people honestly believe bickerings and insults are full on flames.
